As someone who has been here for all the behind the scenes moments of the high highs and the low lows I love you sharing this. The journey of a creator has so much more depth than most people will ever know or see. You have come so far and I love seeing your lows be just a little less deep and your highs get just a little higher. There is so much hope for all struggling with mental health. Get the help you need. Find people who build you. Speak up. Love on yourself during your lows. Work on yourself during your highs. You are not alone. You got this. 👏🏻

Nate, thank you. I’m a licensed therapist and have struggled with my own mental health for my whole life.
Your physical injury analogies are perfect. The idea of “it is and I am” is perfect. I’m going to watch this about 20 more times to digest everything you said.

During the Pandemic...when I first started thinking of a Channel...I approached a successful RUclips creator who is in my niche and asked them about how he decides to film what he does. And he said, he films what he would like to see. And I asked how he knew anyone would want to watch it. He said that he figured there were others like him who would enjoy it and he enjoyed making the films so it was enough. Period. Not the numbers, not the money, not the business...just enjoying the process of making the films. So that's where I started. Learning the craft. Learning the storytelling of video and how to incorporate my still photography into it. Old dog, new tricks. And having a blast. Not all the videos "hit". We realize that our audience seems to enjoy the outdoor/National Parks films more but that's not "all" of who WE are. We enjoy theme parks and city walks and museums. I'm having faith that others will find us who like that too! And I'll keep doing it as long as it's fun and as long as we keep connecting. It's enough. Period. (Thanks for your part in keeping me sane and not getting wrapped up in the numbers...you've been a huge help!)

After that, the next 5 videos were me covering what was recently more popular within my niche, and ironically they didnt perform as well. Even anylalytics showed less subs watched them than the previous 5.

I'm here for all the physical metaphors! Here's another: if, for example, your baby scratches you in the eyeball and you're half blind for a few days, you suddenly feel like you're "allowed" to ask for help. But that help is just as necessary, if not more, when you get the feeling that you don't want to be alive anymore.
So glad you're still here, Nate.

Nate. I am going to be 100% honest with you. People may not WANT this video, but they NEED this video. I've experienced loads of health issues (both physically & mentally). My most recent bout of health issues was "THE" virus in February. Instead of beating myself up about not being able to work on my channel things, I actually gave myself 3 weeks off. Week 1 - I basically did NOTHING. Week 2 - I started moving more, but didn't come to my computer for YT things. Week 3 - I came back to my computer to start prepping for the next week of filming. I had batched scheduled videos so my audience wouldn't have known I was taking time away if I hadn't mentioned it on my community tab. It's always great to take a breather if needed both physically and mentally.
Two weeks ago I was supposed to film for May. I felt so kind of out of it mentally that I decided to push it back and focus on connecting with other creators. When I went to film, I felt so great that I made 3 videos in 3 days. I didn't even feel guilty that I took the breaks I needed to take whether it was physically or emotionally which I believe is the FIRST time that's ever happened.

Considering this is an 8 minute video, I have so many things I want to comment. 😂
Really glad you posted this, Nate, thanks for the transparency. As someone who's actually survived trying not to exist (really bad patch in my life. To top it off, my brittle bones also decided to seriously ramp up the trauma that year!), I can relate heavily.
I find the "it is, and I am" idea tough, particularly around my medical condition, but it's something I've embraced more as time goes on. I'm in a much, much better place, in part thanks to taking on a "life happens around you, not to you. Control the controllable and don't stress the rest." approach.
As for posting this? It's very relevant to RUclips. Imposter Syndrome, low self esteem and so on, are regular, debilitating feelings for many creators, and I'm sure it's driven loads into depression.
This didn't feel like an odd video, it fits in well with your overall brand; caring, yet up front and realistic.
Keep it up, we're cheering you on. 😁

