I should have clarified this in the video itself but I left “Love is an Open Door” off of this list because in my opinion it isn’t a villain song in the way that the rest of these songs are.
That being said, if I had to rank it with the rest of these songs I would put it between number 11 (Les Poissons) and number 10 (Cruella De Vil).

I know I commented a bit too early in this video but I got to add this. First off, the song from Robin Hood is not a villain song because they're mocking Prince John, then there's The Backson from Winnie the Pooh if you have not noticed say similar story from the previous movie instead of The Backson was Skull which was School misread by Owl in other words, not a villain song made up character which even showed in the end of the movie no act of villainy and unlike the Heffalumps and Woozles doesn't make it that a bit of a nightmare-ish type, from The Little Mermaid the chef I consider him as a nemesis only to Sebastian the crab, not an actual villain, last but not least King Louie from The Jungle Book honestly not a villain I get it he wants to be like a human just to have fire but he's not the main antagonist of that movie you could just added Shere Khan only a small portion of a song called "that's what friends are for" even is just one tiny piece of the song.

      Hellfire is top tier!

    • @chriscausaren
      @chriscausaren 5 месяцев назад +8

Hellfire is just too peak. I think the reason why Hellfire is so hard to beat is because other villain songs are just there for pure evil reasons. Manipulative, gaslighting, abusive, negative, murderous, prideful, selfish, and all that. They exists as a song purely to describe the villain in of itself, and to give this sort of view to us the viewers that will leave us with "oh, this character is a bad person"
But with Hellfire, we're given this understanding that there's more to Frollo and his desires than what meets the eye. I mean, of course our perspective won't change (he is very obviously an evil person, just from the opening scene alone), but we are given a complex and layered understanding of how he perceives himself. He sees himself as a righteous person, and that all those genocidal actions, murders, and sins that he committed were quote-unquote "justifiable" because it is "for God". But we also see a side in him that he feels serious doubt in an action he has never done or felt before, and that is lust. He fears the temptation, and he fears the effects that it will have on him if he follows that temptation. But we also get the narrative that he doesn't blame himself for it, but blames God for the temptation, all the while refusing to stop with his desires and continuing to doubt whether or not that temptation is worth it. And towards the end, we finally see what he chose. He was given a chance by God to change, and to recant and save his soul for salvation. But, he refused, and when he finally chose his fate, he got what he deserved; a straight descent to hell.

To be honest, this ain't a villain song, but instead, a villain soundtrack.
My favorite villain soundtrack is Sykes from Oliver and Company. Every time this villain is onscreen, the music in the background just gets eerie, and dominant like his presence. The music sounds like something from Scarface which really fits with his character.

Wow! I'm really impressed! Most people would place Be Prepared in number 1 over Hellfire. I love that you recognized what an absolute masterpiece that song is.
And by the way, The Hunchback of Notre Dame was being planned for a live action remake with Peter Capaldi in the role of Frollo. But that apparently got scrapped.
Which I'm both relieved by and a little bummed over. Because Hunchback is my favorite and Peter Capaldi as Frollo is PERFECT casting. But yeah, they would have butchered it anyway so its for the best.

There’s a villain song from the Disney Tokyo show One Man’s Dream II called "Into the Fire". You can find it in a video of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Main Street music loop. It’s really dark, intense, and fun and even incorporates Hellfire.
    My top 10:
    1. Hellfire
    2. Be Prepared
    3. Poor, Unfortunate Souls
    4. Oogie Boogie’s Song
    5. Friends on the Other Side
    6. Gaston
    7. It’s Our House Now (Mickey’s House of Villains)
    8. Shiny
    9. It’s A B-Movie Show (Brave Little Toaster)
    10. Savages (I like the intensity of the visuals and their excellent animation)
We Don’t Talk About Bruno is a character assassination song that deserves credit for how heinous it is and it’s by the supposed villain’s own family. Its not a real villain song but it obviously works so well.
This Is the Thanks I Get is… catchy. That’s all I can give it. “I’d give the clothes off Benito’s back” keeps hooking me.

I approve of "Be Prepared" being second place, "Hellfire" is so good even covers are awesome. Also the 2019 version doesnt exist, the fact that it was initially going to be scrapped and they added it after people complained, only to give us that lackluster, boring performance.
Not sure what you're going on about with "The Phony King of England" being boring. It's a fun roast of the main villain, even if not a villain song. Also I am sad you didn't include sequel songs, "My Lullaby" from The Lion King 2 slaps. I hope you consider making a sequel to this list with the sequels in mind.
Also, if you haven't, please listen to the Fall Out Boy cover of "I Want to Be Like you". Sure the album is basically celebrity covers of Disney songs, but that one really is awesome.

"We don't like what we don't understand (in fact it scares us)!" Yep -- culturally relevant, and I fear 'twill be so till the end of time.
Friends on the Other Side is "creepy, catchy, funny, charming, and threatening all at the same time" -- and as if that weren't enough, it's sung by Keith David, one of entertainment's under-acknowledged treasures, who brings his A game to everything he does, from voicing heroes (Gargoyles) to voicing villains (Princess and the Frog) to narrating a multi-part PBS documentary (Ken Burns' Jazz). David's voicework as Dr. Facilier is honestly my favorite of any Disney villain ever.

