In response to your final statement: the larger issue with "fake deep," to me isn't that it falls short intellectually, but rather that it's being used to manipulate. It was a day like any other. Anthony Fantano, the Internet’s busiest music nerd, was hard at work listening to music that he was to review. It was sunny, and slightly humid, so he had left his shirt off for the day. His girlfriend was dealing with an emergency at work. But all of a sudden, Anthony heard a knock at his door. His muscles rippled as he got up from his desk chair. He slowly walked to the door… He saw a dark silhouette through the window. “I wonder who that could be…?” Anthony wondered. He slowly opened the door. And, to his great surprise, his biggest idol was standing before him… MC Ride. Or as his friends call him, Stefan. MC Ride peeked in the doorway, and said, “H-hey… um I don’t know if you know me… b-but I’m in a band and our van broke down about a half mile back… I w-was hoping you had some tools laying around…” Now, although Anthony had always loved Death Grips and their music, he tried to play it cool. After all, he kind of had a crush on Stefan ever since he heard his voice on Beware. Luckily, Anthony had a big shed in his back yard full of his dad’s old mechanic tools. Anthony smiled, and replied, “Sure… I recognize you. What band again? Deaf grapes or something?” “N-no… Death Grips…” answered MC Ride. Anthony laughed. “ha-ha, that’s right! just come on in! I could definitely give you a tool to use…” He led MC Ride to his back yard. On the way, He could feel Ride’s gaze on him. He wondered if he liked what he saw. He opened the door to the shed, and Ride quickly shuffled in to grab what he needed. “He’s even cuter in real life…” Thought Anthony. On the way back, Anthony hastily offered Ride a beer. “Hey man, want to have a beer? You seem like a cool dude.” “Well… Zach and Andy are waiting for me… but I guess a quick beer wouldn’t hurt I guess.” Mumbled Ride. At first, they sat awkwardly in Fantano’s living room. But then they started talking about Death Grips and other music. They were soon off on a riveting conversation. After a while, Anthony said; “hey… I haven’t really been honest with you Stefan… Can I call you that? To tell the truth, I know a lot about Death Grips. I’m pretty much your biggest fan.” “Ha-ha… Yes I know… and I have to confess something too. I watch almost all of your video reviews. Y-you could say that I’m your biggest fan.” Anthony then did something very risky. He laid his hand on Stefan’s leg, right above the knee. Their eyes met, and the next thing Anthony knew, their lips were locked and they were lying on the couch together. “Can Andy and Zach wait?” asked Anthony. Ride’s response was to continue kissing him. They made out like this for a few minutes, and then Ride started slowly moving down to Anthony’s private area, kissing his beautiful chest on the way down. “Please” whispered Anthony. MC Ride slowly unbuttoned Anthony’s black shorts. Anthony’s rock hard penis sprang up, and MC Ride started sucking it off. It was the best blowjob of Anthony’s life. Far better than any blowjob his girlfriend had ever given him. The way Stefan’s tongue moved… it was amazing. “Ohhhh Stefan… I think I want you to do the nasty in my taxi!” yelled Anthony. “I AM THE BEAST YOU WORSHIP” replied MC Ride as he took Anthony’s cock out of his mouth. Anthony bent over on the couch, and got on his knees. Ride undid his all-black jeans, and revealed his lengthy penis. He started to put his throbbing penis into Anthony’s butt, when all of a sudden, “IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES YUUHHHH!!!!!” “Oh my God!!” screamed Anthony. “You get-get-get-get got-got-got-got it in!” MC Ride wasn’t a tender lover. He pumped and pumped until finally, in euphoria, he came inside of Anthony’s butt. He withdrew, exhausted, and laid down next to Anthony, who had reached orgasm as well. “H-how was it?” Asked Stefan. “you’re good…” Whispered Anthony. Whispered Anthony. “I liked your lovemaking. I would give you a strong six, light seven.”

