      And then dying out trying to find those dope beats somewhere, remember using SoulSeek the most rarest p2p underground networking and exchanging with vinyl records being digitized, it was so rare that in my Latvia country I was the Number 1 music digger related to brake dance and rare hiphop, I love that time so much as that's my childhood.

    • @ShoesMagoo
      @ShoesMagoo 6 лет назад +2

      I watched BOTY '99 over and over and over, doing the press pause button repeatedly to get a slo-mo effect so I could pick up the finer details of power moves. Slowly, people started to put up tutorials on breakin forums... _text_ tutorials lol. Lots of hours spent trying to figure everything out on my own, lots of bruises and scrapes, twists and sprains. Years later, there are dozens of tutorials for everything right at the fingertips of the newcomers. Enjoy the free knowledge, everyone.

      if we had youtube back then everybody would look the same like they do now, youtubes really killed the mystery, not knowing your opponent was half the excitement, now you know his trademarks everything about his dance up front

    • @MacMac1313
      @MacMac1313 4 года назад +1

      @@oldskoolfool141 FACT !!!!
      I got into breaking in 98 but was still a kid. By 2001 I was beginning to learn actual basic power. By 2003 I borrowed FSS5 and the move I fantasized about ( Airflare ) was being done before my eyes ( Moy, Qurious George, Ruen, etc ... ). I never knew it existed up until that point !
      That's when I started getting serious about breaking and I learned in about a year and a half how to do many power moves including Airflare. My form wasn't the best but it was decent for that time given I had no flexibility.
      Nowadays, everybody looks the same as you said. So much that I think 6 years ago is when I actually stopped breaking given my lifestyle and other distractions. It wasn't interesting to try and keep improving. All the Asians practice the same power moves and power combos. They are all ripoffs of each other.
      The whole part of getting a hold of a VHS, slowing and rewinding moves to be able to learn and practice while showing up to a jam or a party where you were oblivious as to whether or not you might run into someone who could get down was the whole element of surprise. Just like Kujo said about his style in an interview. Nobody knew what you had in your arsenal and nobody knew whether you improved or not.
      That was the best part about breaking looking back.

    this was at the height of my own personal b-boying experience -- i had some injuries and broken bones in Nov 1998 that put me out of action for awhile, and then college and life just happened and i never seriously got back into dancing. but my heart has always been with the b-boy culture to this day.

    The highlight of this tape, for me, was in one of the earlier rounds, when Ivan sprang up and down, first on one hand, then on his elbow, then on his chest! I'd never seen anything like it before at the time, and it blew my mind. I remember Alien Ness trying the same move, at the 2000 UK B-boy Champs, but it didn't look anywhere near as good. Does anyone know how old Ivan is now?

    Yeaah, I definitely agree. It's just a lot of crews these days at jams just seem to have so little regard for each other's space, moves, and demeanor. Sometimes it's pretty disrespectful. But a battle is a battle, and it's subjective to each bboy to take it how they want. But I agree with what you're saying!

Freestyle session was definitely number one bboy video competition for me.

    Crews still have respect for eachother. But it just so happens the crews battling here have members that inspired eachother, done shows together, and are good friends. Crews nowadays will have the same respect if they are as cool with eachother as the crews here. Sometimes there is the hardcore battle mentality too. Enemies during the battle, friends afterwards.
