As most of you know, a few months ago we held a Kickstarter campaign for a show we wanted to make called Forbidden Explorers. We managed to raise $13,000 but were still shy of our goal, and since the campaign was all-or-nothing, we ended with nothing. All we had were a bunch of designs, plans, and ideas, but no funds to make them a reality- we needed a new approach. We decided to take some of the most practical ideas for the show and incorporate them into a new series on our channel using funding from our existing Patreon campaign, and that's what you're seeing here. It's a far cry from our original plans for Forbidden Explorers, but hopefully if this new series is popular enough, we can gradually sculpt it into something even greater! These guys are seriously the best urban explorers I’ve seen on RUclips. They don’t play up drama, they conduct thorough explorations, they give good backgrounds on the sites, and even seem to have a bit of knowledge on structural engineering. Cheers to The Proper People! I mean the title is misleading.... they weren't in any actual dd's danger (I mean outside of falling)... it's not an abandoned nuclear plant saying its abandoned gives the false assumption that it was ever actually used which it wasn't... it's a cancelled nuclear power plant meaning building was never completed the only thing that was fully built was one of the big ass cooling towers...none the nuclear reactors or housings were ever completed and the whole project was scrapped
My dad helped build this place in the late 70's and early 80's. He was laid off when they decided not to finish this place. I worked at one of the warehouses that was used for the construction of the plant. It was turned into a small factory but I had a view of the cooling tower everyday. always wished I had jumped over the fence. This is located in Hartsville TN. Thanks for the tour guys!
@@mrfriendlyson9037 It was going to be a nuclear power plant in the tiny town of Hartsville, TN. Construction was never completed, but that cooling tower is still there. You can see it from the highway, I used to pass it every day. I once got as close as I could without having to go over fences, and the size of the cooling tower is crazy! I knew it was an enormous structure, but when you get as close as I was, it seems even bigger.
Some of the simplest things are so amazing in the new series... Even Michael sitting down on site and talking directly to us about the history of the abandoned facility, rather than doing a voice-over later on. More professional, and kind of personal and intimate with the viewer. A big step up from what was already amazing. Ready to upgrade my Patreon donation. People kinda also want to display their work and I guess this is so remote, as Nuclear Power Plants are usually, so people don't see reason to go there with backpack of spray cans to paint something only few people could see.
@Melanie L Well there's just pure vandalism or straight up writing with spray paints to the walls with all kinds of funny words to describe certain bodyparts that are for human reproduction, that's all something no one really wants to see on their way to work. But I at least can give some respect for people who paint real graffitis, surely sometimes they're totally misplaced and can be classified as vandalism, but sometimes they're in such places that they barely harm the property or infrastructure. Some of the artists are also really good and that shows on their work. It's just a way for someone to express their artistic side, and if they want to give some color to dark and dull looking underpasses, why not... It's part of the urban culture.
@Melanie L Maybe because sometimes they've been paid to paint graffiti for the business owner or otherwise public wall that's been permitted to have graffitis to be painted, to have some place for these "shitbags" to paint completely legally.
I am a retired nuclear power plant chemist and radiation protection engineer. Based on what I can see, these look like the Washington Nuclear Units 4 and 5 power plants, which were abandoned in 1982. Unit 4 was 25% complete and Unit 5 was 17% complete. The Washington Public Power Supply System halted construction at the two units after it failed to sell enough bonds to complete the construction. Abandonment of the two units led to the company’s defaulting on $2.2 billion in municipal bonds.
This is definitely not the one in Satsop. Satsop only had two reactors, and is not technically abandoned, as the county of Grays Harbor owns the property and uses the buildings as a business park.
I was thinking that before he actually stepped there. Look again and you will see that the light area is where the sheet had been for a long time but had been moved leaving a shadow of its former position. Notice there was no sound of sheet metal when he stepped there.

