it’s also how they protect the seeds from forest fires. the tree may perish but the individual petals close up to secure themselves around the seeds inside. (the less airflow, the less flammable) pine forest fires burn hot but quick, so the line of active fire usually blows through an area pretty quickly, so as the temps rise, their petals close and the pine cone burns instead of the seeds, to withstand the fire long enough (hopefully) for the fire to continue on. What’s also beautiful is this leaves the seeds semi- exposed in a now extremely fertile soil thanks to the ash, and now with no brush or bushes to impede it’s ability to soak up the sun - where it can grow to its hearts content. The circle of life truly is beautiful 💜

I just found this out and I find it very cool. Did you know that pine cones are the female part of a pine tree, and the smaller green things next to them are the male parts.
The pine cone closed because pine cones have 2 layers on its scales. As it’s absorbing water the outer layer is expanding more than the inner layer the scales are pulled inwards and it closes. If you let it dry it will just open again after a while.
❤🌲 I live in the Redwood Forest & that's not true for Redwood trees. Ie, they don't need fire for their seeds to release & germinate. The huge Redwood Tree pine cones are very small & round. They release their tiny seeds every year without fire. There are other Pine Trees that require fire to release their seeds from their pine cones, but not Redwoods. But, the sap in Redwood trees is fire resistant (not fire proof), & their bark is very thick, so they can often survive fires when other plants & trees burn up. That's how we have Redwood trees that are thousands of years old (sadly most of the really old ancient Redwood trees were cut down in the late 1800s, but there are a few left). Another side note: even though a Redwood tree can release thousands of seeds each year, most Redwood trees sprout from a mother tree's root system. That's why you can get a circle of Redwood trees growing where the center Mother tree has been cut down. ❤🌲
@@BeHappyFeelHappy are you thinking of coastal redwoods? Giant sequoias definitely benefit from fire. I grew up in coastal redwoods, now live in the Sierras (giants).
The pine cone gets rehydrated, the reason they open is because they dry out, it is not temperature related, if you put it in cold water it will do the same, it will just take longer because cold water takes more time to be absorbed via Osmosis
That actually makes sense because cold air is devoid of moisture. That’s why a Florida 80° is like a Nevada 100°. As a tree you wouldn’t want to drop your seeds because of one cold night.
That’s actually a wrong… conifers release their pollen depending on weather conditions. A major part of that is humidity. As the pollen is easily able to travel in a humid environment. It’s not through osmosis
@@jedell I’m definitely no expert but osmosis is defined as “the spontaneous passage or diffusion of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane (one that blocks the passage of dissolved substances)” I’m not sure if osmosis is the correct way to describe how water interacts with Pine cones but Sw1nk might be right about that one too. Haha! That’s so funny to me bc when I was growing up, one of my weekly chores was to get all the pine ones out of the yard so I could mow it. It would take me and both of my brothers over an hour to get all the pine cones. I would’ve been envious of someone who had to actually search for a pine cone!
I remember finding one during winter vacation as a kid. Out in the snow, it was completely closed up, but once I took it inside, the next morning it fully opened up to my surprise
Same here, and I always seem to forget this happens. We were in Oklahoma at an Airbnb, and we collected some pinecones, in the rain, on our last day there I had them in a bag, and when we got home, I put them out once they dried they opened up and it freaked me out the next morning. They were three times their size! So cool.
My dad would do that, then place them in mason jars and dry them. The pine cones would then open up and people were amazed that he could get the large cones into a small jar. He would put the lids on and give them to the people. 😊
I had sum plants that were called '' 4 o'clocks " coz they closed in th afternoon & opened again in th morning😁 They looked like a 'pin-wheel' purple & pink colors ❤

The reason Pinecones shrink in hot water because the heat causes the scales on the pinecone to close up, it reduces the overall size of the cone. It's a natural response to changes in temperature that helps it conserve moisture and protect its seeds
We all deal with temperatures in our very own way - I love living and I’m absolutely sure you all do too - so - Too hot - too cold I haven’t found a temperature in between there, yet, where I sleep the best I know cozier and warm is so much better Yet, not all night long Kind of a positive/negative for me Sleep is also an issue although Sleep is my healing mode 💤😴💤 Love my FitBit from a friend to keep me notified You all do need one I have to pay the Fitbit forward and I will
I remember as a child, watching Nature shows and seeing my first time lapsed video. I've been hooked on nature ever since. Blessings all. Life is good. 🙏🏾😊💕
My daughter and I collected some pinecones from the park and I put one of them in a chair on the back porch and every time I went out there the pinecone would either be open or closed; the first time I thought I was tripping and imagining things, thinking “I know damn well that thing was open when we collected it!”☺️
You studied pine cones in 9th grade? If you're trying to make a joke about human anatomy you kinda missed the mark, they don't shrink in hot water, that's cold water you're thinking of.
The water doesnt have to be hot - cold water also closes them. If you remove them from the water then they will slowly open up again as they dry out. You can repeat the process many times, if you wish.
They do that she it’s COLD to protect the seeds and open when it’s WARM to spread the seeds, it has a better chance of getting buried and sprouting when there is no snow.

The pine cone closed because pine cones have 2 layers on its scales. As it’s absorbing water the outer layer is expanding more than the inner layer the scales are pulled inwards and it closes. If you let it dry it will just open again after a while.

Happens in cold water too. They close when wet, open when dry. Redwoods specifically need forest fires to release seeds.
Ohhh that's why all the fires in cali😅😂😂🤣😅
@@edski8536 no that’s because PG&E is a disgusting, neglectful menace. And now we’re all paying for their greed and negligence. It’s sick.
@@DMTsanto Pretty cool that both the largest tree species and the tallest are native to CA.
Oddly enough, _this is what happens to me_ *in cold water*
@@jedell it’s actually the opposite…. It’s easier to travel in dry weather
@@waddakno9644 eh close enough I didn’t pay enough attention in biology knew it had something to do with humidity. Still isn’t osmosis though 🤣
@@jedell I’m definitely no expert but osmosis is defined as “the spontaneous passage or diffusion of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane (one that blocks the passage of dissolved substances)”
I’m not sure if osmosis is the correct way to describe how water interacts with Pine cones but Sw1nk might be right about that one too.
I’m honestly not sure & dont really feel like diving that deep into research rn. Either way… I’m gonna play with pine cones next time I see em lol

They do that in dangerous weather such as stormy, cold, etc. to prevent damage to the seeds. In the spring they open and release the seeds
That’s a good way of predicting the weather in a survival situation. If the pinecones, some flowers and some other plants close in, expect rain

The reason Pinecones shrink in hot water because the heat causes the scales on the pinecone to close up, it reduces the overall size of the cone. It's a natural response to changes in temperature that helps it conserve moisture and protect its seeds
Thanks Sheldon😊
