Hope you guys found this useful. Head over to my IG @themonochromememoirs to see a ton of sample work with this beast of a lens. Obviously I cant cover every aspect in one 15min video so any specific questions for me if you're on the fence about purchasing, just ask. Its a true workhorse!!
It's interesting what you say, but I've been waiting all the time for examples that illustrate what you're saying. I see plenty of pictures on Instagram, but with all kinds of focal lengths. Or where exactly can the 50/1.2-examples be seen?
Hey man! Just wanna say it’s great having you back and rolling out these videos. There’s an honesty and integrity to your channel that’s so rare but needed in the space. It’s funny in a way that your choice of just stopping at that time just seems very aligned with the values and priorities you convey in your videos, and make your channel so unique.
Huge compliment man, sometimes I wish it was easier to run this thing like a business but in all honesty I think im just incapable of bullshit haha.. Will continue to speak my mind and hopefully continue to grow
So refreshing not to suffer from annoying tech specs, staying focus on results, on shooting stories and personal feelings. That's your style and we love it 🙌😁
I have a 1.2 on the way to kick off my first wedding this season. Been practicing with my 1.8 to dial in that focal range and man I’m loving it but cannot wait to see how much more artistic and sharp the 1.2 is! I just have to remember to stop down for groups or use my 24-70 for those.
Great talk. great review. Just launching a video using this lens on a talking head video. Truly is amazing and worth the extra money VS the 1.8. Z ... and sharp at 1.2
Great video. As a photographer myself, it is nice to get the details from another shooter on how they use the lens. That's what made this video better than most. Actual experience and the pros and the cons. This video helped with my decision. Ordered one from B&H after seeing this. Thanks, Bruce.
Nice review. I've had this lens since it came out. Bought it for my portraiture and not for my event photography (because of the size). I love the lens, but have not taken it to events because of the size and weight - I use two Z6II bodies - usually one with the 85 1.8 S and the other with the 35 1.8 S - sometimes I might use the 50 1.8 S and a 24mm 1.8 S. I have been tempted to use the 50 1.2 S at events, but have just not brought myself to do so strictly because of the size/weight issue. For portraiture, I use this lens often and it excels. Yes, Nikon needs to bring out more 1.2's - been waiting (as patiently as possible) for the 85 1.2 S - it is a little annoying that they have literally brought out 3 new 400mm lenses in the time that we have been waiting for the 85 1.2 but c'est la vie I guess. I hope that they make a 35 1.2 as well, and also a 28 1.2. I never really used the 28mm focal length before as I do not like this focal length for portraits and as such I did not have one. I recently got the Z 28mm 2.8 lens and for fun threw it on at a friend's event that I was shooting for fun, and I really liked this focal length for event stuff although 2.8 is really too slow for the dark stuff. I don't really want to get the F mount 28 1.4 as it is expensive and I'd rather spend the money on Z lenses at this point. By the way, and I know you really don't care at all about technical crap, but I thought I'd just mention it for educational purposes. The Z6II does not have 3D tracking. The box you are referring to is the "subject tracking" box - 3D tracking is a different technology and only currently available on the Z9 - I realize that this is largely semantics, and this comment is not meant to be a trolling comment whatsoever - just informative as some might be confused when you discuss 3D tracking with respect to the Z6II. Anyway, love your channel and am glad you are back at it! All the best, -Baron
Excellent video with great info Will. I've seen a lot of really positive reviews of this lens online from various Nikon Z system professional users. Lots of people love this lens. It's great to know that it is working like a champ for you also. As always, thanks for another honest, straight forward, informative, no BS video and again, WELCOME BACK BROTHER!!!
Thanks so much for the excellent video’s and training, so happy to see you making video’s again. I really like how you stick with a system to understand how to get the most out of it, keep things simple and make amazing photo’s that are so special to your clients. It would love to see short video’s where you showcase a great picture(s) and talk about your process both creative and technical. Pick those shots that the clients loved the most, as you referenced in your prior video.