Google about that incident mentioned in this video and other 7 power plants that also were never finished eventually you find out.. but for others there is no good reason to tell anybody.

19:36 that pipe was probably leaking some sort of gas. In the USA (I don’t know about other countries) they added a smell that attracts vultures to gas. By doing this, the people would just look at where the vultures are and know where a gas leak is. (It would also explain why it stinks so much)
Usually when a nuclear plant reaches the end of its working life, it has to be sealed up due to radioactive contamination. But in this case, as the plant was never finished it never had any radioactive fuel - so no danger of irradiation!
They have one but they can't use it in sites that are actively patrolled by a security service like this one. It's too easy to spot and a dead giveaway of their presence.

In 2018 and beyond we still have people that don't realize the propaganda against both lead paint and asbestos is largely exaggerated and in many instances flat-out false. FYI the lead paint tastes very good and sweet. This is what was used to propagate the myth that there was some kind of epidemic of kids eating lead paint chips. Why the "war" against lead paint? Well, when applied to a properly prepped surface it can last for 50-100 years without fading or flaking. It generally offers more vibrant colors AND the metallic content insulates against radio waves, esp the high frequency radio waves used by cell phones, wifi and upcoming 5G. Asbestos, on the other hand, is one of the best insulators out there...but when you have massive buildings well-insulated how are you going to artificially drive up the cost of energy? I know, promote inferior insulators as being "safer" while simultaneously demonizing asbestos (as if you really think that breathing in fiberglass dust isn't going to have lasting effects).
@Alpha Force fibre glass is bad, but asbestos is worse, it gets on all your clothes and you can’t just wipe it off, only a fraction of it needs to get into your lungs to cause problems. I’m no asbestos expert but why else would most countries ban the use of asbestos insulation, and if any of it is found specialist removal costing thousands of pounds is required, doesn’t make sense. Btw do you have experience with lead paint or asbestos, just would like to know....
An old Army trick. Buy a luminous compass. From your start point shoot an azimuth or direction then move slowly towards your destination or objective so you can avoid obstacles. Its easy with 2 guys. One carries the compass and the other goes forward. The guy with the compass can tell the guy from a short distance of 25 yards or when he is visible to go left or right and stand still then move up. This can be done silently using hand and arm signals with stealth in mind. This is an old way of navigating in the dark before sunrise. I did this back in the dark forests of Germany and the jungles in Panama and thick bushes at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. It works.

Usually gotta make sure both ends are on something. Seen people fall when getting close to one end and their weight lifts the plank causing the person to crash down because that side was floating.

@@jackkollhoff9519 The amount of clearance you have to get to get in a nuclear plant is very strict. A Yellow vest, hard hat, and clipboard aren't going to get ya in. My cousin works for a power company and has had to go to nuclear plants. A guy went on a smoke break, that worked there, and nearly got arrested because he had to climb along some catwalks, unauthorized, when a door shut behind him. It was his only way to get back to an area with a door he could get into. All the doors lock automatically. They take security VERY seriously at these places. You'd have better luck storming Area 51 just about, without proper paper work anyway lol However, with proper paper work, or on a guided tour, it's possible and easy. Just no photography in most power plants in general, not just nuclear.
This is in Hartsville, TN. It's sketchy because it's right by a high security prison, that's why the guard was there. Every time I go, all the fences are shiny and new because people use wire cutters to get in and explore
You are exactly right..this is right beside Trousdale Turner Correctional Facility (TTCC) which is one of the highest security prisons in TN (and one of the most dangerous) for sure!! But don't ask me how I know 😂
I wonder if the security around there uses the vultures as cheap alarm system, when you see forty of them taking off maybe it's time to go listen for intruders... XD
Ehhhh highly doubt it was security because there is nothing really to guard or protect..I mean whose going to be able to steal a couple tons of scrap metal 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️... and it wasn't an abandoned nuclear plant, it was a cancelled nuclear power plant, the only thing that was completely built is the big ass cooling tower other than that not a,single core or reactor was ever completed so it was never active so it's no risk to anyone unless they fall and break their neck

