I'm in the northeastern U.S., where we get snow, ice...all that! Most of these tips apply. Of course if your winter is particularly harsh, you'll have to consult with the staff at your LBS but GCN's tips here are a great start.
Very informative. Living in the Midwestern United States, our winters can be quite brutal. Today it the high temperature is -2 F outside, which adds a whole level of new challenges when venturing out. What you fellas are demonstrating is good down to around 30F roughly. The diving gloves are a great idea, I've never considered that! I commute to work most days, as long as the trails have been cleared of snow. This winter we have close to two feet of snow sitting on the ground, and the frost is 3 feet into the ground.....in March. Last year at this time I was out riding in shirt sleeves! Thanks for the informative video!
Or take up mtb during the winter months, it's a great buzz hitting the single tracks within a woods during the winter nights as well . Much fun to be had. That's how I get my winter miles in. 😀😀😀
Louis garneau plastron base-layer is worth buying.. also America has a product called "hot hands" it is an air activated packet that produced heat for 6-8 hours. I use a lanyard with an I.D. style clip to keep packet close to the chest. And lastly, the motorcycle clothing has a fleece neck warmer with fleece extending to mid chest area. I hope this suggestion helps.
He had borrowed mine (James') which had all the money spent on rather nice Mavic Cosmic Carbone wheels! It's actually a nice bike though, full carbon frame and Ultegra throughout.
I ride down to approx -25C. Most important thing that I can't be without is good gloves. Clothes is pretty same as your recomendations. Windproof top layer is recomended.
We don't have that issue in Puerto Rico the coldest weather on winter is around 60℉ so it's practically summer all year. The joy of living in the tropic. :-) Happy cycling.
My two best purchases for riding below zero: 1) Mavic Propane jacket - ridiculously warm, I usually ride with just a long sleeve base layer underneath it. Also has a face mask attached to it. 2) Winter cycling boots boots, half a size up from usual. Allows you to wear thicker socks without limiting circulation.
Great videos cant get enough of them...my rule in Ontario Canada for cold riding is "when the clothes weigh more than the bike its time to ride the indoor trainer" :-)
1] inner layer thin and tight lycra 2] insulating layer of fleece or something thick 3] outer shell totally plastic/windproof but looser fitting with full zipper. Yeah it catches more wind but way more comfortable. I commute all winter in Wisconsin - well below freezing and always snow, but it works with the right equipment.
I have worn kit similar to that in the video down to about -10C in the UK although I have never found overshoes adequate (any brand, any layer combination, any sock combination) and my winter riding was transformed by some Northwave boots.
1) don't save on spikes: at least 200 spikes front&back; go for premium brands for mental confidence 2) follow the weather history over several days, especially if it is hovering around freezing & adjust your route and style accordingly 3) lower PSIs in tyres and suspensions to reduce understeering in soft snow 4) test breaks and gears early in the ride before you need them 5) fast sprint in the beginning to warm big leg muscles, which then provide heat for the rest of body = less clothes needed
I have a Gabba top, which is great to keep moderate wind and rain out. I alter what kind of layers I have below it based on the temperature. One drawback is that it starts to smell really badly, and they are a pain to wash correctly it seems
Good review I rode in the rain today I put a summer bootie on first then put a gore windstopper bootie over it and it was 33f outside my toes stayed dry the tops of my socks got a little wet put not my toes and I wore lobster gloves
Great video guys, need to get me a good baselayer, any short sleeve ones you would recommend that are fairly good value? Ive seen them get obscenely expensive.
One time i went cycling in the winter as long as it was above 0. I just wore a jacket and cyclied to the top of the mountain, although i had to walk the last part because of too much snow. But i almost froze on my way down as I didn't have any gloves and my breaks were barely working. However, i did the same thing the next day, with some gloves. It sure is different challege to be cycling in the winter.
Tip: If it is really cold use some stretch foil or duct tape to cover air vents in your helmet. Much warmer plus it actually turns your helmet into a waterproof raincap.
i just wear a wool sweater, with a louis garneau KAMLOOPS JACKET, wool socks and lobster golves, the wool sweater is best to be worn when its 45-40 Degrees or below out
Could you explain why leg warmers aren't advised? what about arm warmers? it doesn't get super cold in australia during winter but setting off early mornings can be a bit chilly.
See the amount of layering you need to have I'm feeling very lucky to live in Bangkok. We only have to face searing hot weather for 9 months of the year and 2 months of torrential rain and then one month of fairly nice weather.... So basically, just jersey and shorts will do most of the time.
I forgot to say I wore a craft windstop base layer and a gore exnon 2.0 so that had windstop I was warm also wore bib tigntd and layerd wind stop gore pants over them I was warn and wore a bakalava face cover
Could you do a video on REAL winter cycling techniques? = over 10cm snow and well below freezing point temperatures. I have learned some tricks of the trade the hard way (broken ribs & other small fractures, bent derailleurs...), but would very much welcome experts' advices that might help me steer clear of some misshaps this season.
hi there GCN, or Tom "the Brick" Last, :) i like these videos giving tips for winter rides. however, do have in line tips for buying a new pair of cycling shoes? Thanks!
How do you keep your white clothing so clean? ( or was it first time out with it ) I can't seem to get the grime out of mine no matter how much I wash it.
I tried some neoprene gloves in about 5 degrees and wet. My hands by the end looked as if they'd been submerged in a hot bath for 3 hours and felt like it :P
I'm glad the poor old crotch gets a mention ... mine got so cold once it went totally numb. Very strange experience: felt like I had someone else's todger in me trousers! No lie ...:-)
Im from Portugal, our winter Is not the worst winter. Its a country Bert favoral to cycling, we dont have -5 or 0 degres, but i dont like to ride on winter. I really dont like. And i have spend a little fortune in winter equipment allready.
This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.
I've used ones for (whisper it) running in the past - they're usually cheaper than cycling specific ones and just as good.
I want you guys to ride in the winter here in Minnesota; these winters are arctic. Great video!

