There are always two definitions to what we define as art, or maybe anything but more than the ability to prove something as not we have the ability to accept the potential of art, which in turn leads to the objective, and subjective definitions of art, So, even though you might not think this can be art, objectively we have to be able accept its potential to be art, because other people would argue it is. I LOVE THIS GUY.I think he is brilliant. Its puzzling to think that art is something else.
maybe he isn't after innovation.. I dont know, i see what you're saying, but i feel like revisiting these simple principals of physics or whatever it might be, is worth an exploration.. especially if you want to see something happen.. this guy is just experimenting which I love.
Well, no, I would not agree. I am not certain you are wrong, but I frankly haven't considered the piece enough to make a judgement of my own. My question was more why would you think that your particular view on this piece of art is the only acceptable one? Do you really know and understand enough about art and its history to make such a statement with such confidence?
Because I know. See? I could say the Flying Spaghetti Monster told me, but I prefer to say everyone with a clear and critical mind can see that. Don't you?
Every piece of art Chris Burden has produced was a first, never before. If you don't understand art, you should either try harder or leave it alone. Your critique is childishly subjective. Do you know what conceptual art is? Do you really understand how insanely difficult and complex this piece is? That 12 ton machine flies a few feet off the ground for several minutes, pivoting off a 36 ton retractable counter balance, gently lands and eventually comes to rest. Where have you seen this before?
@@RadTradXShe's not relevant. Whether you think she's a Satanist or not it has nothing to do with Chris Burden and post-modern art. This is coming from a fellow traditionalist. The point of all art is to provoke thought and emotion. To say something. To limit what art can and can't be is demonstrative.
Professional or institutional statements are not the issue, there is no official standpoint. But, yes, I am teaching communication and design. Art has to see, find and show us new points of view, and in our time, where we have seen everything, art shouldn't bore us, shouldn't talk to us in below the expectance horizont level. Art has to make a thesis, show us experiences we don't already know and push the envelope of our world. And that flying steamroller doesn't do anything of the above.
no, it’s not a matter of beauty but of originality. every piece of art should be a first, a never-before. and that steamroller does not provoke one thought, we all have seen alikes before, we can imagine all that, our reality has changed. once virtual reality was invented there is no necessitiy for this kind of art, the kind that tries to awe us, to impress and provoke thoughtfulness. … but I come to think that there is no way change someones mind concerning art, so lets leave it at that …
i don't need to see it (by some artist), i can imagine it, i have seen that in dozens of movies, virtual reality, special effects performances. worst thing with this thing is: it doesnt do anything new to my mind. what if the artist would have to try harder to do something original? but i don't want to repat myself so just stay happy and keep admiring everything some gallerist or art promoter throws at the public to make money

FULL OF WIN. Burdon just keeps getting better.
Wonder if you'd have similar criticism of the work of John Baldessari or Vito Acconci?
Art is how we outrun them.
This is amazing!
I was the sad muppet that stood there and watched it!!! You had a choice to switch off ;-) Welcome to the Sad Muppet Club.
This is Chelsea school of art and design, not the South London Gallery

And there has to be a difference? Why?
YES!
or maybe you're too closed-minded to understand what he's trying to say. what is art to you? michaelangelo and picasso paintings?
And you would know because???
that is not the question in question
=)

i think it's facking genius.
I have a job, I reply to dumb comments.
I would rather watch a giant Victorian steam engine working, just a functional machine with no pretence to being art.
BOB The Builder!!!!
hahahahaha that's crazy!!! and looks pretty funny xD
oh, now i understand. you're a designer, not an artist. so just because its not formally beautiful it's not art. gotcha.
