  • The Chinese writing system is composed of lots of little building blocks. In this lesson from Skritter, Fiona 老师 shares here favorite characters known as 三叠字 [三疊字] which translates as three-duplicate-characters. For example, the character 品 is made up of three 口, and the character for a forest is just 3 woods (木 x 3 = 森).
Learn the etymology and reasoning behind some of these characters - You see them a lot in shop signs, restaurants and business names.
    森,品,龘,猋,驫,鱻,鑫,淼,垚,焱

警 (jǐng for police, alarm) was one of my favorites early on since it looks complicated to an uninitiated newbie, but very neatly breaks up into simple components 艹,句, 攵,言 grass radical + wrapped mouth -> sentence = using flowery words to ‘revere’ the police officer talking respectfully with him to get out of a speeding ticket, but the stern taskmaster ‘knocks’ you over the head with his billy club, and then says these ‘words’ with a booming voice... you are under arrest! Or some story like that ;-)
But like Fiona I also liked the simple duplication of characters a lot, like 众 or 晶

Love your kitty! Same color and as laid back as my Leela, except Leela has long, thick orange hair, (which seems to coat everything in my apartment, but that’s something else). 四 things about Leela, my nutty 小 猫; She’s extremely loving, seems to enjoy, if not understand, me speaking Chinese to her (especially 我爱你!), she LOVES “helping” me when I practice 书法 and
山水画, and last but not least; she’s trained to help me. I’m older and disabled and if I fall, she’ll bring me my phone, she can also bring me my medicine. The best thing though has certainly been learning this beautiful language, practicing it on her and watching her reaction. It makes me wonder if she was a kitty in Taiwan or the mainland in a previous life. 😸. When I’m away at one of my frequent trips to the local hospital, the nurses love watching as I use our 2-way “Security” camera-kinda like FaceTiming with my kitty, and speak to her in chinese. You can hear her purring when I tell her 我爱你 and she rubs up against the camera! I’m usually only there for a day or so and when I say “妈妈很快就会回来的!”, she starts going in circles, whispering “Miao” ! 😊. (Yes, my Leela Whispers, especially at night, when she’s being loving or when other people are around)

Thanks for such an interesting video! I will be honest in that I am perhaps highly biased by things that come in threes as I am one of triplets. One 三曡字 that I came across recently is 轟, although in it's simplified form it is not in this category. I would have to think long and hard to get an all-time favourite character, however in traditional form I always think 義,寧 and 愛 are beautiful.

For 三叠字 there's also 众 (zhong), 3 人s, meaning "a lot, crowd"

I remember running into 淼 as a character name in 《三体》, threw me off for a bit thinking it was 森. One of my favorite characters is 年 because it looks so unique and elegant

Yes that character doesn't appear in the dictionary, and some say it was created by a noodle restaurant since it sounds like the noise when eating noodles!
