"Most kids probably made it to stage 1-4 and thought it was the end of the game" ... Bold of you to assume i made it to stage 1-4 as a kid. My experience with most NES games was getting my ass handed to me and either playing a different game, or going outside to play or playing with Legos instead.
I think that you will really enjoy Adventure Island 2 and 3. Very similar formula but with dinosaur buddies and more varied worlds/levels. They're ridiculously challenging as well, though. Also, I must commend you for not using save states in any of these games. I am a staunchy purist too.
I’m excited for them as well! I plan to play 2, 3, and also 4 which only released in Japan. I’ve heard they are a lot more balanced than the first one.
Aww! My name was in the end of the video! Now I'm forever part of the history of the channel, I feel honored. I made anything more than enjoy the amazing content you are making. I would love to see you getting frustrating playing those games live, but I understand playing with an audience can change your perception of the game and be a distraction from the gameplay itself. Another great video. Thank you.
I would love to stream a little for some of these games if I had time to, but I have a full time job and a whole lot going on currently. Maybe someday if more people were interested I could do that though. Could be fun!
@@HPRshredder indeed it would be fun. Maybe when the channel get bigger. It is not easy to grow a channel nowadays, especially a retro gaming channel. But you are doing a great job, not only with the content but with the production value too. I'm hoping to see you getting some steam soon.
"playing with an audience can change your perception of the game and be a distraction from the gameplay itself." An approach can be avoiding blind playthroughs altogether, and instead providing insightful commentary to a game the streamer's already played. That's what Cybershell does, for example.
Adventure Island seems so challenging yet fun. Building that knowledge as you learn the levels looks so rewarding. You know what other game rewards you for knowing the stage? Mario Kart 64, when's that review coming? ⭐🏎
I hadn't heard much about this game, but now I can finally place the game's theme song! I hear it on lots of other videos/podcasts but never knew where it was from. Anywho, thanks for another great video!
Back in the day, I dont think i knew anyone that actually beat that game. It was one of those games that had us throwing our controllers at the tv, cringing really hard as it flew through the air as we realized that we shouldn't have thrown it and prayed that it didnt damage the controller or, god forbid, the TV. The game looked cool and it was good for a short play session but every kid knew that beating it was absolutely impossible, even thinking that perhaps, the game didn't even have an ending. I cant see any ending being worrh the torture you will go through while trying to get to it.
Dude 110% on all your final thoughts. AI1 was hard as hell, yet it somehow kept my attention, and I've been it at least 3 times, probably nearly a decade apart each. What's crazy, watching this footage again, is that I am right this moment trying for the 50th time to beat AI3, and I STILL have never beaten it! AI1 looks so much more brutal, but somehow I apparently managed, multiple times. In AI3 they do not pull that 6-8 enemies on screen at once shit, or the Ninja-Gaiden-level perfect enemy placement bullshit jumps that AI1 does, and you even don't need a Hudson Bee to continue with items! Geez they gave you dinosaurs AND let you stash them for later, and I STILL CAN'T BEAT IT! How was AI1 easier to me than 3??
The sadder part to me is poor AI2. That game was a cakewalk compared to 1 and 3. I'm sure it's hard for some people, but every time I pick it up, even when I was a kid, it was just a mellow grind. Some innovation, it's a good game, but it's far and away the AI I come back to the least, because it's too easy and unmemorable. Everything that made AI2 good is only improved on in 3, and I still have never effing beaten it.
This is the hardest game on the NES. I don’t care what anyone else says. Ninja Gaiden, Ghosts n Goblins, Castlevania 3, Battletoads. No, it’s Adventure Island. I’ve never been fucked so hard by a game in my life. Those final two worlds are some of the most devastatingly hard stages in all of 8-bit history. It’s got to be impossible to beat this without the Hudson Bee. I refuse to believe anyone could power through all 100 levels with only a handful of lives with no continues. I don’t believe it.
I couldn’t believe the difficulty when playing through it myself. Some of the stages had things placed in the perfect spots that you could not plan for without some form of foresight. I don’t know why it isn’t brought up more in “hardest games on the NES” lists because it’s absolutely there. I did enjoy it, but it is partially because it’s so funny how unfair it can feel. It’s a brutal game. Great music and aesthetics though.
