The bat doesn’t seem to go past perpendicular with the plate, but his whole upper body definitely looks committed and his momentum carries his barrel past the plane. I say he swung.

The bat broke slightly ahead of parallel to home plate, but because he was trying to get out of the way and not just check-swinging and seemed to have no intent to hit the ball, I wouldn't have rung him up.
Its crazy the amount of leeway hitters got in the 80's on checked swings vs today. The margin for error is so small it doesnt even seem worth trying to hold up. Felt like a checked swing.

If you're saying that the determining factor of "if he swung" is it the bat went past the plate. No profar did not swing. In fact I think it's credit to his athleticism that he was able to keep the bat straight despite such an insane position. Now that being said, everything else about his body says he swung. His knuckles & wrist rotation, his hips come forward almost to the pitcher. Literally everything about his body except the Bat, swung. Tough call.
I was under the impression that if the bat went over the plate, it's a swing. The bat went over the plate. But if the question is whether he tried to hit the ball or get out of the way, it's very obvious he was trying to get out of the way. And no, he wasn't trying to hit the ball while getting out of the way.
There are other ways the pitch could have been avoided to not make a swinging motion, no? He at least started to swing enough that getting out of the way of the ball meant completing the swing.
if the barrel crosses the front of the plate it's a swing right? also if you look at this upper and lower half there's two different things go on there, he tries to check as his hips are shooting backwards but it shouldn't have affected the trajectory of the bat, it might have affected his ability to hold it though.
I don't like the way they call check swings these days. Way too much advantage to the pitchers. Plus, the ump was giving both pitchers a strike zone a mile wide. I'm surprised they scored as many runs as they did.
Musgrove has been nasty, but not nasty enough, the bats need to come alive immediately....I keep waiting for Soto to get hot Also, I guess you'd have to say that's a swing, although personally I wouldn't have rung him up. Very close, and I feel like back in the day they wouldn't have called it a swing
Tbf in that point in the game just say he didn't as an umpire and keep the game rolling because you know that earlier in the ab that he should have been walked off a miss call

It’s a shame to have these fans rooting for the same team as me. Plain and simple, he didn’t cheat, and hasn’t been cheating. Those guys are just damn braindead
It's a tough call for Profar's check swing, either swing or no swing would be controversial....
I think he swung
I’m not a padres fan or a Phillies fan
Who cares?? Please feature Evan “My Man” Phillips ONE TIME!! And I’ll shut my mouth off!!..or just shut my mouth off now??🤡😂

Pads fan who agrees. I was surprised he took such issue with it.
I would call it a swing.
My day is now 1 questionable swing better now that pitching ninja uploaded

not once did he touch them shiners tho
yesn't
what a answer
That’s just one of those calls that are so close that it could go either way, and both sides would’ve been mad if it didn’t go their way.

Just based on the thumbnail, looks like a swing to me.
That's a swing no doubt about it

With the Marlins, Stanton struck out on a pitch that hit him in the face. He was trying to get out of the way, but blue rung him up.
He swung, BUT!! It was to protect his NUTTTTSSSSSS! So not a swing🤯
I am a huge Phillies fan but I would’ve been pissed if I were profar too
SWING
If he was bunting and the ball passed by his bat, it is a strike. Call it a bad bunt instead of a swing if you like - still a strike.
yeah i think thats a swing
He swung. If this 5 year's ago the ump calls it differently
Swingn’t
There are other ways the pitch could have been avoided to not make a swinging motion, no? He at least started to swing enough that getting out of the way of the ball meant completing the swing.
Profar is literally only known to me for all his bad swings. He went, he could’ve hit that ball and hit it well

No swing periord.

I don’t think so cause he was trying to get out of the way of the pitch at the same time

Swing
It's a swing.. just barely.
Eh, I wanted phillies to win so it's a swing

Mets fans talked shit all year, just to make excuses because Musgrove dominated their favorite team. 😂
To be fair Braves fans, Cardinals fans, and Dodgers fans were also talking a lot of trash.

Profer swung for sure. Totally irrational cry baby reaction.
Swing or not. It was a terrible pitch to swing at. Coming from a padres fan