I recently added this lens to the arsenal, and I'm still feeling it out. It's spectacular but I agree with all your comments about who it's for. Also makes a great video lens - I use it for my studio talking head parts and it obliterates the background. You really need to put it on the Z9 to really appreciate the insane focusing and having ISO 64 really helps too. Good vid, first time viewer - love the B&W.
I find it a totally amazing lens, I have downsized on my lens collect since moving to mirrorless, I use this on one of my Z9 and on the second I use the 70-200z lens, so so happy with the overall performance.
Though I am on Sony for a few years now, and gave up on Nikon after being disappointed by the Z6, I appreciate your content and thoughts. And glad to see you here after some long pauses.
Appreciate you making this video. I’m just an amateur photographer, so I hesitated to get this expensive lens, but have been in love with the AI-S F1.2. This video was enough for me to get the z version, and it’s easily my favorite lens. Thanks and wish you best of luck!
Welcome back, I really appreciated your insight and opinions on photography and Nikon gear, both my nikon Z 6 and all my glass got stolen awhile back and I jumped ship to canon, wish you could try the RF 28-70F2 or the RF 85 1.2 , Game Changer Keep up the great work!
Great video and good to see that you are making videos again! I haven't bought a new lens yet for my Nikon Z5. If I had the money, I would consider buying it! I just use the kit lens or the ftz adaptor with my old sigma lenses. Have to use it in manual focusing!
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Except that I just picked up the 28-75 & the 105 2.8... 😆... let's see how it goes. Great video on the 50 1.2... "almost as big and heavy as the 70-200..." ... man that's a huge transition after getting accustomed to the weight of 50/85 1.8 S on a wedding day. My back and shoulders have been singing praises for the weight of those lenses. I don't feel as worn out after shooting all day.
I like the way you talk about your experiences - you are so authentic and convincing, thank's a lot! Two questions. Do you really have enough depth of field by shooting with f/1.2 most of the time? I could image that sometimes not all faces are in focus ... How the Z 50/1.2 compares to the Z 50/1.8 which I have - does it really make such a huge difference?
Thanks for the great comment Markus. In regards to question one the answer is most certainly yes. I was going to do a video on this topic but what you have to remember is the razor thin DOF only really becomes an issue when you get very close to the subject, as soon as you step back and are shooting from around ~6ft away wherever you land your focus point will be in focus. I shoot at 1.2 the majority of the day and only need to pay attention to my DOF is when I get in very close with this lens. Also the 1.2s is very sharp wide open, EXTREMELY sharp at 1.8 to f/4 Second question is that I would say the 50 1.8Z is an incredible lens. Only worthy of an upgrade to the 1.2 if you sincerely need more light frequently. I can justify the cost and extra size because of reception shooting and sometimes poorly lit hotel rooms. Hope this helps!
When I switched to mirrorless I bought a new trinity & this lense. When I compare the amount of shooting I did with each lense and how much money each earned me, I can pretty safely conclude that 2 out of the 3 trinity lenses were kinda wasted. The 50 is so good, it's unbelievable.
Hi Will, I am very happy that you’re back on RUclips. I look forward to watching your next videos! I also own the Nikon Z 50 mm f/1.2. It’s an amazing lens. Its optical quality is stunning. And yeah, when you edit the photos taken with this lens, it’s great! Have you tried to use the Nikon Z9? The autofocus of this camera is just amazing. I also like the fully integrated grip, it’s easier to take photos in portrait mode. I prefer the bank system to the U1 U2 U3 settings as well.
Just in case someone wants to get closer and do "real" macro, you can use macro extension tube for a few bucks. but you need to stop down the lens to keep it sharp. Besides that, thanks for your thoughts. I love your videos
Hey! thank you for this amazing video.. i would like to get your perspective on 50 1.2s vs the 58 1.4 G lens. How do you find the difference and what situation does it works best? Also how is the bokeh compared? Thank you so much for your time and feedback!
