Absolutely the most expressively played performance of Summertime I’ve ever watched and listened to. You are right up there with the best of those pianists that you mention and talk about in your lectures. Transcribing Hank Jones had to have been not an easy job in itself. Thank you so much for these great videos . . .
So tasteful! To me the 'have you met hank jones' LP is the blueprint of solo jazz piano playing, so hearing some of his devices explained in isolation is amazing! Thanks so much!
I've transcribed a lot of Hank's things, but just the treble clef and chord symbols. Few pianists have the command of solo piano as he did. There was a lot of varied left hand textures and rhythmic devices. He often played 3/4 figures in the right hand in 4/4 songs. He also did some wonderfully tricky things with whole tone scales and chromatic scales.
Yes, he’s an incredible mixture of precise and “loose” which makes him so hard to imitate precisely. It’s fun and quite challenging to try to play his whole arrangements!
I'm not sure but it seems like you're using a mix of stride, 10ths, rootless voicings and a few other things i can't tell in your left hand. Is there a logic in your choices of what type of accompaniment to play or is it about what feels right to your ear? I'm a beginner trying to move on from only using rootless voicings.
This is a really excellent question! I try to keep it away from being a pattern and more in a kind of "jabbing," unpredictable area. My choices and the proportions of devices that I'm using are drawn from my transcription of Hank and trying to approximate what he's doing as well as my response to my own right hand and what it's doing improvisational. You might want to check out Chapter 5 of my book for some more tips about mixing between covering roots and mid-range voicings.
Beautiful .. congrats on the Hank Jones transcription. Thanks for the learning....very accessible !! I always admire and try to imitate your liquid golden technique.
@@JeremySiskind from my ear you’re doing a great !! job of that: the man has so much grace and depth.. He is a great teacher if only by the example he’s left us. He has set a lofty goal for those who would follow !! Thanks for bringing so much pianism to life Jeremy !!
The first word that comes to mind when Hank Jones plays is, elegant.
Absolutely! He was a master!
Hank is the GOAT!
Man...he's so deep! His sense of harmony, swing, touch, pedalling...it's so elegant and constantly fresh!

That’s very kind! If you’ve never heard Gene Harris’ version, find that one. (I think it’s from a Ray Brown album)

Yep! That’s a great one. Also Tiptoe Tapdance and his Maybeck Recital Hall disc are great and I love his duo album with Joe Lovano.

Mr Siskind this arrangement is in a your book?
Nope - the book is instructional. The arrangement is improvised - never been written down, probably never will be. :)
