RESURRECTION F EXPLAINED (Dragon Ball Super) : 📖

Many years post the events of Goku's epic battle on Namek, we witness Frieza in Earths Hell being serenated by Teddy Bears. Simultaneously in the vacuum of space, Frieza's henchmen "Sorbet" searches the universe, looking for a means of bringing Frieza back to life. Meanwhile on Beerus' Planet, Goku and Vegeta are continuing their training to build up their strength, and on Earth, Sorbet and the Frieza Force have arrived and made a wish on the Dragon Balls. Frieza is brought back to the world of the living, but this time with a vendetta against Goku AND Future Trunks. Opting to spend the next 4 months training so he'll never be dethroned again, Frieza finds himself reaching new heights that he'd never thought possible. In an effort to reclaim his rightful place as the Universes ruler, Frieza makes his way to Earth with over 1000 men, poised for a full scale invasion. Piccolo, Krillin, Gohan and the others are largely outnumbered, but a greater threat looms; Frieza's overwhelming new level of power. It's not long before Earths defenders are quickly overwhelmed, leaving Goku and Vegeta to return to Earth to settle the score once again.

I feel like things have evolved from people not liking Toriyama being disrespected (which is totally fair) to people not tolerating criticism of his work in any way and using his death as a shield. I personally find this (the people using his death as a shield part, not talking about you criticizing the movie) more disrespectful toward Toriyama. Don't use his name as a shield, that's gross.

I love how Gohan's character arc has stayed the same ever since the Cell saga: Gohan stops training -> New bad guy shows up and folds him -> Gohan starts training again -> rinse and repeat.

Vegeta deserved to kill Frieza

Frieza saying that he had never trained in his life is a complete contradiction, as it was stated by Frieza during his fight against Goku in the Frieza saga of DBZ that he hadn’t dusted himself off in a fight since he was a child training with his father.

That's what I was gonna comment, Whis as an angel has to be a neutral party. Allowing Goku to go back in time to kill Frieza is *very* clearly taking sides. Why is he allowed to do this consequence free and moreover, why didn't they just let Vegeta kill Frieza.
Sage has some good points. 😂 Now I was gonna keep the portion of the video when I mentioned Whis not being allowed to tamper with Mortal affairs. However, when I went back to read, Whis mentioned that FIGHTING was the only thing that would get them erased for good.

2:48 What's really funny is that due to Piccolo's ability to make clothes on command, there is no way to justify him being in that outfit. Piccolo could easily put him in any Gi he wants but doesn't because the movie really wants to show him in this outfit.
Piccolo was so disappointing in super, hopefully in the future chapters we get more of him actually being an intelligent fighter

My main issues with the movie are Gohan and why was Frieza resurrected? Hell even his second in command wanting revenge would’ve been a better choice, or a movie villain being made canon.

What trips me out with the transformation scenes is that Frieza’s transformation was much more dramatic with the camera angles and music than both Goku and Vegeta’s SSB transformation scenes like I know the movie is called Ressurection F but the way they downplayed Blue’s introduction showed that it wasn’t gonna be an impressive form from the jump. This movie was so all over the place that even the manga didn’t include it in the volume collection (I know there was a promotional manga but it’s hard to find and isn’t included in the actual DBS manga TL 😂)
Lol imo the manga is typically better than the anime. Maybe if this was adapted like the rest it would have been better there.

