My dad enjoyed Charles Gordin’s visits to David Letterman. He really liked that he understood how Charles was putting on an act and how sometimes the audience didn’t seem to get the joke. I’m thankful my dad brought me in on the joke too! I was always so excited to see Charles Grodin spar with David. Mr. Grodin will be missed.
IDK if anyone could be more sarcastic while being subdued, low key and droll like Grodin.
I love how when David counters, Charles is able to swallow his laugh. Then he covnerts his laugh into a smile to keep the illusion of tension going.
This is a master class in how to do deadpan improvisational comedy.
💯💯💯❗️
Watching Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Craig Fergusson late shows are the best here in youtube.
Grodin is always hilarious! His dry humor is timeless.
I absolutely love Charles Grodin, man with so much talent and great humor. Rest in peace Charles..🌹❤
Grodin's appearances on this show were truly must-see TV.
Even as a 10 year old, I knew to stick around for the grodin segment!!!
I remember watching one of his appearances on Letterman as a kid and wondering why he’s so mean while my dad was crying with laughter. Charles Grodins deadpan humor is just perfect. And never once cracked a smile while keeping up the act.
I was watching these just for the pleasure of Grodin's comedy. Now, I find he has passed away. Now it feels like a tribute.
I was astonished to find a copy of It Would Be So Nice If You Weren't Here in my hotel room nightstand.
🤣😂🤣
I really appreciate you uploading this collection. Grodin and Martin Short are definitely my two favorite talk show guests
When Paul played the lawyer off, I absolutely lost it. Then to watch Dave laugh uncontrollably, made me laugh even harder. My goodness what a great moment that was!
Their chemistry is FANTASTIC!!!!
THANKS for the string of these...AMAZING!!!!!
Buddy, you're a hero for posting these clips. Thanks!!
The
Charles plugging Clifford in 1991 always reminds me that the movie was shelved for three years. RIP.
That first appearance was like something from The Larry Sanders Show
If you're up this late go our way has to be the greatest line in late night history hands down. Bloody brilliant.
What does this mean?
Thank goodness I was watching as a teenager. The show informs me to this day.
After Norm Macdonald I think Grodin is the best guest on Letterman. So cool to watch this humour.
Charles taken from us too early! (RIP 5-18-2021)
Thank you so much for these compilations.
I love Grodin's body language. He immediately crosses his leg away from Dave and stares at him. This really is a kind of extended performance art piece. World class sparring partners for each other.
Exactly. I love how instead of breaking he converts to the laugh to a smile, and pauses.
Everyone's fave grumpy bear of a man! R.I.P. Mr. Grodin, you're probably getting annoyed by Beethoven in heaven.
This was a time when late night TV mattered and was relevant.
No, it was great cause it's totally irrelevant.
@@AllanOstermann correct :)
12:42 One of my fav Grodin/Letterman interviews. Thanks so much for putting these together. : )
These are so funny. Charles and Dave are so great together. At the start taking about Albert Finny and Charles says that Dave treated him like “also Charles Grodin”. Just the quick wit of these two is phenomenal.
1:59:24 Love Grodin's grin after he said, "Now that's a host..." He cracked himself up a little....but I think the smile was also a kindness to Dave. All right...diving into Part 3 next.
Aw - I didn't know Grodin had passed. I loved his interaction with Letterman. RIP
Watching these while recuperating from knee surgery, it appears Letterman was way more entertaining at 12:30 than CBS at 11:30. Maybe because he was older and had to be more professional, corporate or less jocular. But he was way more entertaining than anyone else on the air now (or is that just me?) I know the writers have much input but Camera Night; hosting the show while waiting for cable; Jumpsuit night; watching a re-run.
Charles Grodin is the WWE of intellect.
Fake, rehearsed, and hard to watch? Not even !
Charles Grodin is incredible.
Yes he is.
100% It's sad how people are now so lacking in wit, they assume this is scripted/rehearsed.
