    The opening line of Neuromancer sticks with me to this day:
    "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."
    It perfectly describes how the night sky looks above a bustling city at night, but the "color" is dull... bleak ... but with that hint of "electric" glow. For 80's cyberpunk that line sets it up opening scene and tone of the book perfectly. I dunno, maybe its just me.
    Its not an opening line, but later in the Chstsubo bar we get the thoughts of the main character Case, ruminating on the physical looks of the bartender, who is scarred and brutish looking:
    "In an age of affordable beauty, there was something heraldic about his lack of it" Ahhh, I love that stuff.

    The reputation The Left Hand of Darkness has is fully deserved, this novel is phenomenal. In fact, the entire Hainish Cycle is worth reading, but if you only have time for one Ursula Le Guin's book, then The Left Hand of Darkness is an excellent choice.

    I love your humour! You both have such great banter. I especially identify with Richard's comments about the comments, lol, and his reading for pretention rather than enjoyment. In my case, though, it's classics instead of SF. How can one not feel slightly superior when casually saying, 'Yeah, did a little reading recently: Dostoevsky, Hugo, Cervantes."
    And I even spelt Dostoevsky right this time! (I looked it up after.)

  • @KALtheHighstorm117

    Great video, guys! I'm glad my anger at you liking Golden Sun more than Oathbringer caused me to start watching. My character journey is progressing well! I now use your rating system for books, and I've even gotten my cousin, who doesn't watch you guys, to start saying Teeter my Totter lol!
    Speaking of Golden Sun, I just finished reading the original Red Rising trilogy and these are the scores I gave:
    RR - 6.8
    GS - 8.4
    MS - 5.3
    So, overall, I liked the first two books, but Morning Star just fell flat for me. I had a lot of the same issues you did, Austin, and other ones too. I tried to read Iron Gold but just stopped when my eyes glazed over while reading. I know Dark Age is supposed to be great, but I couldn't make it. I might try again someday.
    Now, since I've read your second favorite thing, Austin, I am going to try and convince you to read mine.
    The Faithful and the Fallen by John Gwynne is one of my favorite series, second only to Stormlight. At its core, it is a classic fantasy story told in a modern way. It has familiar tropes (dark lord, coming of age, etc.), but it also has modern vibes and pulls from multiple real world cultures and Christian theology. Gwynne has the ability to get you quickly attached to a large cast of characters, who he often disposes of in a George Martin fashion (so prepare for some heartache). His action scenes are the best I've ever read, definitely on par with or better than Sanderson's. As for the tropes, they really only feel like tropes in the first book, because after that, Gwynne really makes them feel fresh. The plot twist in book 3 made my jaw drop. Animal companions are frequent and done better than I've ever seen, with the exception of Robin Hobb. Finally, Gwynne's greatest strength lies in how he uses POV chapters. They are short, often action packed in a Pierce Brown way, so not a moment feels wasted. He also changes or adds POVs in each book, and he gives POVs to the bad guys, who may not be so bad after all. Who knows, you may shed a tear for some of them....
    Oh, and also, there's giants, and they are awesome. And they get POVs.
    As for the basis of the actual story, I'll give a quick pitch, so back of the book spoilers. Long ago, there was a war between Elyon (the God of this world), and the rebellious angel turned demon Asroth (Satan basically). The world shook, Asroth was defeated, and Elyon retreated in sorrow. Now, the world seems to be going fine, but an ancient prophecy is coming to fruition, and it may be signalling the time for a second God-war. Elyon's champion will be chosen. Asroth's champion will be chosen. Men and giants and angels and demons will battle again, all in service of the Bright Star or the Black Sun. Corban is a young man who wants to serve in the army, but will soon discover that nothing is as it seems. Evnis swore his life to Asroth because he wanted power, but is now finding that his wife and son may be more important than ruling. Veradis has always wanted a purpose beyond his disapproving family, and he has now sworn himself to the service of a noble prince, who may be far more than he seems.
    The first book, Malice, does a lot of setup in the first half, but after that point it kicks into gear and does not let up! This series is action packed, fastpaced, and enthralling, with great characters and worldbuilding. It's not super original, but it takes those tropes and makes them fresh again. But don't take my word for it! I highly recommend Mike's Book Reviews's video on Malice. He perfectly explains the awesomeness of this series. Hope you enjoy!

    I love these videos.
    Also, it finally suddenly hit me that since both of you are wearing headphones, what are you actually hearing? Are you just able to hear each other naturally, or is it like a second delayed? It didn't occur to me but we're hearing voice through mic, but when I'm wearing headphones usually my own voice is muffled and the people I'm talking to aren't in the same room (headphones usually reserved for online gaming during lockdown) so that's something random I suddenly took into account. I'm probably overthinking it and there's no delay. Is it just for podcast purposes so you know instantly if mics stop working?
    Additional question: how does the Thumbnail occur? Feels like theres a funny story behind those.

    • @2ToRamble
      @2ToRamble  9 месяцев назад +3

      Thank you!! And great question - we use the headphones to make sure audio is going through the mic and it’s also easier to hear/focus since our voices are coming direxrly through them. Cuts out any distractions/noises. As for the thumbnail- do you mean how to we put them together (the photos/etc?)

    • @DeltaEntropy
      @DeltaEntropy 9 месяцев назад +2

      Modern audio equipment has up to near-zero latency monitoring, so if you have a semi-decent set up the delay is minor enough to not be noticeable.

    The Lathe of Heaven's opening is much stronger if you give it the first couple of paragraphs to complete the thought and put it in context. It's more a statement of the story's theme and not the beginning of the actual story (and is also beautifully written).
    'Current-borne, wave-flung, tugged hugely by the whole might of ocean, the jellyfish drifts in the tidal abyss. The light shines through it, and the dark enters it. Borne, flung, tugged from anywhere to anywhere, for in the deep sea there is no compass but nearer and farther, higher and lower, the jellyfish hangs and sways; pulses move slight and quick within it, as the vast diurnal pulses beat in the moon-driven sea. Hanging, swaying, pulsing, the most vulnerable and insubstantial creature, it has for its defense the violence and power of the whole ocean, to which it has entrusted its being, its going, and its will.
    But here rise the stubborn continents. The shelves of gravel and the cliffs of rock break from water baldly into air, that dry, terrible outer space of radiance and instability, where there is no support for life. And now, now the currents mislead and the waves betray, breaking their endless circle, to leap up in loud foam against rock and air, breaking…
    What will the creature made all of sea-drift do on the dry sand of daylight; what will the mind do, each morning, waking?'

    I only had 1 problem with Project Hail Mary. It was the ending, pretty much the very last line.
    Spoilers:
    In the end, the MC walks into the room of alien children and asks a question on the material he taught them. Then it says something along the lines of “every one of them raised their claws.” All I could think was “ok, yeah, of course they did. We’ve already established that they have a perfect memory and can’t forget things. If you told it to them, they will know the answer immediately.”

    Fantasy not sci-fi, and I’m not sure I’d get into a fight in terms of ranking but my favorite is “ Lest anyone should suppose that I am a cuckoo’s child, got on the wrong side of a blanket by lusty peasant stock and sold into indenture in a shortfallen season, I may say that I am House-born and reared in the Night-court proper, for all the good it did me.”