Fun(?) Fact: "Kelo" is a mistranslation of "kero". Kero is an onomatopoeia for the sound frogs make in Japanese. So, translated, and localized correctly, it's name is Ribbit.
The eggplants are a good luck symbol in japan, and a cultural reference that was mostly understood in japan only. When you get an eggplant, it is pronounced "nasu" (which also means "accomplish", "build up!" Or even "hurry"). It is a pun of words. Another thing: Takahashi Meijin (the real person in which Master Higgins is based upon in Japan) was a real celebrity for the kids, like a hero, because he could accomplish athetic and strength feats. So Hudson took the Wonder Boy and replaced it with Takahashi Meijin, therefore, this game got its name "Takahashi Meijin no Bou-Ken-Jima" (the island of adventures of Takahashi Meijin).
This was one of those games none of us held any delusions about ever actually finishing as kids. Set up that foundation for the follow ups, which were some of the finest games in their genre at the time (sadly we never got 4 overseas). The SNES games were always a bit odd with how the first game is like a remake of this title, and was also a pretty consistent rental for my friends at release, but Super Adventure Island 2 decided to go all in on being a Metroidvania and was a very interesting shift. Given that Wonder Boy has been making a sort of resurgence the last few years I wouldn't mind getting some Master Higgins remakes/reboots, always loved him and his Hudson cap.
I'm really excited to play the later entries in the series. Currently, Adventure Island 4 is slated to be the last famicom game I cover since it released so late.
I've had maybe four sessions playing this and have got to stage 5. I was thinking it was difficult and thought I'd check a review for confirmation. I've stopped the video at 20:35 because I don't want too many spoilers. At the same time, I'm wondering if I actually want to continue. With some games, it's like they have a personality. If this game were a person, it would be a psychopath. It's superficially charming and that draws you in, but it is a true sadist at heart. There are little segments which are almost genius in how they've been calculated to be as cruel as possible. For example, the first time you get the skateboard, the first crow you encounter takes an extra hit or two. The reason this is so clever is because 1) It will likely kill you the first time because you don't know what to expect and aren't used to the skateboard controls. 2) It will probably kill you when you revisit this segment because you probably didn't notice the first time how many hits it took and have become accustomed to them taking less hits. It's such a small thing, but it foreshadows what's to come. Another example is on area 4 round 3. You have lost the axe. Up ahead is a segment you know will be much easier with the axe. In front of you there's an egg containing the axe, right on the edge of an icy ledge which overlooks a gap. Beyond the gap is a short sheet of ice and an icicle hanging from the ceiling immediately before a ledge you must jump up. If you approach this with speed you can jump the gap and jump up onto the ledge under the icicle before it falls, but you'll knock the egg into the gap and loose the axe. If you approach the ledge carefully you can get the axe from the egg, but the screen moves forward so that you only have a short run-up to clear the gap. To get enough momentum to clear the gap means you can't stop before the icicle falls on you, but because of the short run-up, you can't clear the gap and carry enough speed to jump to the next ledge before the icicle falls. It's pure sadism.
What I love about this comment is that it highlights what makes this game special. Everyone has different takeaways from different moments where the game is absolutely ridiculous and taunts you. You’re right - the game IS sadistic. In my final thoughts section (which you can skip ahead to, I don’t think it actually spoils much) I said essentially that you’ve seen about everything the game has to offer upon completing world 4. All the different stage types including the wasteland; just minus the insane difficulty of world 6-8. I’ve heard that Adventure Island 2-4 are much less cruel. I would say if you’re genuinely not having fun you’re not missing too much by skipping the final half of the game. However…. Your name is “napalmhardcore” so I feel like you kind of have to lol. But for real, it is too hard for its own good. It’s part of the draw though - to just see how ridiculous it’s going to get.