Thank you for this very important topic for creators, Nate 😊I am autistic and making videos is always a great challenge because of fewer energy levels/faster drain of energy through "normal" activities. But I love making videos nevertheless and it means a lot to me to be able to help others with my content. I often struggle with the frequency of my videos but I tell myself that it is not about pushing for optimization and performance but about keep going and building a community. As it is said everywhere: RUclips is not a sprint but a marathon. And if you sometimes think you should go faster and faster, no you don't have to. It is ok to find your own pace and sometimes even slow down a bit. If it helps you to keep going on the long run it is beneficial for your channel.
I have found for my channel that a video every other week is managable for me most of the time. So I go with that and don't pressure myself to aim for every week or several videos per week. Because I know it will only leed to me being burned out and then I don't make a video for longer because I have to recover from overdoing it. So I go with what I testet will work for me long time. And I don't push myself too hard if one week a video doesn't work out. Then I just do it the next week and it's ok.

How I have longed for such a long time to see RUclips growth content creators talk about Mental health of content creators. It seems to me like nobody is talking about what goes on behind the scenes. I am so glad you brought it up.
And not in the realm of “hey, mental health is real, take cover.” But you’ve talked about your own mental health and shared the lessons you learned. Which is so practical.
My heart goes out to you. That things will get better because you are one creator that upcoming creators look up to for growth and inspiration. And this video made me even trust your channel more because you are indeed real and human.

*THE MOST POWERFUL MOMENTS IN THIS VIDEO*
    1) "I identified it as pain."
    2) "I am separate from that pain."
    3) "It is, and I am."
That is the best thing I've heard in my entire training in advanced psychotherapy. Moreover, as a fellow depression sufferer, it cuts to the core of what holds us hopeless when we are depressed. Additionally, Nate, thank you for addressing what is at the core of the RUclips Quit Syndrome. It's what is at the core of burnout-period. _Misalignment with core values._ That you chose to be true to your core values by posting this video instead of algorithm-chasing speaks volumes about who you are. As content creators, we must hold our core values as dealbreakers and hold ourselves accountable for that drawn boundary. It keeps us purpose-focused and aligned with our reasons for choosing to be on RUclips. For me, it means everything.

This is such a key I factor. There are moments I know I need to make a video and I just don’t. Primarily because I just don’t have the energy. I’m 44yrs old and I am a mover. There are times I come home from work and my feet hurt and I am totally drained. I won’t make the video. I have taken a few breaks just to recharge. Nothing wrong with recharging family. I have had my own share of up and downs, not to the extent of Nate, but enough that I stopped making all forms of content for about a year.
The constant need to make content is real, especially when your viewers think this is all you do and constantly request things and get upset when you dont do what they ask.
If you are one of my viewers from my channel and watch Nates stuff, just know Im doing what I want right now and honestly dont care about your needs as im focusing on my needs right now. Harsh, but its the truth.

    Nate, thank you!
I had those experiences about ten years ago. A lot of it was related to (surprise!) social media, but there were other factors as well. The journey out was long and slow. I quit all social media and reevaluated everything. I suppose it’s going to be different for different people, but for me it was going back to nature, eventually leading me to buy a piece of raw land and start building something real - a cabin in the middle of nowhere.
That’s when I broke my ‘no social media’ policy and started my RUclips channel.
From the start I decided that no matter what, I am not going to let the RUclips algorithm and the analytics dictate what, when and how I produce. I am certain that it will affect how many people I reach with my content, but I can live with it. Mental health and a sense if purpose and accomplishment is far more important than views and hours. So far, so good.
Thanks again for bringing up the subject. It’s important that people know they are not alone in their struggle.

I started making RUclips videos as a some sort of therapy. For many years I worked on a career that I initially loved, but eventually, over time I found out that I wasn't enjoying it anymore.
Thanks to YT, I was able to feel some joy and pride again. It makes me so happy everytime I came up for an idea, write script, record a video, edit it, and so on. I haven't felt that for a while.
This almost 4-year process made me realize that I'm "a person", not an "engineer" (or whatever career / job title I've had). Basically, I'm not the career nor the job title. I'm an individual separate from my job. My job or career does not define me as a person.
The moment that we are able to separate the two, the better we will feel (in my opinion), because the challenges and hurtles of the job does not correlate directly to my identity, integrity, etc.
Thank you Nate for being a huge part of my process. I appreciate a lot your videos and how focused are from the individual (creator) and not just looking for views the same way as many other channels.

