Kimono used to be the casual clothes of the old Japanese people. It seems that the appropriation of culture is a hot topic overseas. Many Japanese people have no aversion to having people from any country wear kimonos. I hope you enjoy Japan.
Beautiful. You look fantastic in your kimono. Very respectful and smart with your hair tied up to the side. I feel confident the Japanese locals would enjoy seeing you walking through Kyoto in their traditional costume. Good experience and a great photographic souvenir.
Alina, you really look beautiful in that kimono! Reminds me of a world long since vanished, fragile, slow paced and full of ritual which the Lady Murasaki describes in the oldest novel in Japan, The Tale of Gengi. Heiian society is now remote in time and it can still be said our world has more need of tradition and not less! Loved the episode and your tribute is appreciated to a part of Japanese life and culture few outsiders see. Well done! 😊
Lovely video, Alina! This kimono has transformed you into a very elegant Queen! (Not that you were not before 😂) What an experience and beautiful photos, lovely choice of color! Definitely suits the spring season xxx I think the “wHiT3” people who said it’s a cultural appropriation must see it from another perspective, that it is actually a cultural appreciation!
Personally speaking, I don't consider wearing a country's traditional attire respectfully as cultural appropriation. I once dressed up in an Emarati Kandora (traditional men's attire) in Dubai , and it gave me a better understanding and appreciation for the local culture. You presented a key aspect of Japanese culture (traditional attire) with beauty and grace, and l look forward to the next one :)
"cultural appropriation" is something that could only happen in USA. For Polish people like me it's total madness what kind of problems westerners do have. Same with political correctness. They just make new problems probably from boredom. xD Drink kwas chlebowy, piwo, or wódka and eat kiełbasa and pierogi. And what's most important be honest. Even if that will "hurt somebody's feelings". xD Truth straight between the eyes! Blunt and brutal. That's the way of Slavs, which means People of Word. Polish, Check, Slovenian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Russian. We will understand each other to some extent without even learning our languages. Cheers!
Well, you choose a stunning kimono and I tend to agree that Kyoto is the place to do it. Since you choose a very colourful kimono there is no way you are going fade into the background. Most of the Japanese people I've met are not in the least offended by a foreigner wearing traditional Japanese dress. I'm sure you could find some Japanese who wouldn't feel that way, but the majority of the complaints probably come from the perpetually offended non Japanese group. Those who claim they are offended for the Japanese people, without the involvement or permission of Japanese people. I'm happy that you got to walk through the historic district streets where the scenery complemented your look. I know when I went to that shrine just climbing all the stairs was an effort. Doing that in Kimono with limitations in movement, props for that, and chaffing be damned. Interesting video and I'm glad that you enjoyed the experience. I know I enjoyed watching you have it.
This comment is spot on: "Those who claim they are offended for the Japanese people, without the involvement or permission of Japanese people." As a Japanese American born in the U.S. with relatives n Japan, I've never once heard Japanese people being offended by kimono wearing, it's actually the opposite. And also this "perpetually offended non Japanese group" are the same people who like to "stick up" for other races who didn't ask for it.
Thanks you so much for this remarkable video today’s from Southeast Asia in Tokyo, Japan this weekend in April of 2023.I am looking forward for your next video from Tokyo, Japan in 2023❤❤❤
Hello Alina! 😄🙏👋🌟 I hope your having a fantastic day! This is a marvelous magnificent video! 😁👍❤️👏📹🇯🇵👘🌸🥇💯💫✨🌟 You look so wonderful in the Kimono dress Alina! It’s absolutely beautiful! The Temple of Kiyomizu dera looks really amazing! Thank you so much Alina to share with us this super excellent video. You are the best and greatest world traveler adventurer! 😃👍👏✈️🌎📹🥇💯🏆💫🌟 I wish you Alina a wonderful marvelous glorious blessed day. Have a fantastic time in Japan! 😊🙏❤️👋🇯🇵👍✨🌟
This video is really amazing! As someone who has always been fascinated by Japanese culture, I can't wait to experience this and learn more about the etiquette around wearing a kimono as a tourist by myself. It's great to hear that you consulted with locals and foreign friends to get a well-rounded perspective on the topic. And what a perfect setting to do a kimono photoshoot in - Kyoto is truly the cultural heart of Japan.
I am 60 years old Japanese. In Japan, I don't think most people have such an idea about cultural promotion. Most of them would rather welcome it. I hope you can enjoy what you want to do more and more without worrying about it. GOOD!
What a lovely kimono, and it suited you very well. Thank you for directly addressing the cultural appropriation question. I think it is an important one to consider, and you do such a great job of showing respect to all cultures.
Hello Alina! You wore Kimono beautifully and I don't think it gives any disrespect to wear it in Japan; on the contrary Japanese people should be proud to see that even foreigners wear it as a sign of great respect towards this awesome country. Thank you very much for this nice video.
When I lived in Korea I dressed in a traditional Hanbok for a celebration at the school, which was not my doing, the owners and other teachers wanted me to. It seemed like everyone appreciated that I wore the traditional dress as many of the parents, children and other teachers also wore it, and I think it would have been weirder and almost more disrespectful if I didn't wear it. It was lovely and I really enjoyed it.
as an asian i never understand the concept of cultural appropriation. should i feel bad every day when i put on my suit and tie to work as it is a western costume? am i a bad guy now cause i am not wearing cloths that are not come from my culture? thats very confusing🙄
Random Japanese here. I've been wearing kimonos for quite some time, my mother is a kimono teacher, and with the two of us combined we have...well, TONS of kimonos and obis. Hey, they are beautiful, you can't blame us! As a Japanese and kimono lover, I would appreciate anyone who loves and enjoys wearing them, the nationality/race doesn't matter. It makes me quite happy in fact.
I love the kimono on you! It's all worth the work and patience dressing up! Made me happy when I saw you were happy. ❤ I'm planning to have this experience ❤
Kimono is a compilation of techniques on textiles, dyeing, and weavings for a long time. This is recyclable wear as private property, just allowed for women, from generation to generation in old days. Wearing actual costumes is not only to know the sense of beauty but function itself. Thank you for your deep understanding them. Nowadays fashion industries in Japan are supported by those fabric technics.😃🙂😊💗💙💛
No matter what your nationality and ethnicity you are, l would be happy to see people wear kimono. Kimono is not only for Japanese but for all people who like it.
"You look very beautiful and perfect in a kimono. I can imagine it must be difficult to walk among the crowds while wearing it. Thank you for sharing the lovely video."
🙂👍Thanks, Alina...! Now that you have donned this beautiful Kimono....you should also get dressed in a Hanbok and then in a Qipao....sometime in the future (if you are able to do so) to show us the traditional costume differences. I think people would love to see that....! 😐
Alina my friend I enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing the culture and you willing to be part of. You looked so beautiful in kimono. I love these kind of videos.
I’m coming back to this video. I did the kimono rental experience through the Air BnB link from this video. It was amazing, and I can recommend it enough. Bruno remembers Alina well, and he asked to pass along in the comments a huge thank you! 🙏🏻
I am 60 years old Japanese. I don't think most people in Niton have the idea of cultural promotion. Most of them would rather welcome it. I hope you can enjoy what you want to do more and more without worrying about it. GOOD!
Absolutelu amazing Kimono!! I have travelled to Japan couple of times and will be going to Kyoto next year, will surely try one, something comfortable for elderly males ( I m more than 62 now 😂 ). I found Yakutas very comfortable. Enjoy and thanks for great videos.
As long as one is respectful, there is no problem with one wearing a Kimono or any other cultural piece of clothing. Cultural appropriation is a concept that is very bad for human society and I hope it will fade into the dustbin of history. All it accomplishes is to segregate cultures and limit freedom of speech and expression. I think if one wears the clothing of another culture to make fun of them or act out an offensive or dated stereotype this wrong and not okay. But if it’s done with love and respect there’s nothing wrong with that. :) Happy Easter to you & the entire McLeod family, Alina! 🐣🐇🐰Much respect for the land of endless discovery, Japan! 🇯🇵
Alina,Thanks you so much for this remarkable video from Tokyo, Japan this weekend in April of 2023.I really LOVE your great Japanese dress calls “Kimono Dress” in Southeast Asia 2023❤❤❤
You became an elegant lady by wearing beautiful kimono. Don't worry about cultural issue. Probably kimono is actually delightful with an elegant lady like you. Anyway, it is definitely worth of wearing even though it is hard to wear and move.
Ofc it is okay for tourists to wear kimono. It supports the tourism industry, helps tradition and culture to stay alive and makes both locals and guests happy. Everybody in the world use, wear, do, listen to and/or watch things that originally come from a different part of the globe. It is called life and civilization.
Hi, i enjoyed this Video. We are happy to see a foreign woman wearing Kimono. Especially western people are usually taller than us so they are outstanding and their blond hair is eye-catching. Hello Alina,
my thoughts at the end of the video: Too bad this is all of the kimono experience.
What a difference to the „Agent Alina“ coat 👍🏻 🙂