I think Lemonade is a pretty good example of "fake deep," or at least the video direction for that project. The aesthetics are almost an exact rip-off of a 1960s art film that it does not credit, and it just seems like it uses lots of pan-African imagery for the same reason Christian stuff shows up in anime: because someone thought the symbolism was "so deep" and cool looking.
I think X's music is deep on a philosophical and conceptual level if you're in grade school or high school, so that is to say, not very deep. As a matter of sophistry, it is pretty "deep". Many of his songs are incredibly personal and vulnerable, so I can appreciate the depth of his music in that regard. I'm certainly not listening to X to gain a deeper understanding of politics, history, or self-development, I listen to it to enjoy his experience and point of view-- his music is a case study of himself and his circumstances. I do not think he's had the development of character, knowledge, or practice to be able to write something politically or conceptually deep, I think at the time he was simply incapable of it-- for example he never really came to terms with his actions, the best we got were vague gestures of sagacity, humility, and generosity, which could not be said to be performed or provided without some intention of self-preservation. No amount of charity or number of airy platitudes had ever truly absolved him of his hideous behaviors and actions; he never faced trial and had to face the serious consequences of his actions, because the justice system was either incredibly lenient due to him being a minor as well as growing celebrity status, and because he had died too early to proceed with his trial. At most he's only ever touched base with his demons.
Completely disagree with this one. First, if 'deep' is knowledge that spurs epiphanies and helps somebody grow and develop as a person, what is considered 'deep' is determined by how developed a person is. You might have a far greater understanding of the world than somebody else, but if you're comparing yourself to a bunch of kids that haven't had as much exposure to the world of course you'd see it as monotonous. By the time fan bases you're criticizing get on the level you're at right now, you'll be even more developed and they'll still seem redundant. Everybody's not on the same level at the same time, but by discrediting the artists that help them get to a higher level of understanding you'll make artists less incentivised to even try.
What a bunch of convoluted crap. So just because some people lack character/intelligence that automatically makes shallow art deep? No, absolute garbage.
I don't really care if you cry On the real, you shoulda never lied Shoulda saw the way she looked me in my eyes She said: "Baby, I am not afraid to die." Push me to the edge All my friends are dead Push me to the edge All my friends are dead Push me to the edge All my friends are dead
Again, mad props for wearing another Death shirt (Symbolic album? I can't tell from here) If you're a fan of metal, I highly recommend listening to Death. Start with Scream Bloody Gore and keep going! My favorite album is Spiritual Healing. Guitar work is phenomenal. R.I.P. Chuck...
I think there is an important distinction between being deep and being meaningful. Ik it sounds contradictory but when I think deep I think of voting beyond normal statements and assumptions made by society on a topic, where as meaningful is more of talking about something which you believe as important rather but not necessarily giving groundbreaking insight
"Fake deep" is just the actual definition of "pretentious," but people who are themselves pretentious have all but turned that word into a cudgel against anything with a smidgen of conceptual ambition or polysemy.
6:11 Nailed it there Anthony, too many people who dislike this current generation of artists (everything they put out) lack the brain capability to simply do that. Let alone deep rap.
Fake deep is a phrase used by pretentious college students who think they are the epitome of intelligence because they parrot Neitzche's thoughts when ever somebody who is supposed to be stupid says something thoughtful. Not to say there aren't artists who say stupid shit when they are trying to be deep, Hopsin is a great example at that, but for the most part this is a case of elitist arrogance. The same type of people that claim they are against racism, classism and bigotry but treat anybody who comes from a different culture with a lesser education like they are less than human.
so i watched this video of how to pronounce xxxtentacion and i made a joke of "its pronounced xxxtrash" and now i have this 14 yo that keeps annoying me saying he super deep and that he can relate so much to his music...
I think the idea of fake deep ultimately boils down to a lack of original analysis. In the example of the new XXX video, he provides imagery and lyrics that would not require his own independent thought on the matter to make. “Real” depth comes from analysing the subject and presenting the thoughts and feelings you have on the subject in a 3D manner. That is to say that I don’t believe that the imagery and (in particular) the lyricism should get 100% of the message across the first time you watch it. True depth for me requires multiple viewings/readings for further understanding and that ultimately still leaves a level of ambiguity remaining. It could be thought of as a physical depth. - Surface level statements - analysis - subtle analysis (that perhaps makes reference to other sections/ideas raised) - ambiguous analysis (open to interpretation)
Most Dragonforce songs have more depth than most hip songs nowadays. And tbh the bar has lowered an absolute fuck ton. All you have to do is basically say I'm depressed and I wanna die or go on about drugs in a roundabout way and 15 year olds and mid 20's hipsters will lap it up and go on about how deep it is.
I considered AAB to be fake deep as he was just repeating a similar message through each track without any sense of creativity. Literally hammered it into my skull
*Starter pack* of current hip hop that is actually "deep"... Who would you add? - Run the Jewels - Open Mike Eagle - The Roots - Joey Bada$$ - Kendrick - Vince Staples - Rapsody - Shad Honorary mentions: - Lupe - Mick Jenkins - Denzel Curry - Underachievers - Cole - Jay Z - Common - ATCQ
So can we get a list of artists who are actually "deep" and which of their works provoke the most thought and why it is deeper than XXX, Hopsin and J Cole?
Fake Deep is definitely a thing but it all comes with the language and the appearance and the cadence. The reason why xxx and Hopsin are called fake deep is because of those things. xxx looks like an emo kid and the way he talks makes him sound like that he's "trying so hard to be intellectual".. when he's just hitting the surface level. And with Hopsin, he has those contacts.. still! And you know because he wanna look like an outsider and it would complete his message with the music. The "actual deep" guys, like Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, even Drake sometimes, go deep in a way that comes from a sincere place. With their language and how they say it, you can actually hear some pain coming out. It's all about execution and what you choose to say/how to say it.
Primarily the people who think X is deep are high school kids and young adults. When you're in high school anything edgy, dark, and/or violent is deep and avant-garde to you, cause you're filled with angst and anger and confusion about life. I think once you hit your 20s or figure out what and who you are that edginess leaves you for the most part.
Hopsin is pretty much the definition of "fake deep". I mean, what the fuck did he mean with this garbage? "Heavy thin air, sahara mascara smeared, end of an era Tracks on Hera's peacock thighs, china white skies, ivory of my leper eyes"
Luis Eduardo Veloz X isn't fake deep and doesn't try to be. The only example of him being fake deep is the Look at me video. He's not trying to make his music profound, he's trying to make it personal.
As much as I love Hip-hop music even some of the 'conscious rappers' out there never go beyond surface level. They point out something obvious like 'police brutality exists in America, police target minorities' and everyone thinks they're woke or fresh for pointing that out. Conscious hip-hop can be great but people love to hype it up way too much.
Real niggas know reality is the tip of an iceberg of irrationality that we've managed to drag ourselves up onto for a few panting moments before we slip back into the sea of the unreal.
How deep something is depends on how you interpret it. I could say I Am The Walrus is fake deep while another person could say "no, dude, that shit is deep af, bro". The truth is if a song is metaphorical it is open to interpretation, which means how deep it is depends on what meaning you give it. If a song isn't metaphorical it is just a story. Stories are fact. Fact is not deep. However, a story could be an analogy or contain metaphors, giving it depth. While it's true that some songs pretend to make very transcendental statements, I would never use the term "fake deep". A lyric can hit you in the right place depending on context and what you've experienced. The depth is given by the artist's background and what he was trying to convey in that moment. If you say "fake deep" you are just trying to make yourself appear deeper by disregarding someone's lyrics. That being said, I don't like Hopsin.

