Almost 4 years old - only 148k views? One of the most underrated creations on RUclips. I think RUclips needs to repost this as a trending video. I've been making a point to re-watch this series once a year.
More depressing is that it's been here a decade and still on 220K :/ This is legit one of the best documentary series on videogames that I ever saw, and I've been watching videogame videos since Bad Influence. Such a shame it never got the reach it deserved.
I'm really glad this was made. there are so many great composers that will never get their rise to fame, but are remembered fondly for introducing us to so many memorable melodies. I can bet that there are more people who know the Mario theme than there are people who know Beethoven 5th
Thankyou so much for this series RBM! These guys formed my life as a musician, and its incredible to finally see the faces behind the names and the tech they struggled with. Fascinating.
Red Bull Music Academy We need a Digging in the Carts Pt. 2 please. This was such an awesome series. At least put this on a physical format. Would love to have it.
for some reason this is like the beginning of electronic music as we all know it as in having a Nes with a 2A03 chip in your very own home or having an arcade with a sound chip in itself in many ways this is the beginning of electronic music for all of us
the first time I watched this I was really just fascinated and ever since then after learning more about synth and keyboards and samplers and electronic music in general I'm starting to understand more it really is its own culture and language in an of itself
I loved this. Who knew Red Bull would turn out to be such a big supporter of music. My only criticism - where's Koji Kondo (Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Star Fox)? Even if you weren't able to get him for an interview, he's pretty important.
This is awesome. Thanks to the Back In My Play and 8-4 Play guys for bringing this to my attention. One day this video will get over a million views that it deserves.
This is very interesting, great video. Just wish they listed what games the songs they played were from. I love finding new games, especially if they have awesome music.
Spanish subtitles require time correction from "Mi nombre es Hirokazu Tanaka. " onwards, this line is starting in 10:34 but should start on 10:24 instead, my guess is the times of the following lines should be the same in the Spanish transcription as in the English one.
Technically, Japan's biggest musical export to the world are electronic musical instruments, e.g. Roland drum machines like the TR-808 and TR-909, synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7 and Roland TB-303, turntables like the Panasonic Technics, etc. But in terms of actual musical compositions, I think it's safe to say that video game music are indeed Japan's biggest musical export.
I asked it to my game-nerd friend, who is very familiar with early NES era music, but even he does not know it. He guessed it that Nintendo did not allow to use their (and Tanaka's) music in this film, so Tanaka (he's already left Nintendo) made another music for this which sounds like early NES music.
If anyone is looking for the intro theme this you can find it on sound cloud. soundcloud.com/daisuketanabe They have it incorrectly titled as Tappy on the credits.
Did you ever happen to find out? I know the intro has a different version for each episode, but they're all really good and I'd very much like a name or atleast artist.
so it's actually from this Japanese VGM composer called TAPPY. We couldn't clear any of Tanaka's music from Nintendo so we got TAPPY to compose for us in a vintage Tanaka-style

This channel has so many hidden gems
Trending is a virus!
yesss to YT reposting as a trending video!!!!
More depressing is that it's been here a decade and still on 220K :/

3:28 - this has more snares and Tom hits, but if you search it on RUclips, it’s very FEW snare and Tom hits…
god bless you!
Thanks a lot for this!
I just wish I could find Tappy songs anywhere in the web
10:08 reminds me of the Gyromite tracks
Wow this is fantastic! Thanks for the introduction

Fascinating.
This series is terrific! Great interviews, great video, great memories.... and great music!

The music that made the most of my childhood, and still makes the most of me today..
I want to thank you so much for this documentary! You've given me so much to talk about in my uni research paper this year :3
Waveforms are so cool.
I’d pay anything for a synth with the original Namco waves in them.
They sound so nice.
Hirokazu Tanaka along with Keiichi Suzuki composed the soundtrack of my favorite Nintendo series, Mother / Earthbound.
They were genious back then.
for some reason
this is like the beginning of electronic music as we all know it
as in having a Nes with a 2A03 chip in your very own home

I loved this, please do more Diggin' in the Carts!
one of the best gaming documentaries, ever.
J Rocc's record collection is next level
Amazing series! Loved the first episode and can't wait for the second one later today. Thanks for this great project, RBMA :)
I watched this years ago on vimeo I believe. Did not know Red Bull made it. Energy drinks are so random LOL!
This. Is. Awesome. I wish each episode were an hour.
I got chills.
Need another Diggin in the carts series.
I loved this. Who knew Red Bull would turn out to be such a big supporter of music. My only criticism - where's Koji Kondo (Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Star Fox)? Even if you weren't able to get him for an interview, he's pretty important.
They also didn't get Taki Tekashi composer of Mega Man 2 or even Masato Nakuramura Sonic 1 and 2 composer.
Does anyone know the 10:08 game and track name PLEASE?
This sounds original one...
Legally distinct sound-alike to Wrecking Crew.
Tanaka-esque Style Melody by Tappy (like Wrecking Crew - Golden Hammer)
Thanks Nick for the Music Tip and link to this
Brilliantly made documentary on a niche subject. Cheers!
This is a pretty cool documentary. I think I'll continue on to the next part...
This is awesome. Thanks to the Back In My Play and 8-4 Play guys for bringing this to my attention. One day this video will get over a million views that it deserves.

I've been trying to figure it out too!
lionheart1827 would also like to know :3
Duran Duran - Sandstorm
It is a legally distinct sound-alike to the China stage from Super Mario Land. The same was done earlier in the video with a Wrecking Crew-like track.
Tanaka-esque Style Melody by Tappy (like Super Mario Land - Chai Kingdom)
thx for showing my childhood heroes :D
Why are subtitles are not available on mobile?
Spanish subtitles require time correction from "Mi nombre es Hirokazu Tanaka. " onwards, this line is starting in 10:34 but should start on 10:24 instead, my guess is the times of the following lines should be the same in the Spanish transcription as in the English one.
This is awesome.
Japan is a nation-- (internet died)
And now I know what a Japan is.
Internet came back, I'll watch the rest now.

What’s the song at 12:54
so it's actually from this Japanese VGM composer called TAPPY. We couldn't clear any of Tanaka's music from Nintendo so we got TAPPY to compose for us in a vintage Tanaka-style
Got here from Trainer Tips.
Superbe !
I know that ChipTanaka is a maestro of the video game music industry. But they should have featured Koji Kondo as well.