@@HPRshredder The NES is a system I never owned as a kid, so I'm exploring its library and playing all the classics I missed out on which made it so iconic. I have made two observations: 1) A high proportion of NES games are pretty well polished (I was playing Amiga throughout most of the NES' lifespan and its library wasn't nearly as polished on the whole). 2) A high proportion of NES games are HARD! I'm playing on MiSTer and am not allowing myself to use cheats or save states (I consider the Hudson bee to be more of a secret than a cheat as it's in the manual). I've recently beat Batman, Return of the Joker, Contra, Bionic Commando, Castlevania and SMB2 (surprisingly difficult). Oh, I also beat Kirby's Adventure but that was a non-event in terms of difficulty. While some of the aforementioned games are hard, none of them are sadistic in the way Adventure Island is. The closest are probably the Mario games because they use items as bait. They tempt you with an item you're more likely to die trying to get than if you just ignore it and carry on.
@@HPRshredder Oh, I forgot to mention. The reason behind my username is actually a bit less edgy than it sounds. My uncle used to call me Napalm because it sounds vaguely like my first name. I don't think he even considered the incendiary substance when he decided to call me that. The second part is because I became interested in parkour for a while and my work mate used to ask me if I was going to do some hardcore parkour. I just kind of slapped the two together when I was struggling to think of a username that wasn't taken and that I'd remember.
I just beat Castlevania recently as well! The video for that is actually processing right now. (It takes a while for RUclips to process 4K footage for small channels) And you’re choosing a great way to play. I really would like to own a MiSTer myself. I play off of the Hi-Def NES mod - but I do own an Analogue Super Nt. I wish they would allow more cores on it since I’m not delving into SNES for some time at this rate. I’m also playing all these games for the first time. My first system was an N64 but I didn’t really get into gaming as a hobby until like 2010 or so once I stepped outside of the Xbox 360 Gears/Halo box a little bit. I’ve found a lot of them to be really good so far. I think most people that play on emulators don’t really get the kind of low-latency experience you can get with something like a MiSTer. And they also aren’t playing them mindfully. If you’re not really trying to play and beat a game you’re going to miss out when it comes to these Gen 3 experiences
@@HPRshredder I'm so grateful to the community that has made the MiSTer possible. It's astonishingly good value for retro game enthusiasts. I was initially going to go with the Analogue consoles because they seem like incredible devices and Analogue truly understand what enthusiasts want, but the MiSTer is more versatile and I was interested in some of the cores it offered which are absent on the Analogue devices. If I had a physical collection of games, I'd probably own the Analogue consoles in addition to the MiSTer. I started out on Atari 800XL and a second hand C64. I don't really remember playing the C64 because it crashed most of the time while loading games, so it barely ever got played. I was too young to really appreciate the games or make any progress though. Amiga was where it really started for me and I later got a (second hand) Mega Drive. It's probably a good thing that Amiga was my main system growing up because I'm still bitter about how we were treated in PAL territories. When I learned how PAL games differed from the NTSC versions, it felt like someone stole part of my childhood because, in a way, it felt like I'd not been playing the real games. Can you really say you've beat a game if it's running 20% slower? Playing games as they were intended is also why I don't use save states or cheats. You mention Halo/Gears. I'm also into more modern games too (though I almost exclusively play offline). I own a PC and have traditionally bought PlayStation consoles. I've never really been the fanboy type and I have nothing against XBOX. I just couldn't afford to own multiple consoles and for reasons too lengthy and boring to go into, it made more sense for me to go with PlayStation. I must admit though, some of the trends and business practises surrounding gaming in recent years are really starting to get me down. I don't like that so many games release broken. I don't like how some games feel incomplete without DLC and/or micro-transactions to pad them out. I absolutely hate some of the manipulative mechanics built into games that encourage people to keep pumping money into them, and the idea of games as a service is deeply troubling to me. What really scares me though is the rise of game streaming services. If game streaming services take hold and we start seeing popular games release as exclusives to a particular service, it will not only end the community's ability to preserve games, it will strip us of all power we have as consumers because we'd have to agree to their terms if we want to play. We'd no longer be customers, we'd be service users. We have the power to boycott a game if we don't like something about it or the way the company is conducting itself. If game streaming becomes the norm and people don't even own hardware capable of running games locally in a few years, people wouldn't be able to boycott a single game, they'd have to boycott the service. That would mean they wouldn't be able to play at all and I just don't think people are that strong willed. I don't think people recognise the threat posed by game streaming and I sincerely hope it isn't too late before they do. For now, I'm enjoying exploring retro games. It's so much simpler. Even stuff like worrying whether I have all the worthwhile DLC (or all the DLC that makes the game worthwhile) can be a chore. I like being able to just play a game knowing it's complete and not feel like I'm constantly being prodded for money.
