It is kinda bizarre that Capcom never released a "classic skins" costume for every returning playable character. Vergil got his DMC3 outfit, so I don't understand why you can't play using DMC2 Dante's outfit or Nero's DMC4 outfit here. But I guess that's where modding saves the day.
It is because Vergil's "outfit" is literally just a recolor, just like every other skin in the game. It just happens that color change matches what Vergil looked like earlier