This movie’s biggest problem to me is dragon ball supers horrendous power scaling. Going based on how piccolo was struggling with freizas men, the AVERAGE soldier would have to be as strong as semi perfect cell AT LEAST and that argument only works if you say piccolo hasn’t gotten any stronger AT ALL since the cell games

Honestly fair criticism especially the power levels being completely skewed especially when comparing rusty gohan and piccolo who was likely above super perfect cell
I feel like Frieza's short term training hurts massively when his new form and the tremendous amount of time for training he had when looking at the manga. When Frieza in a 3rd of a year can close the gap of multiple years of training and strong opponents, what the hell is anyone going to do to stop him now. I see it as impossible and their going to need some damn good writing to convince me otherwise. Overall, I'm getting real sick of this "prodigy" nonsense.
I think it needs to be stated at how bewildering Frieza going from his "first form" to his "final form" in an instant is...
Frieza's transformations _aren't like_ other transformations in the series. it's not simply that his hair is turning a new color and he gets stronger; his body is physically altering in some _very drastic ways._
Secondly; Frieza's transformations are actually _reversed._ What colloquially is known as his "first form" is actually his _final form,_ where as what we know as his "final form" is actually his _original form._
Frieza's species transform their bodies in such a way that it not only disguises them, but also inhibits their power. In a way, Frieza's Transformations 1-3 are his species' equivalent of wearing _weighted armor,_ and his _final form_ is when the armor is completely off.
Basically, considering how drastic his body changes between forms 1-3, I'd say that jumping right from 1 to 4, should have resulted in the equivalent of pulling a muscle.
This movie was written by a committee. I guarantee you if Toriyama was allowed to work and write like he usually did this movie wouldve been way better if not completely different.

Thanks for this. I have nothing else to really add. You covered everything. I pretty much said everything you said word for word when this movie released and was attacked relentlessly. Called a hater among many other colorful insults. This movie and the power scaling make no sense. I love DB as much as the next guy but its like when we get new content so many are so happy to eat it up they disregard the inconsistencies or dismiss it entirely. This movie was straight up doo doo. 3/10

Well if we talkin about EVERYTHING wrong with RoF we gotta talk about the visuals.
Most fans know about the man Tadayoshi Yamamuro, a DB Veteran animator and supervisor who worked on the entirety of the original run. He’s been the character designer for all of Modern Dragon Ball aside from the last 2 movies, and his style has obviously degraded since 1997 (the end of GT).
He decided to storyboard, direct, and supervise all of the animation in the film on top of his role as Character Designer. This resulted in him redrawing all of the 2D animation in the film, greenlighting the CGI, framing every shot, and choreographing every fight. This resulted in 80% of the movie not looking bad, but by-the-books stock work. The character designs themselves were also a step down from the 90s, and since production companies like Bandai wanted to sell merch, Super debuted the same year.
TLDR: RoF’s visuals were also plain and boring, so it not only wounded Super’s narrative, but sent it on the visual roller-coaster we all witnessed throughout its run. This movie did nearly irreversible damage to Dragon Ball as a franchise, and that’s what makes me hate it more than any other canon DB film.
It's crazy how much better Frieza's characterization is in the TOP and after compared to Resurrection F.
I know Frieza was always short-sighted, impulsive and awful to his soldiers, but he's so stupid in this movie. He kills his few remaining soldiers for no reason, goes to Earth before learning how to use his new form then throws a tantrum and dies.

I love Frieza, he is my favorite villain by far in DB but using him again is just so boring, he doesn't have the same charm, TOP Frieza was leagues above this one. This arc is honestly the one I dislike the most in DB, even counting some of GT arcs, it's honestly lazy and nothing it adds to the franchise is really memorable for me.
Gohan was actually doing better in the movie than the anime
Vegeta should have had the "W" at the end and kill Frieza, instead of Frieza pulling that slick move that ended up destroying earth.
This move should've been like Super Hero where it focuses on the other Z Fighters as Goku and Vegeta train on Beerus' planet. The jump in Frieza's power would've been MUCH more realistic and it would've given the other Z Fighters a moment to shine while still given them a reason to train. SSB should've been introduced much later on (Goku Black for Goku and ToP for Vegeta) and Golden Frieza should've, if it had to exist, also been introduced in the ToP to give him another realistic jump in power because the canon reason is that literal image training gave him the jump, which is just stupid. This movie also incredibly mischaracterizes Frieza as he NEVER killed/hurt his own men in the manga. Toei DID make this stuff though, so go figure.
TLDR: Frieza should've only jumped around Buu Saga levels of power here and all the RoF transformations should've been introduced much later on. Basically all of these problems come from Toriyama writing a decently lazy script and Toei not understanding ANYTHING about the series as they usually do.
We need a super hero type film for the human fighters like a transformation only for humans based on god ki

