IYV Dream-90 pickup install!

- So I've decided to go back with P-90s! but instead of reinstalling the one I pulled out, I bought a higher output, quick plug set from GFS. Over all, the difference is very subtle, but I'm happy with it!

Another cool vid, Jason. After seeing the comments below... yes. I also have that IYV ITF-400. The red Tele with cream color P-90s. And yes. They are absolutely smokin ! That guitar sounds amazing. I like what you did here. That quick-plug system is so nifty, & I've been wanting to try a set or two of them. Would love to do some P-90s on one of my guitars, & try it. Your guitar sounds sweet now! I Love that set-up. Thin Lizzy rocks! Hope the ankle is healing nicely, Bud!

Yeah the quick plug system is great when you want to swap out pickups... cool and simple system for sure when you like to change things up!

I bought the same style p90s with white pearl tops, but were crap so back they went. Glad I had my test rig guitar.

Interesting... they were crap because you got a bad set, or you just didn't like how they sounded? I think this set sounds great! Thicker and more articulate than the Amazon set.

i think the dream90s had more "beef" to them...bridge nice n spanky and the neck like thikk syrup wooo! and middle chirpy like crickets(hum cancelling too).....
they drove the amp a bit more as well too...

A couple points:
1) Regarding the “feedback” you speak of: There is a big difference between acoustic resonance kind of feedback (i.e., the strings resonating in sympathy with the sounds from the amplifier) and microphonic pickup feedback (which generally produces more of an unmusical high-pitched squealing sound). It is the former, NOT the latter, that some guitarists like Jimi Hendrix use. The latter is the kind that better pickups can fix, while the former can be fixed by switching to a fully solid body guitar.
2) Most matched sets of pickups tend to be RW/RP (reverse-wound, reverse polarity) from each other, so that when they are both active, you can get hum cancelling. They do NOT produce the same kind of sound as a humbucker though, for a couple of reasons: 1) They are wired in parallel, NOT in series as humbucking pickups are, and 2) The pickup aperture is still more like a single coil, so its frequency response curve is like a single coil.
Awesome man! Thanks for the technical info! Yeah it all makes sense. I sort of thought that's what it was, but the GFS description about full humbucker mode in the middle position through me off lol. I think the feedback I was getting with the Amazon P90s was the beginning of a pup going microphonic... not pleasant at all... kind of like sharp short squeals when using heavier drives. Not predominant by any means, but just enough to be annoying...

I'm not sure but a lot of the pickups that are humbucker size P90s on Amazon are ceramic magnet type,and seem to trebley to me, I'm looking for alnico humbucker size P90s, they do have a few,and that can make all the difference in the P90s, useally most budget guitars come with ceramic pickups,and I always have to change them out because they don't sound good,maybe some do, but I've had way better luck with alnico pickups,there's really no way to tell what's under the hood of pickup,I do have the IYV Tele with the P90s in it, and they sound amazing,but they might be ceramic.
Cool 2Daze! Yeah I hear you. I'm an Alnico guy too! Especially with tele single coil pups. These GFS P-90s are better than the Amazon ones for sure, but not sure what they're constructed with! I have heard from many that the IYV ITF400 like you have sounds amazing with the stock P-90s...

WOW! I was just revisiting this video for pickup ideas… So is the Fatbody pickup you took out of this guitar the same one that’s now in your LyxPro? I never would’ve believed this, but the Dream-90 actually sounds better than the Fatbody! The Fatbody sounded slightly muddy by comparison, which is the opposite of what I was expecting. BOTH of them sound fatter than a true vintage Tele bridge pickup though, which is what I would expect, since P90’s are constructed and wound very differently from Tele pickups. Humbucker-sized P90’s can never be wound exactly like a true P90, given the humbucker bobbin width constraints, but good ones can come close.

Yeah the P90 is overall punchier, fuller etc... however the fatbody was the vintage wound version at only 5.5K. I found it a little weak in the IYV...
I have a fatbody in my Ammoon oreo edition tele as well but this one is the overwound one at 10K!
It takes overdrive extremely well, but it's harsher with clean tones 😀
Did you replace the neck or just the tuners?
Hey Kevin, back when I forst got it I just changed the tuners. A year later I discovered the neck warped, twisted almost over night it seemed! So I eventually changed the neck. The original neck was nice. I installed a heat pump in the basement and it got so dry down there that my IYV neck paid the price!