id love to by a boatload of abandon shit like this and leave it to decay. for a fee, and a waiver form, you can explore. maybe part of the fun woukd be if securiry catches you, you're booted out just like a real abandoned property. idk i just think too many spaces try to explicitly control or decide the movement of people when in them, instead of promoting freedom of movememt.
I know what red light is used for in a dark scenario and no, no it won't. It preserves night vision, prevents retina burn. It doesn't "enhance" night vision and it doesn't let you see when there is no light.
You see better with white light than red light. Red light only makes sense when preserving your night vision and preventing retina burn and other visual artifacts makes sense. When it is so dark without light that you can't see no matter no how - such as demonstrated in their infiltration of the site at 3am in the forest - Red light makes no sense. Red light would not help them here. They wouldn't see better, they would be just as visible to other people and just as blind when it was turned off. They were not suffering from disturbed night vision, they were suffering from total blackness. I'd put money on the prediction that they wouldn't have seen that spider if they were using red light. I'm fairly certain you don't actually have any experience with red light or any night blindness scenario besides in your bedroom at bed time.
There was something I found odd throughout the entire video but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Towards the end I realized it was the complete lack of graffiti. Kinda refreshing, almost like you two were some of the only people to do this

The round things you’re referring to as “reactor cores” is actually cooling towers.. Reactor cores are seated in concrete beds, where the actual fuel bundles are located.
The reactors weren’t finished so that’s why the concrete wasn’t surrounding it yet. You can see some concrete in construction around the second reactor at 19:50.
Seems a shame the nuclear power station was never finished, would have cost a huge amount of money to get it to this stage. Great video guys, love to see more soon!
Mufasa Greatone. After the Three Mile Island accident and partial meltdown all Nuclear Reactors were hit with huge regulation changes. Reactors like this one under construction had the regulations change all the time it became to costly to keep up. No new Nuclear Reactors were ever completed and or brought online after TMI some were changed to gas fired power stations others were abandoned it really depended on how far construction was from completion. This one was cheeper to abandon then to continue as a conventional power plant. Here in Michigan the one in Midland was near completion but was never going to receive it's operation certificate so it was converted to natural gas in the mid 80's.
You must have set off a silent alarm for the security guard to have shown up at this *abandoned* building. Only other way he could’ve shown up would be that him and other security guards show up every day to just make sure nothing sus happens

The “pipes” you saw in the reactor are what would’ve held the graphite neutralizing rods and the core rods. They would’ve been able to move the graphite and the control rods in and out to control the rate of reaction.
are you sure? i don't know what type of reactor this is, but i'm pretty sure there were never any commercial graphite moderated reactors in the united states.

Those "pipes" you saw were actually disused control rods which would have regulated the reaction in the core. You actually entered the reaction chamber of the core.

Completely false. Those were instrumentation drytube housings... the space he entered is known in the industry as “under vessel” because it is below the actual reactor vessel (the huge rusty cylinder) so the actual “core” where fission would’ve taken would start about 18 feet above his head on the other side of 9 inches of high carbon steel. -K Ps i work in the nuke industry (since 2012) as a non-licensed operator/ fuel mover. Not just a keyboard warrior, I’m extremely passionate about dispelling false information and myths surrounding nuclear power.
Lucky the tva police didnt catch them. This is the hartsville TN location. I was outside the fence and was approached and asked to leave. The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) police are super protective of these locations.

