My grandfather was soo proud of that ship. We went to a local airport to see a corsair off of that ship. That was one of two tears I've ever seen come outta the guy. The other was when my son was born.
@@cxc Thank you. Yes he was. He joined the Navy in 1948 and retired in 1973. He worked his way up from seaman recruit through the Warrant Officer program and retired as a LtCmdr
I served 3 years on the intrepid in the 2nd division 1962, 1963 and 1964 as a boatswain mate I was leading seaman and boat coxswain of the number 6 liberty boat my crew took care of officers country and t quarter deck and port side, I painted the Gemini Capsules on the stacks and the Banners that draped on the starboard side accommodation ramp boarding the aircraft carrier
After being wounded on Tarawa and spending months in a hospital in Hawaii, my dad was a US Marine attached to the USS Intrepid….he was wounded again on 25 November 1944 when Kamikazes hit the flight deck……very dangerous day.
My best friend served on the Fighting I in WWII I got to go with him for 3 of the reunions His generation truly was the best generation ever I treasure the memories I have of things we did together for 31 years. I’m so glad I got to have a few tours of this ship and he told me how his job was folding and unfolding the wings of the planes out on the flight deck He was aboard during 2 kamikaze attacks He told me how during one of the attacks that he and another sailor were running for their lives across a catwalk The other sailor told him that he didn’t know how to pray. My friend told him to just bow your head and start talking to God and ask for help The guy did just that and they both made it through that He died 1/1/20 I sure miss him. He was the best friend I ever had Rest easy James K Fordice. See you on the other side.
It sucks that this vessel was decommissioned and taken apart my grandfather served on this vessel back in 73 I loved hearing stories about his time when he was in the Navy
@@cxc Thanks for the reply. He was my big brother. Passed away from pancreatic cancer 4 yrs ago. I watch these videos, and wonder what life was like there. In many ways that ship, and his time in the navy in general, shaped his life.
@@sej4323 Sorry to hear your loss. I'm not sure if you're a subscriber, but I have a video coming out this Friday dedicated for the military (Navy). Highly recommend!
The intro has several mistakes in it. A.battleship is distinct from destroyers and frigates as shown. Carriers have a different lineage than he described. Still a good video.

I served on the Intrepid 1969-1973. Started off in 2nd. Division, then transferred to 1st. Division as a 3rd. Class Boatswain's Mate.
Thank you for your service. Boatswain's Mate is a rough department man, these guys have a tough culture

Did you come aboard in Norfolk, Philly or Quonset Point? I was flown on in Yankee Station 1968 to 1970 on the USS Intrepid CVS-11.
Enjoy your videos mate, really interesting for NYC resident. Thanks for doing them.
Awesoms stuff!!!
Outstanding presentation of this interesting piece of our history. The era of World War II and the Apollo missions shaped the world we live in today.
It's an honor to preserve such great history.
Starts with the song to get every sailor to stand up 😂 classic
My great grandpa Andrew William cope was on this ship in ww2
Keep it up !

I wish she was still available for activation
Space Force is under USAF. Is there any further developments or reasoning behind that choice recently?
Nope! I think this whole Space Force thing has been done hastily out of the President's need for egotistical claims.