Yes lovely to see you back again love all nikon s lenses just wondering how would you compare this lens to the voigtlander 58mm 1.4 which i really enjoy using mind you it's manual focusing only?
you and I were talking about this lens on another video you posted so I went back and watched this one. You mentioned you blast a lot of photos, just curious do you use photo mechanic software for your culling process? That thing shaved hours off my sorting. It doesn’t load the raw file but the jpeg preview you see on the back on your camera allowing you to switch between images WAY after. Then you take what you want to keep and move just the good files into Lightroom. If you’re curious about it let me know. I shoot about 25-30 weddings a year in the Pacific Northwest area.
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs yeah, it’s the best unheard of program out there. That and my Loupedeck+ w/ Lightroom makes editing easy. I think I’m just gonna go ahead and buy this lens though. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting the Z9 and giving my wife our backup z 7ii body thought. Can’t have both lol decisions decisions.
What I've found crazy about the Z lenses is that I'm frequently dialing down the sharpness in Lightroom. With F lenses, I'd more often add sharpness to the images. 🤷♂️ I noticed your monitor in the background, and was wondering what computer you edit with. Maybe you could talk about that in another vid. Great having you back!
Wait til you try a Z9. Night and day difference in AF, coming from a Z6 and Z6ii. Eye-af is so sticky and it’ll focus in the darkest scenarios. Weight sucks ofc so I probably will downgrade to a Z6iii when they add the EXPEED 7 into the lighter bodies.
I wish i could have kept it when i got my z9 but that combo is like 5 lbs or more and hard to fit into a bag. This is why ive transitioned more into the A1 and 50 1.2 GM. Just got the lighter 24-70 GMii and its fabulous. Love the Z9 but ever since selling my Z6ii and 7ii, i do miss the smaller form factor as well.
I probably will go for the Z9 just to keep up with what Nikon is doing but man that Z6ii just works so well it’s hard to justify such a substantial upgrade in cost. Been burning in my brain to pick one up tho for sure
@@davetv8171 Yeah man, form factor plays a bigger role than most people realize when youre lugging cameras around all day. Smaller the better if it works the way you need it
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs i was pretty heavily invested in the z system and no pun intended on the heavy. Since i no longer shoot salsa due to work and not getting paid well, i decided to sell it and use the Sony 50 and their new 70-200. Right now, the 70-200 is the only z lens i have left cause i will put up with the weight when i have to cause its a great combo. Like in your situation on how good the Z 50 1.2 is. I still always think about your video about getting away from free work. It hits so many volumes.
Hey Robert, no BW only weddings but we do shoot in all black and white through the viewfinder to get a better idea of light and shadows in the composition. As far as weddings go, 30-40 a year ususally!
Thanks for the awesome review, you mentioned that you use a 28mm on your other camera, which one is that? The 1.4 E? I m using a 58 1.4g now, is the 1.2 that much better?
Hello, have you ever tried to reproduce the classic look of Kodak's Panatomic X film using the Monochrome setting? I used to shoot with that film quite often back in the day. Thank you
Personally, if I am a wedding photography, should I buy Nikon Z 50 1.2S over 50 1.8S? Now I have Sigma 85 1.4 art but I am going to replace 85 to Nikon Z 50mm. Could you please recommend me Nikon Z 50 1.2S or 50 1.8S? Thank you so much for your response! Nikon Z 50 1.2S, it is the big money. Does it worth over 50 1.8?
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Thank you so much for your response, so I am going to Nikon Z 50 1.2 S over 1.8. Sigma 85 1.4 art is also the great Len but it can't do all things like 50mm on a wedding day or pre wedding.
Great channel and videos! Very helpful content. I’m a Z6ii hobbyist and wished I liked the 50mm FL. As someone who does landscapes, street, nighttime, travel, i dont think the 50 works. 3-D tracking, never used this, actually I don’t remember the Z6ii has this.
