  • Despite its infamous reputation, Surströmming is not merely edible but enjoyable when prepared properly and paired with the right ingredients. Here I chose:
    ------------------------
Potatoes (cannot get mandelpotatis here so used general purpose potatoes)
    Onions
Sour cream (could not get gradfil here so used a Russian sour cream)
    Tomatoes
    tunnbrod (thin Scandinavian flatbread)
vasterbottensost (a sharp, nutty Swedish cheese, could substitute perhaps Parmesane type cheeses or Manchego if needed).
    Vodka
Opening the tin is one of the more important tasks to get right. The safest way to do this is to open it underwater, for example in the kitchen sink. The fish should be washed and then taken outside, ideally in a sealed container. We packed these and went to the park.
When complete, all garbage should be immediately thrown in an outdoor trash canister, in a sealed container and any contaminated cloth items washed in the laundry.
For those in Berlin/Germany I got the primary Swedish ingredients at www.schweden-markt.de/

I know a man who ate pure surstroemming, washed down with beer. By the way, he really liked it

That's impressive. I tasted a small bit fresh my first time. And it was intense and very salty.

What is a good substitute for tunnbrod if i cant find one at my place? Living in central Europe

You could use another flatbread or you can just omit it. Note that some tunnbrod is soft, but much of it has barley and rye added. If you are in Central Europe though I would assume you could get some at the same place you got the surstromming. But if not, maybe that helps.
You could also use a crisp bread like wasa or the like.