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! I do plan to play all of the Adventure Island titles. I think in terms of release date, Adventure Island IV might be the last one on my list. But I do hope to play all of them. Thanks for your comments! I appreciate them.
That's an awesome video about an awesome game! Just want to note few moments. Snakes will shoot only if you hit a rock or boulder with your axe. Number of shots they make is exactly the number of times you hit a rock or boulder. And a honey girl makes her first appearance in 1-1, not 1-2.
There's a honey girl in 1-1?? I played that level a lot and I don't recall seeing one -- is it hidden? And that's a great tip about the boulder that I didn't know! That also explains why the cobras weren't firing when I did not have a weapon. I thought they just only fired at you when you had one. Interesting.
@@pum32 That's right! I skip that part in favor of the secret area most runs, but I did venture through there twice I think. Thank you for the correction.
Can you provide me with some info on how you're playing Famicom games in the usa? What top loader system are you using? Are those the go tos most ppl use for famicom games? Id looked into buying a famicom but then ran into issues with connecting to the tv and plugging them in and the short controller cables etc and lost interest.... Any info would be appreciated as I've always wanted to make get a game or ten from Japan to play. Thx
Sure! It's the AV Famicom which is a toploader. That comes with standard AV cables so there isn't any difficulty getting it to run on CRT TVs. It looks pretty much identical to the toploader NES but without the bump by the cartridge slot and with a different shaped hole. It comes with the "dogbone" style NES controller but you can plug any NES controller into it. For power, its original cable doesn't work in the USA I believe -- but luckily the SEGA Genesis power supply works with it. My system is modified with the Hi-Def NES mod but those are hard to come by these days. Famicom games can also be played on a regular NES though, all you need is a sort of ribbon cable adapter that goes inside the NES and the game plugs into that. There are a lot of ways to play!
Haven’t heard of him but I’ll check him out! The design of Master Higgins is actually based off of the former president of Hudson Soft! I probably should have mentioned that in the video.
Just found your channel and this is a game I've struggled with for years. Bought it in middle school, but never finished past 6-2 if I recall. After seeing this, I think I'll fire it up again and see if I can get through the game because I love the challange of the balls to the walls NES games. Would love to hear your thoughts on some of the other super tough games from the era. Definitely subbed and hope to see more in the future!!
6-2 might have been the longest I spent on any one stage. It is so hard. It prepared me for 8-2 though which is essentially a harder version of 6-2. It's a super challenging game. BEST OF LUCK! Hold on to that weapon!
@@HPRshredder Ended up finishing it. Without a doubt, the hardest game I've ever played, bar none, even up against Convoy no Nazo on the Famicom. Got to 7-4 yesterday with no weapon and that one jump over the spiders at checkpoint 3 did me in. Ended up shutting it off before regretting it. Pulled out my Game Genie this morning to get back to World 7 and finished it. 7-4, 8-2, and 8-4 might be the hardest levels I have ever encountered in any game ever. Feels amazing to finish it even if it wasn't single segment, but golly, what a game.
@@realsquirrelhours565 Congratulations! 🎉 I agree that it is definitely one of the hardest games I’ve ever played. I think one potential reason people don’t talk about it too much in the “hardest nes games” lists is because they give up and think because it’s kind of cutesy that it isn’t as difficult. And I know the exact spider you’re talking about. I only started having success with that one when trying to go over rather than through. But congratulations again for beating it. You can finally put it behind you.
Actually, I know what you mean with 8-4 where your jumps have to be "juuuuuust right", but I had to figure this out to make things so much simpler; you can do short hops, but because you automatically do the High Jump when moving or holding B, you have to release both the D-Pad and B, then press A while you're still running. It might sound like thight timing, but actually not really, Master Higgins still keep going for a fair bit, plus it's so much better to do than to try and jump above the spiders, that was a hell I will never have to do again, knowing what I've shared.