Top tips guys. Two pairs of gloves are fine for me.The first pair with soft fleeceing on the inside.

I've started showing these videos to my customers at my shop. They're perfect, keep up the amazing work!
Leg warmers mean that you get warm legs, but the bits that aren't covered by them - namely *your* bits - get cold, so you're better off with tights.
I ride down to approx -25C.

It's definitely not that cold. It is wet though. What are your top nordic winter riding tips then?

Loved the bit with the glasses; informative and hilarious.

Not too many cold rain though, but I do have very chill windy sunshine here. down to Minus 13C.
Lab glasses is a great way to get a pair of clear lenses for rainy rides. Often just $4 or less.
I have a Gabba top, which is great to keep moderate wind and rain out. I alter what kind of layers I have below it based on the temperature. One drawback is that it starts to smell really badly, and they are a pain to wash correctly it seems
Love the three glasses while you talk so professionally haha
GCN dress wanted. Where to buy?
I am keen on GCN videos very much. Great job, guys, great job!
David Leitermann register your interest here: a.pgtb.me/ZLzz87. Kit available very soon.

Maybe you could do a video of your bikes and the differences between and your preferred type of style of bike compared to simon etc?? thanks!!!
Thats how se dress in fall here in Canada XD it often reaches -30c and with very thick snow. To be able to ride se need to put on cyclocross tires
I want that GCN kit soooo baaad
Riding in Norway during winter the best tip is always to remind yourself of rule #5 :)
Diving gloves. Brilliant!
Thanks GCN, great video as always, but what about the kit. Is it out yet?
Gracias x todos los consejos...buen video good luck
Tip: If it is really cold use some stretch foil or duct tape to cover air vents in your helmet. Much warmer plus it actually turns your helmet into a waterproof raincap.
What kind of cleaning do you guys do when you get home from a rainy ride.
You forgot the very important buff, it may seem useless but it makes a huge difference
i just wear a wool sweater, with a louis garneau KAMLOOPS JACKET, wool socks and lobster golves, the wool sweater is best to be worn when its 45-40 Degrees or below out
Thanks GCN, this video helped fill my Wiggle shopping basket! :)
I want one of those pair of glasses Dan wore for the funny photoshoot
I use a ziploc bag over my normal cycling socks in the winter.. works the same as a bootie does in my riding.
I like the jackets!
Great vids guys! To bad I'm riding in the sunshine in Sydney Australia. :)
me too, but when its below freezing it's a pain, I prefer about 40-60 degrees F

