it’s also how they protect the seeds from forest fires. the tree may perish but the individual petals close up to secure themselves around the seeds inside. (the less airflow, the less flammable) pine forest fires burn hot but quick, so the line of active fire usually blows through an area pretty quickly, so as the temps rise, their petals close and the pine cone burns instead of the seeds, to withstand the fire long enough (hopefully) for the fire to continue on. What’s also beautiful is this leaves the seeds semi- exposed in a now extremely fertile soil thanks to the ash, and now with no brush or bushes to impede it’s ability to soak up the sun - where it can grow to its hearts content. The circle of life truly is beautiful 💜

There are very specific variant of a conifer, on the West Coast, Pinas Contortas. That’s seeds will never germinate after release *unless* the releasing tree is first inside of a forest fire.
The fire triggers the release of a special chemical which allows the cones to open, and the seeds to not be harmed by the extreme soil conditions after a fire.

I live in an area with tons of pine trees. So much so that one of my gradeschool teachers thought it would be a cool fact to explain this in basic terms. Which essentially is just the pinecone adjusting to weather and temperatures so they can release their seeds in “optimal” conditions.
Since the weather here can fluctuate wildly at times, it made it an extra cool fact because some of us students began to study the pinecones every now and then during recesses by just hanging out by the pine trees.
Just a cool way a teacher got some students to engage more with things in nature, since I’m sure tons of plants, not just pinecones, have similar evolutionary traits for this climate.

      Ephesians‬ ‭6:10‭-‬18 says,
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. Breaking your sins into pieces... Repent now, and turn back to the true Lord only.. God bless.

To extract the nuts, we had to bake the pine cone it in the oven for two hours before ot opened up and the nuts fell out. The whole house smelled strongly of turpentine and I ruined a baking pan by staining it with tar that won't wash off.
We gathered about 30 peanut sized stone-hard nuts that needed to be cracked open with a hammer. Half of them actually contained a tiny pine nut seed.
I now realize why pine nuts are so damn expensive.

Some conifer trees rely on wildfires to signal seed release. There are species which close the pods when sensing increased temperatures to protect seeds, then release once the fire has burned off all the competition for sunlight. Nature is cool.

❤🌲 I live in the Redwood Forest & that's not true for Redwood trees. Ie, they don't need fire for their seeds to release & germinate.
The huge Redwood Tree pine cones are very small & round. They release their tiny seeds every year without fire.
There are other Pine Trees that require fire to release their seeds from their pine cones, but not Redwoods.
But, the sap in Redwood trees is fire resistant (not fire proof), & their bark is very thick, so they can often survive fires when other plants & trees burn up. That's how we have Redwood trees that are thousands of years old (sadly most of the really old ancient Redwood trees were cut down in the late 1800s, but there are a few left).
Another side note: even though a Redwood tree can release thousands of seeds each year, most Redwood trees sprout from a mother tree's root system. That's why you can get a circle of Redwood trees growing where the center Mother tree has been cut down. ❤🌲

The reason Pinecones shrink in hot water because the heat causes the scales on the pinecone to close up, it reduces the overall size of the cone. It's a natural response to changes in temperature that helps it conserve moisture and protect its seeds

      Too hot - too cold
I haven’t found a temperature in between there, yet, where I sleep the best
I know cozier and warm is so much better
      Yet, not all night long

"The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good."
      ~ Psalm 14:1
"Satan, who is the god of this world has blinded the minds of those who don't believe.
They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News.
They don't understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God."
      ~ 2 Corinthians 4:4
"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
      ~ 1 Corinthians 1:18-19
"Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen."
      ~ Romans 1:22-25
"But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
      ~ Joshua 24:15
"For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them."
      ~ Matthew 13:15
"Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you rejects Me; and whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”
      ~ Luke 10:16
"Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins."
      ~ James 5:19-20
"And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!"