A few years ago I decide to replay some NES games and (try to) finish them. Adventure Island was one of them (childhood game, no need to say I never beat it back then). I managed to reach the farthest I've ever been in there, beating my previous mark. I was at 7-4, but I lost my weapon the previous stage or so. I tried and tried, but could get past some spider despite trying for what I think was over an hour (with some breaks). If only I had a hammer at that point :'( Great game nonetheless though, love it!
I also had to do 7-4 without a hammer and it was one of the hardest stages in the game for me. What would trip me up was the last spider jump right before the edge of the forest. I found going over it was easier than trying to jump through. Thanks for sharing your story!
@@HPRshredder Pretty sure it was that one too for me, tried everything (or so I though) to get by; over, in-between, running fast, going slow, never managed it! One day I want to try again!
@@Mioum I've instantly remembered the place you are talking about. I've spent so much time trying to beat it without an axe once, and somehow I did it. But eventually 8-2 made me rage quit. Not many people are talking how hard this game is, but it is brutal.
@@pum32 It is one really tough game for sure! Some "NES hard" game can be just cheap and/or poorly designed, but this one is just straight up brutal and truly difficult! If only we could have an easier access to weapon in these later stages!
I remember as a kid in the mid 90s they used to have an old video game arcade at Luna Park which an original copy of this game. It was the best game in the arcade but it was extremely difficult so I couldn't make it far. That arcade used to feel like a time warp.
Very nice review as usual. God I used to love and hate the whole franchise on NES. Neighbor of mine used to have all 3, needless to say none of the kids around could get very far in it.
There’s also a fourth that came out in Japan only! I head the second two were much more forgiving than the first one though. I’m excited to play them actually. 🙂
Whenever I see the little guy who's the main character in this game, my brain insists that it's actually Cupid Cartman from South Park. But that just makes me root for him even more. ❤
In my opinion this game is most similar to Super Mario Bros. 2 (J) and I wonder if it took inspiration from it. Just because of the emphasis on forward momentum, precise acrobatics and fast reflexes.
When I think of Adventure Island, I think about this Japanese TV show called Gamecenter CX. In it, a middle-aged comedian plays old Famicom games and tried to beat them. He did Adventure Island in one episode and it seemed like hell. I tried the game when I was a kid and I think I got to level 4? Maybe.
I found out about Game Center CX after someone commented about it on my Layla vid. It's excellent. The jacket I wear now is based off if Arino's jacket. This game is super brutal though. One of the hardest games I've ever played.
I had this game growing up. I remember trying to play it a few times but I could never make it out of the first level. It was always just that "hard jungle game" that no one ever played.
Adventure Island was a great game although I prefer Wonder Boy on the Master System. I really liked it when both games diverged giving us very different experiences.
This was one of my most hated games as a kid. Not sure if I had bought it or was renting it, but I vividly remember getting so mad at the controls. I felt like I was sliding everywhere, and the skateboard made things even more frustrating. I don't recall ever thinking that I could simply NOT take the skateboard though...
I might try and stream this one soon just to suffer lol. I had fun with the game but I think it actually made me scream. Maybe not as much as Ghosts 'n' Goblins did because this one was at least assembled well, but the troll-y nature of it was so frustrating at times. Still, despite that, I managed to have some fun with it.
Had to look that channel up, but thank you! I think I've seen one or two videos from him before and he does have a very relaxed vibe. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it
Hey, you said that the bee was "apparently" in the manual. I found it in the American version of the manual online, but could you please confirm that it is in the Japanese? Does it say anything about pressing the D-Pad and start after collecting the bee too? You can use Google Translate's image translation for the latter part.
I wish I could peek for you, but I no longer own the game. Typically after a season I sell the games on my Ko-Fi page or on eBay. I use what I get back to help pay for the next batch. I can’t afford to keep them since I’m not very wealthy - my collection is actually quite small.
I think Wonder Boy is better, you don't need to find secrets to have infinite continues, there's a few environments they didn't include in Adventure Island like the volcano, less reused stages, and the enemies don't move nearly as spaztically, epecially those damn frogs... Adventure Island is the winner for music though.
I might do a gaiden-style season where I go back and play games I missed, but it would have to be a game I came back to later. I've heard that one is really troll-y lol.