Try -30 deg C plus huge wind chill & 6 + inches of snow plus hard packed snow & frozen ice & Black ice. Then it’s an adventure.
Is there any video around for winter bike setup and maintenance?
I forgot to say I wore a craft windstop base layer and a gore exnon 2.0 so that had windstop I was warm also wore bib tigntd and layerd wind stop gore pants over them I was warn and wore a bakalava face cover
Just ordered some thermal pearl Izumi gloves and a new cycling jacket.
The toe covers are a great idea but I have seen you can buy them on wiggle
Hi, what is the name of that white Santini long sleeve jersey you are wearing? That would be ideal for me.
I'm planning to ride in the winter. I live I chicago where we experience slushi snow and regular snow how bad is the splash?
Get a Casteli Gabba jersey and a pair of Nanoflex armwarmers.. You will not regret it.
Would ~$500 CAD be enough of a budget to be able to ride in -20/25 C weather (semi) comfortably? Any specific product recommendations?
Your winter must be very different from the winter we have here in the nordics.. -30 degrees celsius and 40cm of snow.

I have learned some tricks of the trade the hard way (broken ribs & other small fractures, bent derailleurs...), but would very much welcome experts' advices that might help me steer clear of some misshaps this season.
When will we get a "How To Clip In During Winter/Inclement Weather" video from matt?
It's still snowing in April. This really blows. I really do get a shortness of breath can only do half of what I'm used to in Summer.
Im new to cycling and need overshoes. What are the different types? I want them to be waterproof
"Small fortune" on bike gear... Ha! Good one...
I love cycling under the pouring rain! It's like struggling with mother nature!
hahaha loved the last bit...
What’s the name of the white-black santini jacket please?
hi there GCN, or Tom "the Brick" Last, :) i like these videos giving tips for winter rides. however, do have in line tips for buying a new pair of cycling shoes?
Thanks!
No, we don't actually as yet, but we'll look into it.
fatbike video? :)
Winter has come suddenly to my area and it has severely hampered my training. I simply cannot resist the cold ):
who would ride in the snow with a roadbike anyway? I have came across some and could only get trough at walking pace. With a mtb it's no problem.
I wear my skiing inner gloves when it's cold and raining!
How do you keep your white clothing so clean? ( or was it first time out with it ) I can't seem to get the grime out of mine no matter how much I wash it.
excelent!
I tried some neoprene gloves in about 5 degrees and wet. My hands by the end looked as if they'd been submerged in a hot bath for 3 hours and felt like it :P
Cant beat winter nights on the road.
i need about 4 different pairs of gloves to get me through the winter here. varying amounts of insulation.
doing a good job & like this
Why are you using external cabling?
Is it normal for neoprene gloves to feel tight fitting at first?
I'm glad the poor old crotch gets a mention ... mine got so cold once it went totally numb. Very strange experience: felt like I had someone else's todger in me trousers! No lie ...:-)
It might have been rather new kit...
Which shoe covers are those - both inner and outer?
Hi, i love the gcn cycling clothing you have. Do you sell them? or are they just personal clothing for gcn producers?
Hi Dyfan, keep your eyes on the channel next week :-)
Ok will do!
Someone please provide a link (USA) where I can purchase that grey Santini "under vest" shown in the video?
Thanks.
When the temperatures drop below freezing you have to add studded tires, goggles, balaclava, and toe warmers.
Yes, I have to cope with the German winters. I wear a snowboard helmet in winter, it is not that open to the wind and has earwarmers included.
What brand is the cycling tights without chamois that went over your bib shorts.
Hi.
What are the mud guards your using? and are they easy to put on and off.
Hi Matt, They're SKS Race Blades and are realy easy to fit and remove, yes.
Thanks guys! :)
When will I be able to buy GCN kit?
many companies now offer insulated cycling shoes so you're less likely to have to use shoe covers with them.
I embro, gotta love Mad Alchemy. :)
Ah Daniel, wimped out to just one pair of glasses in the end...I dare you to take to the road with all three on!
Great advice :-) :-)

How to find cycling clothes from GCN Team?
I will be buying a Balaclava this winter. Last year my ears almost froze of XD.
Awesome :D
Dress for skiing. Also you are better off switching to an mtb with spikes on the tires :)
There's hardening the f up, and there's Norway... ;-)
Song name in begining of the video PLEASE!!
So many accessories
How come Tom's bike isn't exactly up to par as the other two bloke's?
Where I can get a GCN Jersey?
