My team is Choy lee fut argentina and they do modern lion dance the hoksan one with the step bow but they lift the head ahead and bring it back. Around 2008's they were doing the traditional futsan one and the bowing style was the traditional basic one but steppingkinda like 1:08, around 2013/2014 they started to do the new hoksan one.
My school does both depending on where we perform. When there's enough space, we usually do the last variation of the traditional bows (lifting the head up), otherwise we do the 3 forms step, but our variation isn't in the video.
We do an odd one. I think it is more traditional futsan. It is hard to describe. Our team name is Summitt lion dance if anyone wants to see what I mean.
Our Lions have not gone through a traditional eye-dotting (prayer ceremony, chicken blood for dotting, etc). In our old team, there are many rules that are applied once you dot the eyes (ex: The Lion can only be used for performances, only the designated Lion dancers can use the Lion, etc.) and we did not want these applied to us. We do our own kai guang to celebrate the coming of a new Lion, which is just a team gathering with the Lion present. Different teams have different beliefs and rules with a kai guang. We may do one in the future with different rules.
We lift our right leg, then take 5 steps, do 3 bows (middle, left, right) and then continue bowing walking backwards then do a cat stance. We do it to the left the second time and right the third time
Hi +Rosheus! These are just a few of the many variations of bows. Different teams and styles have their own types. Different isn't necessarily wrong, and Lion Dance is an art form that can evolve and change overtime. How do you do your steps?
5elementsld so my team trains under sifu siow and we do the kind of hoksan bow which you usually get to see in the Malaysian world lion dance competition.
+Rosheus That's really good! One of our members has trained with him for a short time before. We are planning to visit Malaysia and watch a competition one day :).