The way I personally sum up this disaster of a film:
1. Conceptually flawed - why are we seeing Frieza again?
2. Frieza's way too strong
3. On guard or not, Goku's strongest form should not be losing to that laser
4. Vegeta gets the chance to kill Frieza for good (amazing wrap up for his character considering the speech he gave to Goku about Frieza on Namek) BUT GETS ROBBED OF IT
5. The WAY Vegeta gets robbed and it's implications for the future - Whis conveniently can turn back time, robbing future threats of any tension. They're also not supposed to intervene but here we are
1. For marketing since if they threw a new villain each time it would get kinda old if they had no idea how to make the new villain impactful
2. Actually that one I cant say much on lol yea blue goku should've beat the absolute shit out of golden frieza hands down
3. Yes vegeta was robbed of that W so this one I also cannot say much on
4. Again I cant say much other then the staff of the series has to always have the mc getting the W's so... yea

The other points I forgot about goku losing to a beam and the whole "whis and beerus should not intervene in this affair" as stupid as it is... it's been shown time and time again in the series that goku being off guard (which its dumb plz dont come at me for this blame the staff) apparently is the only way to beat him whether to actually hurt him or kill him
As for the other lol its very simple beerus and whis did this "favor" for their own selfish reasons cus think about it they cant have delicious earth food if there is no earth right?

Resurrection of Dragon Ball as Dragon Ball Super was a big mistake. Battle of the Gods brought DBZ back, and it was amazing, then they dropped the ball in an embarrassing way.

This is what began a *LOT* of people (mine included)'s hatred for Goku. The story just started going full out of its way to spoil and cater to him in *Asinine* ways. The entire climax was his fault and somehow he deserves *ALL THE* Praise? Vegeta was robbed just to teach Goku a lesson he'll *NEVER* ever learn or remember.
And he only gets worse from here.
Resurrection F has its flaws as a movie but it's good and it was a good introduction to super Saiyan god super Saiyan

Good thing the movie isn’t canon. The anime is. It wasn’t much better but it vastly improved upon a ton of these issues.
Flawed as it is I love the movie. I love the idea of reviving my favorite DB villain and the fact that his minions were successful for a change. As much as I despise the Saiyan prince, want him to die already and never return I think he should have gotten the kill on Freeza. BTW I think that without a doubt Chaozu would have fought well against the soldiers. No matter how much Freeza trained his men they still shouldn't be a match even for Chaozu. I wanted Yamucha there and for him to use the Sokidan which has been a while.
It's a Good thing that DBS Improved the Writing much better and makes way more Sense than the "Resurrection F" Movie.

Frieza getting as strong as he did was because he's a mutant. The potential was always there, he just never tapped into it because he never needed to.
But in retrospect, on Namek, Frieza was extremely disabled and weak for someone of his race. Not that it mattered as he was the strongest in the universe. But because it never mattered, he was never concerned over it.

I'm pretty sure that Vegeta died from suffocating in the vacuum of space, not the planet exploding. Whis literally said that the reason Frieza survived was because he could breathe in space, meaning Vegeta died from suffocating.

13:13 We can't apply this to only Goku. Whis mentioned Vegeta's weakness which is that he's so wound up that his reaction time suffers at key moments. This is as much Vegeta's fault as it is Goku's. Vegeta had plenty of time to kill Freeza before he blew up the Earth but instead, he posed over him and threw a badass line. Goku deserves some criticism but Vegeta just as much.

