ARTHUR LIPNER performing Crystal Mallet Vibes Solo (Arthur Lipner Comp)

- I wrote this song in 1995 as an exploration of using the 4 mallets to create a Soprano-Alto-Tenor-Bass functionality. After the first theme is presented, the Alto, Tenor and Soprano voices harmonize. Towards the end we return to 4 parts. Dead strokes help to enlarge the pallete of articulation possibilities, and are used freely throughout. The visual aspect of seeing these 4 parts corresponds directly with the graphic visual aspect of the vibes (all keyboard percussion, in fact) , thereby strengthening the experience of the composition for both student and audience. I had to move my body so the camera could see (tough on the spine!) so don't copy that aspect of my technique in this video.
This sheet music is available at www.malletworks.com. I changed a couple of notes - are your ears good enough to find which ones? Not trying to confuse everyone, just that I've played this piece maybe 1,000 times; like so much of the music I play, it is a living breathing organism that can be a little different on a given day and even change over time.
This song is contained on the first MalletWorks Music sampler cd "Mallet Works by MalletWorks" (1996), a disc which is almost out of print. The sister song for this SATB exploration is Kaleidoscope, a more complicated and longer but equally beautiful solo. A video of me performing that will be available on RUclips soon. Enjoy!

Learning this for my solo this year; I've been listening to it for a year and a half.
Oh, this sounds great! Only a month ago I started learning to play vibe. I love the way it sounds! Thank you!
Hey Mr. Lipner, just wanted to let you known that I ordered this piece from a website to do as my solo for solo and ensemble. Just wanted to tell you that I throughly enjoy this piece and wish some of the stuff you added was written. It's a really fun piece and I can't wait to perform it.
Absolutely Magic sound!!
This performance is actually quite different to the version in the book, so careful to those learning!