I have bipolar disorder so I deal with episodes of both depression and mania. The mania can help me to at least feel more productive and pump out vids (although sometimes they aren’t the best) and depressive makes it to where I either struggle to get through the process let alone even feel like getting out of bed. So I appreciate videos like this that not only acknowledge those peaks and valleys but it helps me to visualize what I go through in a different way. I often feel guilt for when I’m facing these episodes and I try to push through but it’s not always healthy for me to do so. Thanks for giving me another lens to look through and try not to feel this way.

Thank you Nate, there are so many people in your content advice niche and not one seem to actually care about helping people make better content and none have brought to light what you have. I’ve been struggling with mental disorders my whole life and most recently the worst form yet. But I wanted to take a step in the right direction and start doing things I can be proud of someday so I started making content because it’s something I never really had the courage to do even though I’d always wanted to. So before I started making content I watched your videos and everything you said compared to what other creators said was just so much more genuine and you actually seemed like you wanted to help people grow, so you didn’t gatekeep what really brings an audience like everyone else does. But what I mean to say is, is thank you for being a genuinely good creator who cares about his audience. I want to help people some day like you are with mental illness which is part of the reason I started at all. And thank you for inspiring me to keep going❤

    I’ve suffered from GAD
and depression over a decade ago. Last summer, I relapsed and couldn’t take life anymore. Currently I am in the recovery phase, and recently learned I have been living with undiagnosed ADHD so I still have a long ways to go. I too was hoping my motivation will “grow back” and I kept waiting for and hoping but days turned to months until I sought treatment. My OT said you can keep waiting for motivation to come and it won’t. I realized she’s right and we are working on setting very small goals and adding to it weekly. Of course it’s going to be a rollercoaster and some days I still can’t get out of bed and other days I can get a million things done. Thank you Nate for speaking out on this! This encourages others to share their stories when you feel like you’re not alone. I am trying to get started on my RUclips channel for months and would like to document tmy own mental health journey to inspire and help others who are feeling the same, but I am afraid of being judged because of the stigma that still exists around mental health.

I struggle more with just "getting it done" that I do ideas or skillset. One of the things I've decided is that I'm better off to wait until I can do it right than I am to force myself to put out something because the calendar says it's time. I put out a video once a week. Unless, of course, I don't. And I've decided that's ok. Between running our eBay business, taking care of aging parents and just trying to live...sometimes it's ok to wait. Allowing myself that grace has reduced my stress and allowed me to create better videos.
As always, I genuinely appreciate you and your content. You're a big part of the reason I stuck with content creation at all.

first off well done on shining a light on this issue. ive seen firsthand 2 ways(among many no doubt) youtube can generate mental health issues , yep the grind , people with 14000 subs doing a vid stating " im sorry but i have to call it quits for know as the impact of trying to create vids is just too much atm" as a ray of light all comments on that post where "you look after you , we will be here if or when you return "
the other was existing mental health issues being compounded by creator stress. the creator was lower key on the reason why they walked but after a short period of time they did a vid explaining the basic issue, once again the support and comments where just heartening really.
i personally struggle with either not finding the motorcycles i need to make vids or when i do then finding the time to work on the bike, film the bike and work edit it , do a 10hr day at work and have any other down time or sleep !!!. it was upsetting to see my little (and i mean only 65 subs and 22 vids} make lots of headway on the last bike i fixed only to now see it flatline at ZERO with no new bike to work on, even lost a sub .
then my personal channel metal detecting and outback, kayaking adventures etc having months of no new content.......argh
UNTIL I WORKED THROUGH THIS IN MY HEAD, WHY DO I MAKE VIDS
    IN ORDER
1 TO TRY AND MAKE A CHANNEL OF DOING SOMETHING I LOVE AND MAKE IT A BUSINESS MODEL TO REPLACE MY WORK
2 TO SLOWLY LEARN SKILLS IN CONTENT CREATION SO I CAN FULFILL A NEGLECTED PART OF ME.
3 TO HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND A FEW THINGS ABOUT MOTORBIKES

I was literally just journaling and crying because im highly considering quitting youtube and then your video showed up. Ive been posting for so long (not on this channel to type this comment) and I have very little to show for it. It feels like no matter what I do, I get nothing in return. The logical step is for me to quit... but in reality, I don't want to. Im actually crying as I type this because the thought of quitting hurts. I guess I just have to keep moving forward right? I just hope all this pain will pay off one day.