This was SO HARD when I was a kid. I have thought about replaying it on stream using save states. EDIT also it made me HATE eggplant IRL. Skateboard is wacked, this game loves getting at you. And I never knew what Milk was good for other than it was good.
This game is about the hardest I've covered. I streamed it half a year or so ago and made it to world 7 I think before having to put it down. Wanted to do the whole game, but it's a lot for a single sitting.
It's that combination of good music, a great aesthetic, and good controls paired with punishing difficulty and troll-y enemy placements. It'll make you mad but it's fun.
@@HPRshredder exactly!! Your video summed it up PERFECTLY, I love love the cute enemies, and master Higgins and the music, and the game is well-made and well-programmed but it just works against you the whole time, while also being really likable :)
another exciting episode of "Shredder plays an old video game and then talks about it so that way I never have to touch it"! no i, i know you advise people to at least give the game a shot, and i do respect that, but hearing it compared to ghosts 'n goblins really activates my "never touch" feelers. good shit as always, thanks for the video also what the fuck is hungy boi's mouth doing i don't get it EDIT: also if you don't mind, i wanted to ask what editing software you use. i used to use videopad, but it only ever let me export to .mkv files unless i paid premium, and even then the software itself was pretty ehh at times. i switched to filmora for the dumb thing i've been working on making on and off since the middle of the year, but that has a weird saving hiccup where unless i save the project as a new file, it doesn't actually save my progress. (you can imagine my frustration the first time i discovered that bug)
If you search "Takahashi Meijin" you will see the actual human that Master Higgins is based off of. I think with the mouth they were just attempting to give him a somewhat derpy look lol. It grew on me a lot, I love it. & with any game here if it *looks* like something you know you wouldn't enjoy it's never something you need to try. The controls are tight though. But I have heard Adventure Island II, III, & IV are much much more fair in the difficulty department. And thanks for the comment. I always look forward to them. In case you skipped the final thoughts portion at the end your name is there (just in case you missed it). And I don't ever mind answering technical questions. I use Final Cut Pro. I had never used a Mac before buying one with this channel in mind. Since it is built off of UNIX, anyone who is familiar with Linux will have a very easy time adjusting to it. I went that direction because I really don't like using Adobe software. I don't like the "Creative Cloud" and I don't like how they always have processes running in the background. That's awful about losing your progress. I haven't heard of Filmora so I can't really comment on it, but I am still new to editing. If I were using a Windows OS I think I would opt for DaVinci Resolve. That has a free and paid version and has been gaining popularity. It's also laid out similar to Final Cut and Premier. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@HPRshredder filmora and davinci resolve (specifically the free variant) are (apparently) rather similar in terms of setup and what they can both do, i did dabble slightly in resolve after the filmora saving bug and nearly redid what progress i made in filmora in that, but i couldn't figure out how to do simple audio mixing, unfortunately. like, i found the area to DO audio mixing, and options for it, but i was very overwhelmed with what i was looking at. imagine being put in the cockpit of an airplane. like yeah, this sure is where you control the airplane, but i have no idea what i'm looking at otherwise lol. davinci resolve may be something i'll consider seriously switching to after i watch some tutorials, but i'll still power through in filmora for the remainder of my current project AND i did NOT notice my name in the special thanks section! my dumbass thought it was a list of names that contributed to a patreon or some other donation thing, so it completely flew over my head while watching. that means a lot to me man, thank you!
@@HPRshredder Yeah, I hate it when I forget something in one of my videos, be it a clip, transition, etc. I've learned to double check my work before uploading because of it. Speaking of, I did corrupt Adventure Island way back in the day, and got some good results from it, it you want a quick laugh: ruclips.net/video/YCHMaXPLvcg/видео.html
I got the game because it was cheap when I was 10. I looked at the back cover of the box and thought it was like a regular adventure game like castlevania. Nope was I wrong. Played the first stage and was like omg this game is hard as hell. The farthest I have ever gone is up to world 4s final boss and died. Never played this game again. There is something about this game where you sort of want to rush even though you should be slow and methodical. But being slow and methodical works against you as well.
