Hi - Thank you for showing how to test... I'm a child abuse survivor and advocate coach. About 3 weeks ago my neighbor who has a garage that butts up to my back yard decided to completely sand down his garage... Honestly I've been dealing with my own things and didn't think about it really, which suddenly I got very sick and was sick mostly the whole time he sanded.
I think he used a circular sander or at the least a power sander. When I finally felt better I got up and looked out in the back yard. There is now this horrible dust every where -- and just at that point it dawned on me there's probably lead in this dust and why I feel so horrible.. I stuck a letter in his door asking if he had tested and to talk with me, but within 4 hours he covered up the whole garage in fresh paint. I've contacted the EPA and the state but according to the city, at least for them, as he did the work himself and now that he's painted it there's nothing that can be done and basically I'm responsible for my yard.
I'm not sure what will come of this, but I'm traumatized by it. There is dust everywhere in the back, the front yard and in my house which I keep trying to clean... I can't imagine how I can ever have my kids, my grandkids or people over ever again as it's in the grass... I envision my beautiful grandbabies walking in the grass and start to cry, I would never put them in a position where they could get poisoned..
I could kick myself over and over... My mistake was first writing that letter to him, thinking he decent enough to take responsibility, I shouldn't have wrote to him, I should have contacted the city. If someone is going to do something like this most often they know what they're doing but if not, they're going to cover it up fast and they really don't care about me, or even himself as he is the one who was probably breathing it in the most lead.
I really don't know where to turn for this... I guess take one step at a time. I have no clue how to get that dust out of the grass, which is now long as I haven't cut it and now a real mess as it's been pouring out... I want to test but not sure where, or what.. the State said there's no need for me to test, as they just assume there's lead in the paint he sanded, as the house was built in 1959.
The only hope it seems is coming from the State where I filed a complaint... but I have no clue what will come of it..

Sorry to hear about that. It sounds like a very unpleasant experience. As you pointed out, it's quite likely that the impact is mostly felt by the person doing the work and/or anyone in their immediate vicinity. As distance increases, the impact should be lesser, as contaminated material becomes more and more dispersed. Similarly, the weather should help with dispersion over time, meaning that the contaminated material spreads farther but there's far less of it. Follow state and local guidelines of course, and seek help as needed if you notice any particularly troubling symptoms---you may not experience any, as dispersion means that the concentrations will be lower with distance and time, and in any case it depends on ingestion. It's a shame your neighbour hasn't acted responsibly.

Most of the homes I work in I don't need to test, I know they have lead paint in them.... pre ww2 houses and built before 1975.
The cut off was 1978, with hold over paint I only test if built between 78-1980 buildings

I have a question a home built in 1994 what are the chance it has lead painting ?

Not likely unless super old paint from before 1978 was being used. Highly unlikely. Newer paint that was should’ve been used.

fines are very stiff on lead. certificate for abatement is a good place to start and don't take shortcuts when doing a job, 7 of 10 historic jobs will have lead positive results.

You look kind of like Stone Cold Steve Austin lmfao. Anyways, my experience with lead paint has come a long way. First of all, I broke the bedroom wall right next to my bed, and it littered paint chips all over the top area. After that, my dad unknowingly helped do my laundry for me. It could already have been clean of lead paint chips and dust although the logic for leftover bleach says otherwise. Like it might not be completely clean and safe to use because it might not have been washed thoroughly that time, but I've accepted it regardless. For the past few weeks, he has sneaked on me and seen me sleeping on my chair. He told me that he thinks I'm crazy. Though with my OCD logic, I couldn't completely lay trust on the blanket. I was scared to admit to him about that stupid lead paint problem because he might think I'm even more crazy. Just yesternight, I tried to be more normal by curling up and sleeping on it. When I woke up, the next thing I know is that I've done something extremely stupid and mouthed the blanket. I've always been telling myself. It's not brave it's stupid to do that. Lastly, do you think I'll be fine from it? Just a note to you, the paint has not been tested with real tests. I'd only acted like it is lead paint for real.