This is so on point! I literally just said to my Mom that I was going to be myself with my channel and post what I enjoy. It's very easy to forget the "reason" for my channel at times. There's so much pressure to create for the audience and lose yourself in the process. Thanks for your video. We all need to hear it. 😊 I love creating and I want to continue to love it.

This is wonderful, Nate. mental health needs to be recognized and respected. As a PTSD survivor, I have dark moments of extreme sadness, but always manage to find another day!
Sadly, I was in a position months ago, where I learned some people don’t have compassion for those who suffer for mental health and us sticking together and speaking about. It is a step for awareness. As my wife says if you have a disease it’s recognized with compassion but many in society don’t see that with mental health. I’m actually disgusted by the concept of ignorance.

I very much value these types of videos as I know we all struggle. I dont want others to strugge but it helps to see others be open about it and feel connected as we arent alone.
Separating yourself from your feelings and viewing from a different perspective is pretty much what meditation is and that is something that has helped me so much. There are many ways you can do it and they are all correct as long as you are doing it.
Your last book recommendation of "Essentialism" was very good! Ill have to try the next one!

THANK YOU for this video Nate. Mental issues are a huge part of many people's (and creators') lives that we have to live with. I'm gonna say it, you look and come out totally different from a person who's been struggling with these kind of issues, but I know how people hide it/cope with it.
I've suffered from depression/bipolar disorder most of my adult life. It can get incredible overwhelming, to the point to not want to exist anymore as you put it.
My passion of watch collecting and lately my Yotube Channel discussing that passion has really helped on that respect. It might not seem like a lot to people but it really has, it gives me drive and it makes me work my ass off in something I'm really interested in, and keeps ugly thoughts away.

Thanks for sharing all of this. It is high time that we talk about these things (mental health, depression, death by suicide, etc) and start to normalize having these difficult conversations. We all get caught up in the grind of our regular life, but when we look at our RUclips "career" (for a lot of us it is still a "career" and not a career) and it is rated on likes, views, comments, and all these external validations, it's so hard to detach self worth from these metrics. It really does mess with your head.
Thank you (again) for being open and an advocate for creators and our mental health. You are the only one who I see who regularly talks about this in a real and compassionate way. This is why we love you so much. Take care friend.

Hey Nate. I recently found your channel a few months ago and have always felt you approach content creation from an angle that "clicks" with my brain. This video I think highlights why. As someone with a lifelong struggle around depression, anxiety, and only recently acknowledging my neurodivergence and disabilities, a lot of this video relates with my own journey and what I'm feeling right now.
You spoke on working with your unique brain and struggles, and that's been the biggest thing that has made a positive change in my life. Instead of constantly trying to change something I cant, Im learning to work with it instead. Acknowledging my mental load lead me to taking a step back from content to finish grad school. I tend to take on too much until it all comes crashing down, but this time I saw the crash coming and (mostly) diverted it. I genuinely feel equipped to start my next phase of content creation. A phase I couldn't enter until I worked to understand how my brain and body works.
Thanks for all that you do for creators like me. Its really appreciated

This is almost word for word a thing that happened to me Nov 2021. I was helping my dad move out of our childhood home. We don’t have a good relationship. It’s very much like 2 strangers connected by family. For three weeks, every day, this was the most time we spent together. It flooded all these feelings I had. A conversation I had with my mom during that time, she said “you’re just this sad kid who never got your father’s attention” and then it hit me. I am not that sad kid anymore. That’s not me now. I am not that “version” of me. And then the clarity. I realized that in order for me to move on, I need to compartmentalize the old trauma, almost personifying it, acknowledge it, comfort it, and tell it we are fine now. We are here now and that is not longer here. So I’m watching this and taken aback like “wow I feel validated that a thing I wasn’t sure was even helpful ACTUALLY is helpful”. Even if I never told you specifically about this but the concept is shared. I really do appreciate these videos. As much as the strategy videos are helpful, these are the ones that are worth everything. So thank you, Nate.