I personally would have put "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind" higher up because Ratigan's such a great villain. He's stolen not only from other rodents, but also from humans, and it becomes clear that he's a serial killer plotting high treason. It's not just "This is my song about this one thing I need to do;" he's a professional criminal who already has a long list of stuff he's already done, and he's still at it. Furthermore, you can tell he doesn't feel guilt or remorse; he's having a great time. He really loves being a criminal mastermind. All that being said, I do respect that everyone has different opinions about songs and movies, and that's not a bad thing at all; that's how we got such a nice variety.

Yodel eedle adle oo or whatever its name is was performed by 4 people (The voice of Slim, the voice of the 3 brothers and 2 yodelers one for high notes and one for the low ones). I'm pretty sure that the voice of slim does the yodeling and vocals in the first part and than the big yodeling part is done purely by the yodelers, and when it returns to the normal singing the voice actor isn't doing the yodeling anymore. Basically I'm pretty sure he tried to do the yodeling at first and than got tired and only sang the vocals.

Ratigan is my favorite Disney villain and honestly, I think it's a crime that his songs aren't ranked higher. I would've put "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind" in the top ten for several reasons:
    1) It's about Ratigan's past crimes where he pulled off successful capers such as robbing the crown jewels and killing women and children (what other villain song has that?). There's an alternate version sung by Corey Burton that goes into more detail about Ratigan and his minions throwing the women and children into the Thames River, and then being shot as they came up to the surface with Ratigan watching gleefully.
    2) The song showcases his personality: He's theatrical, a dangerous threat to even his own henchmen (as seen as he fed one of them to his cat after being called a rat), his view of Basil thwarting his schemes, and enjoys being evil (something we don't see in Disney villains without giving them a sympathetic backstory).
    3) It was sung by Vincent Price who obviously had a blast singing this.
I would rank "Goodbye So Soon" lower (around in the top twenty) because of the melody, but I love how it was part of the death trap for Basil. The song mockingly sings about how Ratigan will miss Basil but will move on. The lyrics and how it was used showcase how arrogant Ratigan is, which leads to his downfall.

There's a theory I've seen that I totally subscribe to about Hellfire that I think absolutely elevates it even further!
Towards the end, when the guard comes in to inform Frollo that Esmeralda escaped, you'll notice that he's backlit in bright white light, and his face is totally in shadow.
The theory is that this was literally God giving Frollo his one chance at redemption. Esmeralda is gone, the temptation is out of his reach--this is Frollo's last chance to let it go.
    And how does Frollo respond?
"Never mind, get out, idiot! I'll find her if I have to burn down all of Paris!"
This perfectly illustrates the truth of Frollo's situation--for all of his excuses, he alone is responsible for his inevitable damnation. When presented with the opportunity to do what's right and turn from his sin, he rejects it and chooses to pursue it. What happens to him as a result is entirely his own fault.

The Latin chanting in the background of Hellfire is the Confiteor, a Catholic prayer that is specifically an admission of guilt and plea for forgiveness. "Mea culpa" means "(through) my fault", so the song is directly cobtrasting the way a follower of the religion Frollo is supposedly so devoted to should deal with feelings of guilt with Frollo's hypocritical shifting of blame, while also showcasing how on a subconscious level Frollo probably realizes that he is the one at fault. It would almost be too on the nose, but the Latin does a good job of hiding it, I guess^^

I hope by next year for the 25th anniversary of the movie that Disney give us a fully animated sequence of the villain song, Snuff Out The Light. I think that "Mine, Mine, Mine" is kinda underrated. It's not top 10 worthy or anything, clearly, but coming from a musical theater background I can see some pretty decent strengths. It has a good sense of flow and timing, the harmonizing is pretty solid, and it's really fun if you're singing in a group.
That being said, yeah, the lyrics are generic and nothing worth writing home about. But everything else would scoot theis song up to about 13th or 14th for me.

  • @tsubasa1885
    @tsubasa1885 5 месяцев назад

Personally I still think that "Savages" is Top Tier. Like you said, the whole point of the song is to show how harmful racism is. And I think it is beautifully shown not only through lyrics but animation as well. Just take lines like "Their skin's a hellish red" - sung by the English while standing in the light of fire which makes their skin look red. And the counterpart: "The paleface is a demon" - sung by Native Americans who look pale in the moonlight. They are so different but shown as the same during every scene.
The whole song is made in such a clever way. And it really conveys how hate speech and prejudices lead to so much unnecessary violence while Pocahontas' lines are all about saving what she has learned to love. With a war going on around her, she would sacrifice her own life for an English man she has gotten to know and love. I just think it's a very powerful song.

Honestly, I feel Savages does what it sets out to do, set up the impending conflict between the colonizers and the Native Americans. And yes, the lyrics are harsh and "offensive", but thats kinda the point, thats how each group views the other. The Colonizers see the native americans as savages for not having the same advancements as them and living a more naturely life, while the native americans see the colonizers as savages for barging in and tearing the place up. A common tactic people use when starting conflicts is to dehumanise the other side, hence the "barely even human" and "I wonder if they even bleed". It also shows how both sides in the heat of the moment aren't that different, that they'll brand an entire group as savage with no exceptions and use that as a justification to go to war and slaughter them. (This is a bit harder to justify with the Native americans as they're just defending their home, though its also to show how they'll kill John even if he's not actively against them.)
People need to remember that its not the film itself saying Native americans are savages, its the characters in universe. It makes sense they'd say that in the goal of killing them. Yes its pretty simple, because its a complex problem simplified for kids to understand, but I feel the message generally succeeds. I'm curious as to how it could be made better outside of improving the film itself.
