We used to venture into Phibsborough to go to the ice rink...the area seemed really rough (and I grew up in Drimnagh)! Now it's full of coffee shops and 'creative types', and I'm paying extortionate rent in the 'nice' part of Broadstone that calls itself Phibsborough because it has notions. Dublin's a strange town! Broadstone does have a great community feel to it though, which I hope it never loses.
If you are ever passing through (Yes, you!) do yerself a favour and go into the hardware store beside the Golden Chip. It's an Aladdin's cave in every sense, treasures piled up on the shelves and floor. The auld fella who runs it is the only one who knows where anything is and can find it in under a minute. Anyone else would be doomed to wander forever lost, if they could make it past the mounds of coat hooks and vacuum bags.
The back page also has a mysterious upstairs ping pong dungeon. Legend has it they give you free pizza if your name is on a secret list that changes every week. Could do a whole episode on the mysteries of that pub. Namaste 🙏