Hey Nate! You're one of my favourite creators to watch on RUclips and always give me inspiration to keep working on videos! I've had some successes in the past but usually struggle to keep making more videos, even if I feel like I have the best idea in the world, there's always some mental block preventing me from getting it done and I really appreciate your discussions of mental health on your channel. You're the only channel-making-advice-type channel I watch anymore because I really connect with your style and personality. These types of channels tend to feel very corporate to me but your videos have so much personality in them, like a friend just sitting back and sharing research with me. Keep up the excellent work! thanks Nate. currently struggling to make videos on my larger channel after being hounded away by bullying. every time I click there it feels unsafe to share. I think video making is a glorious activity and I love my channels but there are definitely times to put mental health first until you feel better or less vulnerable or safer....regardless of numbers or the pushing of an algorithm. I like your channel because you do talk about these things. honestly I wonder how many people feel like me, we are constantly putting into place all the hints and tips and working hard only to see no growth, sometimes "how to do RUclips' channels feel like a bit of a slap when nothing seems to change. a more balanced approach like yours makes it more human and gets me back to a place of being a human simply enjoying video making trying to improve just for me and my own enjoyment. would I love to have huge numbers and an income from this....yes of course, will it happen ....no probably not.... honestly I feel that battling ageism on RUclips as an older lady is the biggest block ever, way more than ive heard anybody speak about, but can I love making videos still....yes! your videos normalises the ups and downs of putting our hearts and souls out there and its really appreciated ❤

Thanks for touching on this topic.
I have a health condition that I'm working through, which affects my ability to create and my psychology. It's fixable, and I'm doing everything I can to fix it, but it may take years before I'm free of the condition. In the meantime, it has a constant and significant effect on my ability to create and my self-image and self-confidence among other things.
I couldn't agree more that the challenge is often dealing with the grind, and that making videos that you want to make, rather than ones you hope to get views, makes things so much easier.
I don't entirely agree with what you say about just accepting you have a problem. At one level, as you suggest, it's important to not become attached to or defined by the issues you have. At another, for issues with a mental health component, I would advise anyone not to just accept that the way they are are feeling is an inevitable part of their lives and they can't do anything about it. I don't believe that humans have evolved to have serious mental health issues. Diet, lifestyle, who we choose to have in our lives and what we spend our time doing have huge impacts on how we feel. These are things that we often have control of, and I strongly believe that in many situations you can improve or eliminate your issues given knowledge, time, and the will and dedication to change the way you live. The unfortunate thing is that if an issue has a medical cause, the medical system isn't really designed to address the root cause of an issue, but merely band-aid symptoms, so if you want lasting change, then in many cases you'll have to be your own advocate, do research, and connect with others that have similar issues to figure out how to improve your situation.
One of my main health issues, for example, is chronic Mercury poisoning. This has a huge detrimental impact on many people's lives, including my own, and it isn't really recognized by the mainstream medical system (acute poisoning is much better recognized). I choose not to merely accept this as a part of my being, but do what I can to solve the issue, while also accepting the limitations it places on me in the moment. Just as with my RUclips channel, I'm working towards a payoff that I know will come one day, and doing my best to remain in high spirits along the way.

After trying to learn about mental health for years I think now I have started to understand a few things about depression and anxiety that I experience. Most of this is caused by my own narcissism. I need to embrace the idea that I am nothing in the bigger scheme of things and be just ok with that. I have to have the humility to keep trying to survive, but at the same time not have the hubris to keep trying to prove myself all the time.