The most bizarre thing about a nuclear cooling tower, or any cooling tower for that matter is that when they are operational and you stand at the bottom, there is just a wall of water is pouring down inside because of the immense amount of condensation coming off of the steam pipes. It takes a very long trip through the cooling system to get the water used for generation back to a safe temperature to release into the local river. If memory serves from my brief time working on various nuclear sites, the discharge water can't be more than 82° Fahrenheit. Considering that open loop system can, I was told, hit over 320° nominal, that's a significant differential to make happen and stuff such as algae build up and even just an unusually hot summer can increase intake temperatures to the point where the existing cooling structure can't handle it. One project I worked on was basically adding another cooling tower to an existing plant because of similar reasons. The last one was assembling a 4th-level-redundant backup cooling system that could be plumbed in and powered by on-site diesel-powered generators in case of a total system shutdown. I didn't get to see the end of that project since the reactor it was designed for didn't go online until a few years after I left the business. Cool stuff, even if it is mildly terrifying to think about.
The reason you use a cooling tower is to not release water into a river. It's a recycling device. Hot springs empty into rivers as well. One set of hot springs I know of have water temperatures at 143ºF (62ºC).
What's fucked up is that not enough people are buying up my Impact a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to move out of the desert into a forested area like where this nuclear power plant stands. It would be nice to write that someone falls into the cooling tower and before they hit the water on the bottom, the steam alone through which they fell causes their entire skin to float off their body in one fell swoop like a tablecloth yanked up by the wind.

Just a tip to never get hassled by security when exploring places like that where a high vis vest and hard hat and cause you already have cameras you tell them your contractors inspecting the property for demolition works every time..
This is one of the most amazing videos I've seen on RUclips. Stranger and scarier than most science fiction. The minimal use of music and sound was extremely effective. I also have to say the technology displayed is awesome even in ruins.Too bad we can't channel that know-how into something positive. I went through the Three Mile Island disaster and the plant was finally closed down last Friday. Maybe you can explore that at some point.
Any reactor that has (or had) radioactive material in it is going to be under very tight security. And the penalties for messing with that stuff are very high.

16:41 4 out of the 7 are operational. The 3 abandoned ones are yellow creek, phipps bend, and hartsville, the one they are exploring. The 4 operational ones include browns ferry, sequoyah, watts bar, and bellefonte.

You can see it from the highway, I used to pass it every day. I once got as close as I could without having to go over fences, and the size of the cooling tower is crazy! I knew it was an enormous structure, but when you get as close as I was, it seems even bigger.

@Melanie L Well there's just pure vandalism or straight up writing with spray paints to the walls with all kinds of funny words to describe certain bodyparts that are for human reproduction, that's all something no one really wants to see on their way to work.
But I at least can give some respect for people who paint real graffitis, surely sometimes they're totally misplaced and can be classified as vandalism, but sometimes they're in such places that they barely harm the property or infrastructure. Some of the artists are also really good and that shows on their work. It's just a way for someone to express their artistic side, and if they want to give some color to dark and dull looking underpasses, why not... It's part of the urban culture.

I am a retired nuclear power plant chemist and radiation protection engineer. Based on what I can see, these look like the Washington Nuclear Units 4 and 5 power plants, which were abandoned in 1982. Unit 4 was 25% complete and Unit 5 was 17% complete. The Washington Public Power Supply System halted construction at the two units after it failed to sell enough bonds to complete the construction. Abandonment of the two units led to the company’s defaulting on $2.2 billion in municipal bonds.

This is definitely not the one in Satsop. Satsop only had two reactors, and is not technically abandoned, as the county of Grays Harbor owns the property and uses the buildings as a business park.

that pipe was probably leaking some sort of gas. In the USA (I don’t know about other countries) they added a smell that attracts vultures to gas. By doing this, the people would just look at where the vultures are and know where a gas leak is. (It would also explain why it stinks so much)
Usually when a nuclear plant reaches the end of its working life, it has to be sealed up due to radioactive contamination. But in this case, as the plant was never finished it never had any radioactive fuel - so no danger of irradiation!