By the time fan bases you're criticizing get on the level you're at right now, you'll be even more developed and they'll still seem redundant. Everybody's not on the same level at the same time, but by discrediting the artists that help them get to a higher level of understanding you'll make artists less incentivised to even try.
BROLLYKURISAKI I can spell the names in your username right and you can't
Scaleatin Boneyoho it's because those people are the lowest common denominator. It's a low bar and robs the actual respect real brilliance deserves
What a bunch of convoluted crap. So just because some people lack character/intelligence that automatically makes shallow art deep? No, absolute garbage.
@@markb9907 Well, all art is subjective. To those who you may consider deep or impactful may not be the same as I, or anyone else does.
God I fucking hate unskippable ads

Fake Depth = A term used by the pretentious who think they're deeper than others.
Joyner Lucas is fake deep

High School Deep is probably a better term. Most of us are like this as teenagers.
J Cole is the epitome of fake-deepness
*In b4 white and hispanic teenage girls start raging*
And Logic

ConvincingPeople Nice trying to tell people who call out bullshit pretentious while you yourself are being pretentious lol
Oxymorons are only good with oxycontin
ConvincingPeople "yeah whatevs"
Nah shit be corny and stupid. Not profound or deep.. ppl flock to allat of bullshit

Yeah uhhh,
This just isn't true.