This is the thing that always bummed me out about DBZ in general. The side characters get side lined like crazy. I think this movie would have been cool is the supporting cast had their moment to shine, but it feels like everyone is just randomly incompetent.
I don't care what anyone says, everything after Goku getting Frieza on his knees is certified trash. Goku, in SSB and looking down on Frieza in no way should be so off guard that he gets shot, Frieza trying to appeal to Vegeta even though he hates him more than anyone is stupid, and the time shenanigans as a whole is an awful ending for multiple obvious reasons. That isn't even mentioning how weak this movie makes all the Z Fighters look. Everyone there should dwarf Zarbon and Dodoria in power but here even Piccolo is struggling. I *like* family man Gohan but not not being certain you can go Super Saiyan *1* when I could ask Goten and he could probably do it on command is embarrassing.

honestly as a standalone movie in it self i thought it was a fine movie now connecting to dragon ball super animated series as a whole yeah that felt like a bad idea and mostly made no sense to connect this story to the series as a whole because well nothing changed to make the story better but that's just my opinion.
If there’s anything about DB that I hate, it’s the fact that people DON’T STAY DEAD. Nearly every villain comes back whether it’s as a good guy, or just back to fight again. It gets ridiculous and pretty stale. There was absolutely no reason for Frieza to come back

I can understand the faults of ressurection F tbh but again it wasnt supposed to be something so huge cus only notable things about it was frieza returning to get a new form (which the audience didnt think was possible) and goku and vegeta getting new forms with their god powers as well (despite in the super anime.... blue doesnt do much to actually give them any major W's)
Gohan’s current power in the manga is absolute bullshit asspull, so tbh he didn’t redeem anything. Moro arc redeemed him tho, so ig that counts.

Jesus christ this movie was dangerously ass, for christ's sake they didn't even bother making the z-fighters look like any kind of comp to frieza, They turned my boy piccolo to a fraud, Gohan into a candy ass, Tien into a bum and yamcha, goten and trunks into ghosts, devious work. Not even mentioning how ssjb and golden frieza are. Robbing vegeta of his limp dick win against the man that enslaved his people. What's crazy is that with a few tweaks, it could have some rewatch value. Get rid of Ssjb. Don't have the lesson be "you let your guard down" have it be "Learn to fight different kinds of opponents". Have frieza do something crafty like a technique or tech that restricts goku and vegeta's power, or everyone for that matter so the nerfing is at least justified. Let master roshi chill at home and bring in Goten, Trunks and Yamcha. Have the training be more than 4 months and with a new set of dragon balls because it makes no sense for earth to be caught lacking THIS hard. You can still have Golden be his pinnacle, just don't make it on par with ssjg, have an ssjg go ssj as in, keep the red hair but it spikes up like regular ssj and save blue as a teaser for something else Give vegeta his damn win and if you really need goku to lose then have lose because he wasn't ready for frieza's snake tactics or make cooler cannon or something. Do something to let Vegeta get his win, just a few tweaks and this movie goes from ass to watchable. No hate to the akira or anyone who contributed to this film, but it's just not good. I'm curious as to how you would fix this movie, or other bad things/explanations in dragon ball.

It has its flaws, but id argue the poor execution of Captain Ginyu's return was one of the worst moments in dbs.
Ginyu is one of my favourite characters, hes always been a fun antagonist to work with. Reduced to a ball joke. At least Vegeta caught a W here.

Captain Ginyu returning definitely wasn’t necessary at all. I WAS happy Vegeta got to finally end every member of the Ginyu Force tho.
I really don't get how that laser worked. Even at Frieza's lowest of lows, he's still multi-planetary. Goku should be well aware of this, being able to sense his ki and all. How much was he holding back for that laser to work? Frieza was also clowning Goku for losing to something so weak, so we know those lasers aren't some universal+ weapon.
The fact that Frieza himself pointed that out made me so mad lol
