I think Waltzing Matilda is one of those old folk songs that might have started out as a bit of fun but ended up being taken much to seriously.
Troy and the Wiggles with a few clever changes have brought some of the fun back into it while keeping the aussie character (plus the grand kids love it!).

The Road to Gundagai. There are probably many many more... and it is people like Troy and some of the country singers that do keep those songs alive... and the Wiggles is great exposure to a new generation.
Slim Dusty had some great songs too.
All are part of our heritage and lore (folklore) the stories/songs that are passed down from generation to generation.
I am not too sure if it's as prominent now in this day and age. So, hopefully some young ones will see this video and learn to play it the way it's meant to be played - with fun and the Aussie 'cheek'.
