i really appreciate how you set up the camera so we could see what it actually looks like through the loupe. so many videos about loupes just describe it and it's hard to find images through the lens

Want I really want to see is a behind the scenes look at just how you have your camera set up and how you so seamlessly line up the loupe with your camera. You have the smoothest close up shots on the tubes!

That was very informative, thanks Ben! I use a 10x loupe, always wanted to get a 20x one. I might hold off a little while longer after seeing how much smaller the focal point is and how much distortion there is

20x are hard to use. You've got to get really close to the item and have a good light source.

My combo is a simple lighted magnifying lens which is a 1x, and a 10x Loupe. My favorite device was a magnifying lens with a built-in 10x focal lens, but have lost that over time.

Thank you for Al-Lateef for your explanation of the ways to use magnifying lenses, but I have a question. Do magnifying lenses help in detecting counterfeit currencies, for example... And what about banknotes... I hope you can help me with my best regards,,

I just bought a couple supercheap 10x loupes a couple weeks ago that meet my needs. Mainly it's to make sure that I truly have what I thought I got. Secondly it helps me see if there's anything unusual like VAMs or damage. Pretty sure they don't work as well as Ben's but for the money they're worth having. That said, a good hard naked eye is the best tool of all, at least for bigger coins like silver dollars.

I just ordered a 10x Hastings triple b&l. I bought one from hobby lobby and it's worthless. Only two lens.
If this one doesn't work for me I'm gonna get one of those German made loupe 20x. Eyes are getting bad and I save coins that are known error coins. Been putting it off bcuz I also just started doing another wheat penny collection. Bought 500 coins and there's a huge list of those errors. Tons of RPMs and DD.

I just use one of the microscopes you can get for about 40 dollars or so on Amazon. I got mine from couch collectables and he's charging double. I should have looked around but this was over a year ago. He's probably charging more now. But I love it it works great for verities.

The B & L with the black ring is a Coddington loupe. Cheaper than a Hastings Triplet. Your other 10 X B & L is probably a Hastings Triplet lens.
What is your opinion of the BelOMO 10 X ?

My eyes have worsened the older I’ve gotten. Only close up, and they’re so blurry. Would you recommend a microscope for around $50-60 dollars?

Hi, I recently took on online ANA class, Grading 101. The teacher was adamant about getting a "hasting triplet" loupe at 5x and 10x. I believe they have 3 lenses in them to prevent distortion. Are the Loupes you showed of this type?

    • @TheCoinGeek
      @TheCoinGeek  4 года назад

The generic loupe does not say if it is a triplet. I believe the BL are both triplets.

Forgive my ignorance, I have bad eyes, I wear progressive glasses (which don't do much for me when it comes to see with sharpness at any distance, I use this type because bi-focus, etc. are worse, again, for me), being said that, what strength would you recommend to see background details in coins, and do magnifying loupes/magnifying lenses come in 5x 10x 20x in one, meaning adjustable? Thank you in advance for your help.

So i just got bough a OGH 1928 S Peace Dollar MS 63 when I got it home i noticed it was an unattributed VAM 3. Should I get it graded with PCGS or NGC? I was told one grading company does better then another in different areas. An example would be send all cents to NGC because they grade them better then PCGS. I'm new to the grading game and very new to the verity game.

What kind of magnification do the grading companies use to determine grades? I recently got a video microscope with 1200X and can see amazing things on my coins - very fine scratching that may be long ago attempts at cleaning that I cannot see with a 10X loupe.

    • @collectingonthecheap56353
      @collectingonthecheap56353 3 года назад

I would bet that most grading companies use a 10x Loupe for most coins, and perhaps a 30x for determining varieties. Pretty much everything I have read about determining grades of coins, and tips from pros say that 10x is the best for coins.

I guess I'll be a lens snob and say that I would only use a quality Hastings triplet loupe and never a pedestrian Coddington. Enough said.

Ok ok ok …… I carried the D40 Zeiss loupe for 14years
It was recently stolen by a low rent government employee (cop) that surly has no clue what a synthetic moisonite / CVD / vvs stone is…..
    😡Sorry for rant😡
    I must confess in 2023 I’m mind blown a zeiss loupe is $125ish 🇺🇸U.S.Dollars
Should I go back to my tried & true?
Or you guys have any better suggestions??
    bausch & lomb?
    Nikon?
    ?belOMO? (Amazon)
    Eschenbach?
Lastly ….. I have a question for the
    Rokex brokers
    watchmakers
    & GIA guys!!
Are high dollar loupes even worth the money?
Or’s it all just a gimmick?
do you truly get what you pay for
I can’t help but to wonder if we’re being conned!!
have we been duped into believing that one guys 3piece convex/polished
glass is more superior that the OTHER guys?
growing up around the olde school pawnbroking community…… all the Jews use the Zeiss!!
This gentile is just trying to save a buck like my Hebrew mentors 😉
    Thanks in advance guys