Thanks for the video. I had a nightmare with it as I couldn't take a shot without accidentally touching a control ring! Gorgeous rendering and incredibly sharp but I've put the 58 back in my set for weddings. I don't like any of the other z glass, it renders white skin like it has a polariser on. My wife loves her 50 z 1.8 though. My system is a Z9/Z7ii with 20mm 1.8g, 28mm 1.4e, 58mm 1.4g, 105mm 1.4e, 300mm f4pf. If you tell me now that you can completely disable the big ring on the 50mm 1.2 I might replace the 58 and feel stupid for not doing it in the first place.
Dude I hear you. When I first got the beast I was nudging the ring all the time and jacking with my focus by accident. But there is hope! If you update the 50 1.2s firmware to version 1.10 it adds an option to disable the focus ring in the custom settings menu 😎
Hi Will I enjoyed your video. I know you have the Z6ii but just curious if you have the Z50 if you are considering Nikon's new release the Z30? Best wishes Duane
I’m surprised that you use 3D focus tracking, few of my friends even want to try it. Since about 2006 I have used it about 90+% of the time. Not only for studio portraits, model portfolios or weddings but also for using hyper-focal focusing with landscapes.
Yeah I freaking love the setting. Never have focus issues with it and allows me to be super quick. Also don’t usually like to focus on the face because of the over sharpness like I was talking about. So I can pull up the box and lock on to their chest, ez
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs - I refuse to open the aperture fully. A 2.8 lens shooting a portrait outside I set for F-4 or slightly opened more. A while ago after an outside shoot I was at an outside restaurant with a pro working for NYC Education Department. He scoffed that I was using a Nikon 85mm f1.4 not fully open. I turned to a female pro with us and shot her face at f1.4. Her nose was very sharp as I had not hit her near eye and most of her face was out of focus. Funny things happen when goofing with friends. 3D tracking is used by a pro sports guy I know and his shots are brilliant. He said that after focusing on a basketball player, the focus remains tack sharp even if another player gets in the way. An amazing Nikon trick that most don’t even want to try. Someone told me that Canons have a similar feature.
No still love it! that extra 8mm of reach is something special. For weddings though ive come to rely on the 1.2 for more flexibility with the lighting in any situation
Listening carefully when you started talking about AF and strangely you didn't explicitly mentioned the body. Guessing you are using Z6ii. Surprised you "never" miss AF. Is that different from 50 1.8s?
Don't get me wrong as I am a Nikon shooter but I wish it was the size of the Sony 50mm 1.2. I gather the size difference is to control focus breathing for video which isn't a concern to me. Might have to look at the Megadap adapter to get some of that 1.2 goodness in a smaller package.
Hi Sir, I have Nikon Z6 and I'm using 50mm 1.8G with FTZ. While shooting with 1.8 aperture there is slightly blur but with 2.8 aperture fine and getting sharp images. what is problem in it? TIA

I noticed your monitor in the background, and was wondering what computer you edit with.
Great video I hoped if you could show some photos it will make it perfect
Love your work, man
Hi,
Thank you for being here :)
One quick question.
Do you do B&W weddings strictly? If yes, how many per year?
Hey Robert, no BW only weddings but we do shoot in all black and white through the viewfinder to get a better idea of light and shadows in the composition. As far as weddings go, 30-40 a year ususally!
Definitely agree with your thoughts on the move to clinical sharpness. I prefer lenses that are sharp but leave that realism.
Absolutely agree
I've been watching videos on this lens. Thanks for giving it to us real... Have you used the 50 for Video at all?
Can you do a comparison video of the 50 1.2 and the 85 1.2?
Thanks for the awesome review, you mentioned that you use a 28mm on your other camera, which one is that? The 1.4 E? I m using a 58 1.4g now, is the 1.2 that much better?