The channel has been left dormant for years, which of course had detrimental effects, lost monetization, etc. And with that my motivation for making videos tanked even further. But re-activating the channel was the best, even somewhat therapeutic, decision ever. There is so much I could say, but chief of all, thank you. I have daily MH struggles & I realised a while back that we have to learn to live with these aspects of ourselves. Nobody should be expected to love them, but we probably never will be able to rid ourselves of them So, accepting they exist & finding ways to coexist without too much fall out is vital. Learning to accept our neurodivergence or brain chemistry is so important.
Yesterday I had x, y & z to do, which meant dealing with all kinds of tasks & people, but I absolutely had a 'shut down' head on. I really could not deal with anyone at all, I could barely even accept myself frankly. So, I gave myself a day pass. A day without 'have to's' or 'must do's'. No fighting how crappy I was feeling, (well maybe a little at first), but then just acceptance & permission to take a day out of tasks & expectations & deadlines, (imagined, self imposed or otherwise). It's never easy, but it does help.
Nate & anyone else who needs it, have this.... take this virtual hug & put it away for a time when you need it x

I love it when you make these types of videos and am sooo glad you made this one. When videos such as these are published, it can help others immensely. This is partly because it helps them to see that they are not the only ones enduring the aftereffects of trauma. Also, if it triggers memories or feelings in those who watch videos like this one they can discuss the issues with their therapists. Sometimes, it takes seeing or hearing something before an unidentified though or emotion can be brought to the forefront.
Thank you so much for being willing to open up & share. No doubt this video will help a lot of people. I truly believe that we pass people who are living with PTSD or other similar issues frequently. We live in a broken world & there are a lot of traumatized people out there who have learned to cover it up & shove it down because sadly that is what society dictates.
I read an amazing book entitled Bad Childhood, Good Life by Dr. Laura Schlessinger and recommend it to as many people as possible. It really helped me to figure a lot of things out and develop better coping skills & relationships. Her writing style made the book easy to read- I had a hard time putting it down.- Check it out 🙂

Something I've been a big believer in from my experience is the idea of checking in with yourself for how you feel about the things you are doing (for this context content, but doesn't have to be).
As someone who has been making content off and on for the better part of 14 years I've come to realize that we all live in "the process". You have a video do well or not -- what comes next? Another video. You are still here. You are still doing your thing. I personally want to enjoy the process, so that is something I'm always checking in on with myself. I find a lot of folks get lost in the grind, specifically around performance/numbers. It's really easy to but numbers are fickle. They are hardly ever (if ever) in your control too. I don't find it a fun process being tied to the outcomes. I can feel really good about a video and then be devastated it didn't perform, or the other way around happens too. For myself, I don't enjoy that -- I don't think it's a healthy place to be in. You know what you do have control over? The actions you take day to day. That is the process. That is where I want to mentally and emotional be stuck into.
I can't speak to how much this helps or hurts for actual mental illness, but rather this has been a helpful way for myself to look at things. Hopefully this can prove to be helpful for others as well.

As an adult I have tried to camp for 2 weeks in the mountains every summer and even though I was "Burnt Out" numerous times when I went, by the time I went back home I had new energy and was ready to take on the world. And unfortunatelly, most of those situations/emotions with them delivered - was from my close family, from age 6 till now (32,5y). I am saying till now, because most of them are dead - cancers, one suicide, etc. - and those remaining toxic relationships I blocked in the recent past. Now I am working on myself, keeping a few people/friends, and maybe, once in the future, I will have a chance to create MY family with woman I would love (and hopefully with her family/friends...). Good luck, and strong will on your journey, Nate. ❤

There are times when I just can't and then I come back one, two, or three weeks later and my subs and views have taken a major hit and I feel like I'm starting over. Then the guilt sets in of all the things I should have done to keep it going. Nate, as a content creator and a person that has battled with depression, I can truly say that you have a friend in me 🙂. Remeber that you are loved and all of us value the information you put out.

Nate my man this is exactly what I needed... You did a huge service to me, usually I don't instantly click on something but you just caught me in the exact moment the problem is happening. Good job
