GNX feels authentically West Coast because Kendrick was born in the last era when a rapper's sound was shaped directly by the region they grew up in. In contrast, Gen Z and Gen Alpha rappers are increasingly influenced by trending online sounds rather than regional ones.
I have to disagree with you the west coast for the most part has always stuck to its regional sounds that’s why people in other areas hate on the west coast music
Deidrick ain't making nun great again needed the drake snake stimulus+George Floyd stimulus😂✌️no one bumping this corny hospice west coast sound without em💀
The Trap wave was like a wrecking ball to regional creativity, not just domestically but internationally too. You’ll be on vacation in Greece 🇬🇷 and hear a song by a local rapper that’s a carbon copy of an Atlanta melodic Trap song. Social media made the world really small.
Luther and 30 for 30 are opening doors for everyone moving forward R&B, not in the old way with feature bars in between lyrics but, rappers singing and rapping like our new R&B Keni did.
Coulda kept this one in the drafts my man. We need to move past “Make ____ Great Again” shit was always based in bigotry and parroting it was and always has been corny.
Remembering that trap run, I really admire Kendrick for resisting the trap pull for a majority of his catalogue. He only had a couple songs that leaned into the trap sound but mostly stuck to his own thing and still did really well.
Well we know that the beef basically pulled the plug on that industry trap sound and clout rap so now the industry is resetting itself. We also have Tyler the creator with his new album, central cee, jid etc.
It would interesting to see if artists will start to benefit from using their own sounds in 2025. Cause even after the beef some of the west coast artists like Ab soul, Yg, Roddy Rich, and Mustards albums flopped even with leaning into the west coast sound and using the beef to fuel their hype. I think the only one that’s gonna really benefit from this is Kendrick in all honesty.
As a hiphop fan, the weight of this era of hiphop is super important. There's always going to be reasons for people to fight back with true artistic movements. I think this is a modern Renaissance movement. The impact will be felt universally.
As a white boy who's more into EDM and was around when dubstep and Skrillex were at the height of their popularity, can confirm that the next logical step was to incorporate hip hop into it and "trap" as a distinct EDM genre became big around 2013-ish, producers like RL Grime, Flosstradaumus, and of course Bauuer, I know we all remember Harlem Shake. Early to mid 2010's was absolutely dominated by that southern ATL hip hop sound. And of course the king of that era: "Turn Down for What".
It wasn’t until trap queen came out that this sound really started dominating. Regional and even deeper individual sounds were still so different from artist to artist from 2009-2014. I kind of disagree with you about the 2000s because that bling bling sound was dominant, not like atl trap from 2015-2024 but still the number one sound by far.
He has to be young. Because he said trap started in 2010s 😂 when future just took Wayne style. But trap was already there in the 2000s future just used his regional sound. Now young ppl say it’s future when it’s actually Wayne. Ti,jeezy was all making trap music in the early 2000s. It got less original in the 2010s because even New York and jersey was sounding like Atl. So how was the 2010s the most original. That’s when originally started to disappear
Only pushback I'll give is that Trap takeover started late-mid 2000s around 06-07. The different regions tried to fight it & still ride with their own sound but eventually caved & started sounding like Atlanta. Granted Trap was a little different then with the more aggressive synths but u could slowly see NY niggss & other areas try to bend to that sound lol
I almost agreed with this video except the Chicago drill sound was directly influenced by Waka Flocka, Chief Keef said this himself. Go listen to Keef first album and then go listen to “playin wit a check” by Waka flocka and it’s literally just different versions of that song lmao
This is why I love being from the DMV, we’ve always kept our regional sound and have never really bent down to the trap sound, there’s a big gate keeping culture here when it comes to music, and this is also why I feel like our sound has never been really mainstream and rappers from here never really break out due to them not conforming. Great video as always 🙏
I disagree that it’s the most West Coast sounding album . All his albums sound West coast because he’s from the “West Coast” TPAB is super funky ! Is that not west coast ? GKMC has Dr. Dre production, is that not West Coast? Now what I can say is it’s the most club appropriate sound , the most dance worthy style of production. Even all his dis tracks are West Coast production ie sounwave and the alchemist.
Chill yungin if you was around for 90s rap music you wouldn’t have said a lot of what u said in this video. I can tell u wasn’t around when Em was doing crazy numbers. U wasn’t around when Hov was running shit in the late late 90s and early 2000s. And I can’t forget 50 cause his time was crazy too and also Weezy had his time as well. But I get it u can only judge based on what u experience so u think what the ATL rappers in 2010s were doing was something special lol. Eminem’s Marshall Matters LP sold over 10 million copies in 2000 for the record. Honestly most of the 2010s rappers were mini Waynes only issues is they couldn’t rap like him lol but they definitely bite his style in terms of looks. I almost forgot Kanye. Now I just named like 4 rappers that are legitimately goats from the same era
15:21 ngl all I can think of when you say 2 years ago is it looks like lil baby 😭ruined it to you because he was that last big ATL rapper to really drop that year after we had future and 21 savage (with drake)
Trap sound was around in the early 2000s. Not the 2010s 😂😂 ppl didn’t start biting it all over until the 2010s. Ti literally has an album called trap music in like 02. Wayne got auto tune from T pain. And future just brought the auto tune back. After it faded none of this stuff is new. Future is from the Wayne tree. Thug all these guys y’all think are original and started something they didn’t
This the same thing ppl was saying in the northeast when the south was trying to break into the market 😂niggaz was rejected for yrs. My cousin was saying the south about to blow since the early 90s. It took over 10 yrs for the south to blow up. That’s from the late 70s to the 2000s for the south to really explode. Wayne,ti,Luda is who really got the south going commercially and accepted in all regions. Kendrick is doing the same with the west again because they already blow up before. It only takes 1 global star to bring in a sound. And the labels will try to find the next artist from that region. It’s how it always worked in hip hop. You’re just young and only know hip hop sounding 1 way.
