The Advance Variation is the most precise way for white to fight the Caro-Kann Defense, but it's also an extremely solid position for black, who creates a pawn triangle in the center and resolves the problem of „the bad bishop“.

Caro-Kann Defense, B12 Advance Variation - Chess Openings for Tournament Players
The advance variation became the most popular way for white to fight the Caro-Kann, it even surpassed the main lines which occur after 3.Nc3 for white. White simply advances his e pawn, gaining central space and getting more room for maneuvering. In exchange, black is able to play Bf5 fast, getting rid of his potentially worst piece, and he can then close down his pawn triangle with e6. Black thus has a perfectly solid central structure and white gets more space in exchange.
There are many approaches to the Advance Caro-Kann for white (and white gets to choose the variation on move 4). Here are the most common lines:
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 - Short Variation (the positional approach for white, simply developing, castling short and using the space advantage later on)
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 - Van der Wiel Attack (a very aggressive line for white, black is sacrificing his h5 pawn in exchange for some queenside initiative but both sides have great attacking chances)

Every time my opening gets crushed with some new variation I come back here and you always provide thorough summaries and good references for where to get more information. just a side note: for those who like me plays 3. ... c5 in response to advance variation it would be helpful to look at GM Igor Khenkin games. He scored very good in this variation. Someday maybe I will learn the main line with Bf5 but it seems to me to be very theoretical heavy.
Thanks for the imput! I think the Bf5 main line is heavy in theory, but it's much more comfortable to play than c5. I will check out Khenkin's games:)

A great great great video! Not only a list of moves and variations but full of explanations of plans, ideas and reasons WHY one side play this move. Keep on doing like this. On chess24 I have looked into a video series of the Caro-Kann that is much more detailed but it just is a list of moves and possible moves and I never will remember this. But by your video I have understood the problems and advantages of the variations and these I can remember in my matches. So I am able to maybe find my own way continuing the match even if I have forgotten the right continuation... Great Job!

Amazing video! The 4.c4 sideline you mention though is nowhere near as uncomfortable and I think easy to play if you play 5.Bb4, because like you said you gotta start thinking about that bishop if white is threatening of locking it out. 5Ke7 looks a bit masochistic ahah. Thanks again!

Exactly what I needed. Just played a game against the advance short variation and my follow-up wasn't great. Had no room to operate. Won, but I shouldn't have. Now I know how to turn it to my advantage.

c4 as the sidelines are really improving the game and the perception of the opening.
One thing that I would like to mention is that tough it is very good to exchange the light squared bichop on move four, black looses a king defender, so it's important to place a knight close to him and perhaps a bichop on f8 so we won't get mated.

how do you only have 3.3k subs? you have so much really good in depth content and its organized nicely in playlists. I don't get it. The only thing I can note is your accent is pretty thick and normally people don't like to listen to a thick accent for so long. But that doesn't explain only 3.3k on such a good channel.
That's what i've found in an old greek chess book(1967).It's from the White's point of view:4.c4 e6 5.Nbc3 dxc4 6.Bxc4 Nge7 7.Nge2 Nbd7 8.0-0 Ndb6 9.Bb3 Qd7 10.a4 (in order to prevent Black's Quineside castling)10...a5 11.Neg3 Bg6 with the White intending f4 & f5

First of all : Thank you for the introduction. I'm now using the Caro-Kann-Defense as my main weapon with black an even analysed it , but isn't in the 3.c3-Variation or Botvinnik-Variation the bishop on b5 hanging , because of queen to a5+?
I've fallen for that too but white can play Nc3 blocking check and defending the bishop
According to the lichess opening explorer also 4. Nd2 seems to be quite popular on a top level (played by So, Navara or Caruana)
Against 4. Nd2 you can just play dxe4 and Nf6 and play like the Tartakower Caro Kann
What should black play if white plays a move like 6.c3 or 6.Nc3 at 5:00? Should it advance, take it, or what?

A question I have is: could you recommend a website or an app to use to study more challenging positions like the 4.c4 sideline with engine support? Thank you so much in advance. I hope both you and your family are alright. We haven't gotten a new video in almost 2 weeks ;).
Lichess and chessbase
What i play in that horrible line for white( 17:17 ) is Qa5+ and after that Qa4. If the queens are exchanged mating attacks aren't gonna happen and develops my knight. If they aren't exchanged then it's hard to castle kingside for white.