Nice design of clothes
What month did you go? Planning to go this December. I’m wondering how cold it can get. I live in Illinois.
Gogeous! I'm stunned.

But some Western wear the upper dress not lower pants & show nake for lower part. It disgusting & unrespect. I have no problems with being creative & sexy, but some ppl trying to hard to being sexy - even wear traditional costume. This is bullshit
I think all Asian ppl very welcome to foreigners or Western wear their homeland traditional dress.

Ancient city, much history!#
Wow so pretty and beautiful
WOW with kimono you are so beautyful, 😊
Far too much fixation on cultural appropriation., as long as its respectful, there is no harm. You look stunning in it especially with your choice of vibrant colours!
excellent video
You look abusolutely beautiful in the kimono you chose. It does match with your eyes and hair color of which some Japanese girls would feel envy as they have black or brown eyes and hair. Honestly Japanese are very happy to see people from abroad wearing Kimono. I am happy you did have a good time here in Japan.
Seems like you have been mummyfied in preparation for the Japanese afterlife! Beautiful pattern and colour guaranteed to get you noticed, how would the reaction be in moose jaw sask?😊✌️♥️🇬🇧 much love
I think that because of the strong impact that anime and manga have had in the lives of many people around the world they have grown a strong admiration and appreciation for Japan that have made them overprotective of Japan. I have even read people from outside Japan say that if North Korea ever attacks Japan they will go and fight to protect Japan.
You are beautiful. I like you traveling in around Asia. It’s from Mongolia.
So beautiful Alina you look same Japan 😊
Depends on the context....and depends on the execution.
Very cute in kimono😊 ❤