In 2018 and beyond we still have people that don't realize the propaganda against both lead paint and asbestos is largely exaggerated and in many instances flat-out false.
FYI the lead paint tastes very good and sweet. This is what was used to propagate the myth that there was some kind of epidemic of kids eating lead paint chips. Why the "war" against lead paint? Well, when applied to a properly prepped surface it can last for 50-100 years without fading or flaking. It generally offers more vibrant colors AND the metallic content insulates against radio waves, esp the high frequency radio waves used by cell phones, wifi and upcoming 5G.
Asbestos, on the other hand, is one of the best insulators out there...but when you have massive buildings well-insulated how are you going to artificially drive up the cost of energy? I know, promote inferior insulators as being "safer" while simultaneously demonizing asbestos (as if you really think that breathing in fiberglass dust isn't going to have lasting effects).
@Alpha Force fibre glass is bad, but asbestos is worse, it gets on all your clothes and you can’t just wipe it off, only a fraction of it needs to get into your lungs to cause problems. I’m no asbestos expert but why else would most countries ban the use of asbestos insulation, and if any of it is found specialist removal costing thousands of pounds is required, doesn’t make sense.

An old Army trick. Buy a luminous compass. From your start point shoot an azimuth or direction then move slowly towards your destination or objective so you can avoid obstacles. Its easy with 2 guys. One carries the compass and the other goes forward. The guy with the compass can tell the guy from a short distance of 25 yards or when he is visible to go left or right and stand still then move up. This can be done silently using hand and arm signals with stealth in mind. This is an old way of navigating in the dark before sunrise. I did this back in the dark forests of Germany and the jungles in Panama and thick bushes at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. It works.

@@jackkollhoff9519 The amount of clearance you have to get to get in a nuclear plant is very strict. A Yellow vest, hard hat, and clipboard aren't going to get ya in. My cousin works for a power company and has had to go to nuclear plants. A guy went on a smoke break, that worked there, and nearly got arrested because he had to climb along some catwalks, unauthorized, when a door shut behind him. It was his only way to get back to an area with a door he could get into. All the doors lock automatically. They take security VERY seriously at these places. You'd have better luck storming Area 51 just about, without proper paper work anyway lol
However, with proper paper work, or on a guided tour, it's possible and easy. Just no photography in most power plants in general, not just nuclear.
This is in Hartsville, TN. It's sketchy because it's right by a high security prison, that's why the guard was there. Every time I go, all the fences are shiny and new because people use wire cutters to get in and explore

I know what red light is used for in a dark scenario and no, no it won't. It preserves night vision, prevents retina burn. It doesn't "enhance" night vision and it doesn't let you see when there is no light.
You see better with white light than red light. Red light only makes sense when preserving your night vision and preventing retina burn and other visual artifacts makes sense. When it is so dark without light that you can't see no matter no how - such as demonstrated in their infiltration of the site at 3am in the forest - Red light makes no sense. Red light would not help them here. They wouldn't see better, they would be just as visible to other people and just as blind when it was turned off. They were not suffering from disturbed night vision, they were suffering from total blackness.
I'd put money on the prediction that they wouldn't have seen that spider if they were using red light. I'm fairly certain you don't actually have any experience with red light or any night blindness scenario besides in your bedroom at bed time.

The round things you’re referring to as “reactor cores” is actually cooling towers.. Reactor cores are seated in concrete beds, where the actual fuel bundles are located.

The reactors weren’t finished so that’s why the concrete wasn’t surrounding it yet. You can see some concrete in construction around the second reactor at 19:50.

Mufasa Greatone. After the Three Mile Island accident and partial meltdown all Nuclear Reactors were hit with huge regulation changes. Reactors like this one under construction had the regulations change all the time it became to costly to keep up. No new Nuclear Reactors were ever completed and or brought online after TMI some were changed to gas fired power stations others were abandoned it really depended on how far construction was from completion. This one was cheeper to abandon then to continue as a conventional power plant. Here in Michigan the one in Midland was near completion but was never going to receive it's operation certificate so it was converted to natural gas in the mid 80's.
You must have set off a silent alarm for the security guard to have shown up at this *abandoned* building. Only other way he could’ve shown up would be that him and other security guards show up every day to just make sure nothing sus happens

The “pipes” you saw in the reactor are what would’ve held the graphite neutralizing rods and the core rods. They would’ve been able to move the graphite and the control rods in and out to control the rate of reaction.