Logic is the fake deep champ
so i watched this video of how to pronounce xxxtentacion and i made a joke of "its pronounced xxxtrash" and now i have this 14 yo that keeps annoying me saying he super deep and that he can relate so much to his music...
Well if all you listen to is future/Lil uzi type artists of course artists like X seem deep.
Evan Burgener "splishy splashy so gushy" is deep asf fuck u mean
Future has some deep songs perkys callin is deep
SEE ex if only i know whats he's saying. Future is just a missed oppurtunity with beats
- Surface level statements
- analysis
- subtle analysis (that perhaps makes reference to other sections/ideas raised)
- ambiguous analysis (open to interpretation)
Ironic that there was an add for Popeyes when Melon is a vegan...
Hopsin has been getting better imo, he has some good stuff on the way
I considered AAB to be fake deep as he was just repeating a similar message through each track without any sense of creativity. Literally hammered it into my skull
1800 by logic isn't dope

i thought that that mustache was fake. It is not, unfortunately.
Rick and Morty is probably the quintessential "Fake Deep" show.
Compared to an actually deep surrealist meta-physical show like Xavier Renegade Angel
Rootin for Lenin Rick and Morty doesn't even claim to be deep it's the stupid half of the fans saying that lmao
Excellent point on the over abundance of commercial, fun, ignorant music making it easy for someone to look deep simply by mentioning social issues.
Do 'I Hate Mars Bars'.
Back in my day, if you were "fake deep" you were just called a poser.

Did the man who invented college go to college?

Never thought i'd see the day melon acknowledged even the slightest anything that had to do with Hopsin.

Ab Soul.
So can we get a list of artists who are actually "deep" and which of their works provoke the most thought and why it is deeper than XXX, Hopsin and J Cole?
Jesus I just realized what that background was hahahaha.
Only a few artists who are "deep" gain mainstream success.
Fake deep gets you 1000 clout tokens
How many roads must a man walk down, before you call him a melon.
It's all about execution and what you choose to say/how to say it.
use a different type of english to get your point and maybe I'll listen
Justo Blando Kendrick? Deep? Lmao
Xan Master Pump >>> Xxxfakedeepnacion
Hopsin sees himself as a prophetic, philosophical rapper when he's really the David Wolfe of hip hop.
almost as bad as fake woke
Real ninjas remember the Kodak Black "Tunnel Vision" video then dip.
review the new tommy genesis single
Hopsin is the only living legend to ever actually exist.
confirmed: to pimp a butterfly played backwards is fake deep
Hopsin is pretty much the definition of "fake deep". I mean, what the fuck did he mean with this garbage?
"Heavy thin air, sahara mascara smeared, end of an era
Tracks on Hera's peacock thighs, china white skies, ivory of my leper eyes"
All-Amerikkkan Badass was the definition of fake deep in my opinion. No idea why you rated it so high.
pyril I completely agree
pyril Because It was well made and sounded good. And what its fake-deepness doesn't completely define it like Hopsin or X.
Uzi vert is fake deep
that was the exact thought i had right before i clicked "view reply"
people analyzing XO Tour life are so funny
Paul George have you not seen uzi's interviews
bryan cuevas he's never deep lmao wym? He just expresses his emotions in his songs on
Logic certainly applies to this "fake deep category"
Kendrick Lamar is fake deep
“Fuck murderers. Murder is bad.”
Hopsins most deep song is FLY like if u agre XDD
Fake deep would be a great name for a mainstream pop band

If I didn't read the title, I'd of assumed this was a Kendrick Lamar review.