Great video about this lens and better to not have all the tech chat
Hello, have you ever tried to reproduce the classic look of Kodak's Panatomic X film using the Monochrome setting? I used to shoot with that film quite often back in the day. Thank you
Compared to the new 85 1.2, how do you consider it?
Personally, if I am a wedding photography, should I buy Nikon Z 50 1.2S over 50 1.8S? Now I have Sigma 85 1.4 art but I am going to replace 85 to Nikon Z 50mm. Could you please recommend me Nikon Z 50 1.2S or 50 1.8S? Thank you so much for your response!
Nikon Z 50 1.2S, it is the big money. Does it worth over 50 1.8?
I think so, its a fantastic lens and very useful at 1.2 on a wedding. Just make sure you can handle the weight all day so id rent one first
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Thank you so much for your response, so I am going to Nikon Z 50 1.2 S over 1.8.
Will probably do a vid on this tomorrow to let the rest of the community know, thanks for reminding me 🫡
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs MFer! Now I have to buy it again... 🤣
I still can't turn this F*****G focus ring off! 😪
Hi Will
I enjoyed your video. I know you have the Z6ii but just curious if you have the Z50 if you are considering Nikon's new release the Z30?
Best wishes
Duane
Any thoughts on the 85mm 1.2 S?
My guy!!!!! Wassup bro!!
AYEEEE BUDDY!
Have you retired your 58mm? I got the lens partly due to your video last time.
No still love it! that extra 8mm of reach is something special. For weddings though ive come to rely on the 1.2 for more flexibility with the lighting in any situation
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Ohh good to know! Cheers man~ looking forward to more videos from you.
Great review.
I'm waiting for the native 35 1.2 and 85 1.2 (this year probably).
Thank you for this video, but I would’ve preferred that you intercut examples of your work with this lens.
Excellent video, maybe this will be my next investment. Have you got some sample photos please?
With your willingness to use a high iso, do you use Auto ISO and just set the “max” and “min” in the menu?
Listening carefully when you started talking about AF and strangely you didn't explicitly mentioned the body. Guessing you are using Z6ii. Surprised you "never" miss AF. Is that different from 50 1.8s?
Don't get me wrong as I am a Nikon shooter but I wish it was the size of the Sony 50mm 1.2. I gather the size difference is to control focus breathing for video which isn't a concern to me. Might have to look at the Megadap adapter to get some of that 1.2 goodness in a smaller package.
Totally agree I wish they made it into a smaller form factor haha, thing is HEAVY and I def feel it after an 8 hour wedding
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs good thing you lift weights!
i want to use it both video and photography for video what is your take and can you add some samples ? it's would be better i think ...
My Canon RF 50 1.2 has his own camo vest and box of .308 rounds.
Haha shit man I might switch to canon now
Is it really that different from the 50 1.8z? In practical terms?
Definitley yes, the IQ is really really good and it makes the editing truly way easier. The size is a hurdle but the 1.2 is worth it
Are you still using two z6ii bodies?
Can't decide 50 1.2 or 85 1.2 on a Z9
and you use the 50 mm 1.2 S ..wide open all the time??
Yessir all the time!
Long time, no see
Yup!
Hi Sir,
I have Nikon Z6 and I'm using 50mm 1.8G with FTZ. While shooting with 1.8 aperture there is slightly blur but with 2.8 aperture fine and getting sharp images. what is problem in it?
TIA
Great overview on this lens ..Thanks for the tips and you real world feedback on it!
About the use of the flash during an event , how do you manage to find the right setting in a challenging environment ?
I struggle with the idea of keep changing setting over an over again..is there like a rule of thumb or starting point in its set up ?
Thank You for your help man!!
I want this lens
💯
This lens seems to be a bit like you- I know when you put out a new video I´m gonna like it. :)
Can't afford it. I use a ttartisan 90mm 1.25 $490. Great images I get from it
