  • Coral reefs around the world are experiencing global bleaching for the fourth time with reef systems from Australia to Florida on the brink of disaster.
The event, a result of warming ocean waters, is expected to be the most extensive on record, and for Australia's Great Barrier Reef, it's the fifth mass bleaching event in eight years.
At least 54 countries and territories have experienced mass bleaching since February 2023, according to NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