This game is a BASTARD. 8-3 is unbeatable by humans! Edit: I typed that 5 minutes ago as I was playing, and I freely admit I’m using save states on my WiiU, but I did it. I just beat 8-3. Oh my god.
I think that ultimately the game wants to motivate you to try again and see how far you can make it, however I completely understand anyone not wanting to play Adventure Island due to all the troll-y enemy and pitfall placements. In the end I did manage to have fun but it was definitely paired with frustration.
This is a really great channel, thank you for all the videos. The « master » in Master Higgins + his white skin + tropical setting always made me feel he was a rich settler, possibly with slaves or at least servants as a kid. Dark.

"playing with an audience can change your perception of the game and be a distraction from the gameplay itself."
An approach can be avoiding blind playthroughs altogether, and instead providing insightful commentary to a game the streamer's already played. That's what Cybershell does, for example.
Adventure Island seems so challenging yet fun. Building that knowledge as you learn the levels looks so rewarding. You know what other game rewards you for knowing the stage? Mario Kart 64, when's that review coming? ⭐🏎
What a lovely smile that lovely tina has with her one tooth! I guess it also matches Master higgins smile too
Discovered you from a Reddit post. Going through your video log now. Awesome presentation on some of my favorite games. +1 Sub!
It's probably the most difficult game I've played. I can't imagine doing it without continues. Even with continues it can feel impossible.
That big gap between the clouds cracked me up. What a dick move.
Keep in mind I could only showcase a small portion of the tomfoolery in this video.
100% a fun fact
@@HPRshredder fun fact number 2 "Kalas" is a mistranslation of Karasu, wich means crow in japanese
This game seems so trolly, I love it
The eggplants are a good luck symbol in japan, and a cultural reference that was mostly understood in japan only.
(It takes a while for RUclips to process 4K footage for small channels)
And you’re choosing a great way to play.
These reviews are stellar, definitely under appreciated
Thanks, man! I appreciate that.
I love this game series! Hopefully you'll make reviews on the rest of the Adventure Island games! Love it!!
Honey girl is in the egg on the uphill part of part 3.
HUNGY BOI GANG
You really like the little fella. :)
He reminds me another RUclipsr, John Riggs. 😂😂
Looks like another challenging game. How's Higgins ganna get out of this one?
Oh boi!
I can imagine an island discovered by Captain Cook named Adventure Island
This channel kinda givesnme LGR vibes and im absolutely here for it.
If only I had a hammer at that point :'(
Great game nonetheless though, love it!
Love the Video, I hope you do some Analysis of Takahashi Meijin no bouken II , III, IV
I plan to play all 4! 🙂 The fourth is the last officially licensed Famicom title; you just have to!
I remember as a kid in the mid 90s they used to have an old video game arcade at Luna Park which an original copy of this game. It was the best game in the arcade but it was extremely difficult so I couldn't make it far. That arcade used to feel like a time warp.
Great info, esp on the continue secret.
Great presentation, you earned a sub!
Is this the real JB? You should do a show on Adventure Island.
This game IS crazy hard. I couldn't even pass the first stage
@@HPRshredder That is awesome that you like GCCX and the jacket makes sense, now.
I had this game growing up. I remember trying to play it a few times but I could never make it out of the first level. It was always just that "hard jungle game" that no one ever played.
The boss scared me as a kid. Never had much experience with this game but i had AI2 on Game Boy
Adventure Island was a great game although I prefer Wonder Boy on the Master System. I really liked it when both games diverged giving us very different experiences.
I’m digging your channel!
Thanks!
I played the sequel. I didn't beat it. But it has cute dinosaurs.
You have Wendigoon likability vibes. I could see this channel really taking off
Had to look that channel up, but thank you! I think I've seen one or two videos from him before and he does have a very relaxed vibe. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it
@@HPRshredder yeah, definitely. Relaxed vibe, but also effective at conveying a lot of information. Keep doing what you're doing
In the original, the death eggs were speckled and very obvious to avoid.
I can’t afford to keep them since I’m not very wealthy - my collection is actually quite small.
fantastic content, the algo sent me to you and you have a new sub
Thank you! Glad you like it, there's more coming soon!
I had this game and never beat it , in the day.