Those were instrumentation drytube housings... the space he entered is known in the industry as “under vessel” because it is below the actual reactor vessel (the huge rusty cylinder) so the actual “core” where fission would’ve taken would start about 18 feet above his head on the other side of 9 inches of high carbon steel.

Lucky the tva police didnt catch them. This is the hartsville TN location. I was outside the fence and was approached and asked to leave. The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) police are super protective of these locations.

The most bizarre thing about a nuclear cooling tower, or any cooling tower for that matter is that when they are operational and you stand at the bottom, there is just a wall of water is pouring down inside because of the immense amount of condensation coming off of the steam pipes. It takes a very long trip through the cooling system to get the water used for generation back to a safe temperature to release into the local river.
If memory serves from my brief time working on various nuclear sites, the discharge water can't be more than 82° Fahrenheit. Considering that open loop system can, I was told, hit over 320° nominal, that's a significant differential to make happen and stuff such as algae build up and even just an unusually hot summer can increase intake temperatures to the point where the existing cooling structure can't handle it. One project I worked on was basically adding another cooling tower to an existing plant because of similar reasons. The last one was assembling a 4th-level-redundant backup cooling system that could be plumbed in and powered by on-site diesel-powered generators in case of a total system shutdown. I didn't get to see the end of that project since the reactor it was designed for didn't go online until a few years after I left the business.
Cool stuff, even if it is mildly terrifying to think about.

intake temps are around 120-130 into the tower. discharge temps are about 80 depending on the time of year.
The reason you use a cooling tower is to not release water into a river. It's a recycling device. Hot springs empty into rivers as well. One set of hot springs I know of have water temperatures at 143ºF (62ºC).
What's fucked up is that not enough people are buying up my Impact a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to move out of the desert into a forested area like where this nuclear power plant stands. It would be nice to write that someone falls into the cooling tower and before they hit the water on the bottom, the steam alone through which they fell causes their entire skin to float off their body in one fell swoop like a tablecloth yanked up by the wind.

Holy Shit finally an explorers channel where the people actually know what they're talking about. I was impressed by the amount of knowledge you had about a nuclear power plant, most explorers will just make shit up because they have no idea what they're looking at. Great video

This is one of the most amazing videos I've seen on RUclips. Stranger and scarier than most science fiction. The minimal use of music and sound was extremely effective. I also have to say the technology displayed is awesome even in ruins.Too bad we can't channel that know-how into something positive. I went through the Three Mile Island disaster and the plant was finally closed down last Friday. Maybe you can explore that at some point.
Any reactor that has (or had) radioactive material in it is going to be under very tight security. And the penalties for messing with that stuff are very high.

Eh, be nice but, pardon my sarcasm, but in this sue happy society there is too much risk of an explorer getting injured or killed and there being a backlash, either by the explorer's remaining family or by public opinion impacting the property owner. You know, the public going "OMG! You shouldn't have let them in to that death trap, you are such a horrible person for doing so." , whine, whine, wimper, simper, etc. >.< Personally, if they are prepared, of sound mind and body, sign the right indemnity forms, sure, what happens is all on them, but that's not how the world works.

Also learn about insurance, people complain about the sue happy culture and then complain about things that YOUR FUCKING INSURANCE SUES ON YOUR BEHALF AUTOMATICALLY. You let your insurer sue, or else they don't insure you. Insurance companies are doing most of these 'wahhh baby lawsuits' that you're talking about. Again, won't anyone think of the billionaires?