I always loved this guy!
awesome!!
Getting into Part 2 here and I'm really feeling the similarities between Charles Grodin and Super Dave, especially when Super Dave was on Norm's podcast...affectionately hostile masters of the deadpan both of 'em. RIP
Good observation
very impressed that U had the Tom Synder etc stuff well placed. I appreciate your efforts a great deal .
These guys put the cool in cool
Yeoman's work, Donz. Respect. Faretheewell, Chuck Grodin.
Charles Grodin- The antagonist! ❤ 👼
"We have to go now-"
"Thank god."
I feel like Charles Grodin developed a character for when he was on talk shows
It's just the funniest routine ever. And they both know how funny it is.
"The Prince of Fame"
Grodin was so funny on this show and in movies, love his dry approach.
Omg. At 47:55 onward. Is the funniest scene ever on David Letterman show? I’m sitting here howling and I have replayed it now a dozen times.
Excellent edits, thanks Don. The added context from other interviews is great. "On TV, you can prick your finger, but you cant finger your prick."
Thank you don !!
He's so antagonistic... just like in Midnight Run.
RIPS 🙏🏾 good actor..
Charles is up there with Norm as an all time Letterman guest
This is the best. Thank you DON GILLER you lovely person (i assume(
💚 Very funny man.
Hey, Don. Can you tell us how many times Dabney Coleman was on the show? Ever thought of doing a collection of his appearances? Always liked him a lot.
Four appearances on Late Night, none on Late Show: December 6, 1982; May 31, 1983; October 1, 1987; and November 1, 1991. I first have to finish the Charles Grodin compilation, then decompress.
1:50:37 this might be the best Charles Grodin moment in all his Letterman appearances.
RIP 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Grodins act is hilarious!
39:15 caught me so off guard 😂
thank youuuuuu
Charles made some of my life. Seriously 😳.
At 1:45:20 Dave mentions the movie "Beethoven" and Paul reveals that The World's Most Dangerous Band recorded their cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" for the movie soundtrack, which is posted here: ruclips.net/video/WsxJA8nGxiQ/видео.html
I think this is hilarious !
Memories are fun.
He basically described Martin Shorts character on AD. 😶
I'll never forget "pony up the dough."
Does anyone know what song Charles comes out to at 1:26:22?
'The Prince Of Fame.'
As a huge Dave fan, I knew Grodin and Dave were working together on Grodin's appearances. They still made me cringe so hard that I couldn't watch them.
This is hilarious
The Grodians place the book in your hotel room
Kevin Nealon stole Grodin's act. This is how Nealon engages with Conan.
Always wondered Don, who is your favorite guest?
Impossible to answer.
@@dongiller top 5?
1:39:55 The movie clip was clipped out, but other videos of this same interview may still have that footage with a disclaimer.
Having had videos blocked for including film and television clips, I side on caution.
@@dongiller Understood. We'll never know what the YouTapo will do.
1:27:38 “No we’re not really here for clams”
Chevy Chase should have followed the steps of Charles Grodin, but he lacked the intellect. Because if you think of any Chevy Chase movie, you can simply replace him with Charles. On a side note, Charles on Letterman looks like a classier Don Rickles act.
There are people who think this is real. I never once thougt this was real. Its funny but people in the comments are just unbelievably dense.
1:07:04 - What song is the band playing?
James Brown - “Doin’ It to Death.”
@@dongiller I knew I'd heard that song before, but couldn't remember where. I need to pull out my copy of 'Pass the Peas'. Thank you for your (very prompt) answer and all of your uploads!
Thanks!
Can anyone recall the song at 19:00
Yardbirds - “Heart Full of Soul” (1965). Original recording here: ruclips.net/video/pM1qZBFiOLU/видео.html
@@dongiller thanks! Spent the last 10 minutes trying to place that opening riff paul played on the organ, the melody was familiar.