I’m a new sub. Love the channel. I gotta look at your videos to see if you did one for Ninja Kid.
I'm excited to play Wonder Boy myself. Especially when those turn into more metroidvania style games.
You should play Kickle Cubicle
I hope master Higgins will return in Mario kart 9 as one of the Konami/Hudson soft DLC racers..
Crow in Japanese is karasu, so cavas is very similar
Please make a video on japanese version smb2 lost levels, just like this. Loved the game.
This is my game nemesis, I’ve hated adventure island just as much as I’ve loved it, which is an awful lot
It's that combination of good music, a great aesthetic, and good controls paired with punishing difficulty and troll-y enemy placements. It'll make you mad but it's fun.
@@HPRshredder exactly!! Your video summed it up PERFECTLY, I love love the cute enemies, and master Higgins and the music, and the game is well-made and well-programmed but it just works against you the whole time, while also being really likable :)
another exciting episode of "Shredder plays an old video game and then talks about it so that way I never have to touch it"! no i, i know you advise people to at least give the game a shot, and i do respect that, but hearing it compared to ghosts 'n goblins really activates my "never touch" feelers.
good shit as always, thanks for the video
also what the fuck is hungy boi's mouth doing i don't get it
EDIT: also if you don't mind, i wanted to ask what editing software you use. i used to use videopad, but it only ever let me export to .mkv files unless i paid premium, and even then the software itself was pretty ehh at times. i switched to filmora for the dumb thing i've been working on making on and off since the middle of the year, but that has a weird saving hiccup where unless i save the project as a new file, it doesn't actually save my progress.
@@HPRshredder filmora and davinci resolve (specifically the free variant) are (apparently) rather similar in terms of setup and what they can both do, i did dabble slightly in resolve after the filmora saving bug and nearly redid what progress i made in filmora in that, but i couldn't figure out how to do simple audio mixing, unfortunately. like, i found the area to DO audio mixing, and options for it, but i was very overwhelmed with what i was looking at. imagine being put in the cockpit of an airplane. like yeah, this sure is where you control the airplane, but i have no idea what i'm looking at otherwise lol. davinci resolve may be something i'll consider seriously switching to after i watch some tutorials, but i'll still power through in filmora for the remainder of my current project
AND i did NOT notice my name in the special thanks section! my dumbass thought it was a list of names that contributed to a patreon or some other donation thing, so it completely flew over my head while watching. that means a lot to me man, thank you!
Area 6 boss likes like a walrus or sea lion imo
Wonder Boy is the better game I think
I have yet to play it, but I would not be surprised if it was! The later Adventure Island games may give it a run for its money though
I think you forgot the bassers.
I think you’re right… 🤨 damn. I mention them in the stages at least when they’re first introduced. Good catch.
@@HPRshredder Yeah, I hate it when I forget something in one of my videos, be it a clip, transition, etc. I've learned to double check my work before uploading because of it.
Oh my god.
It is 100% cruel and unforgiving lol. Congrats on making it past 8-3!
@@HPRshredder it’s that ONE SPECIFIC jump and fire with the bat and the falling platform in 8-3. You know the one.
When a game wants you to die every second, it's not fun to play...
I think that ultimately the game wants to motivate you to try again and see how far you can make it, however I completely understand anyone not wanting to play Adventure Island due to all the troll-y enemy and pitfall placements. In the end I did manage to have fun but it was definitely paired with frustration.
@@HPRshredderI ended it 5 min ago. This is not a video game, this is only stupid, bad and nasty programming...Wonderboy is so much fun to play...
@@christophe2201 I do plan to play Wonderboy eventually!
2:39, this is not the first time you've said "one of" when you clearly meant "one-off". Is this a running gag or something?
This game is exctly what nearly killed the video game and what is not to do in a video game. I understand why those bastards were fired from SEGA...
Are you wearing an off center ponytail like the girl in Napoleon Dynamite?
You make fun of the story...as if Mario is any different for over 30 years (and it still works!)
ok but temino
2:10 Like one of my ex gfs. Lol
This is a really great channel, thank you for all the videos.
The « master » in Master Higgins + his white skin + tropical setting always made me feel he was a rich settler, possibly with slaves or at least servants as a kid. Dark.
