- The former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani pleaded guilty to bank and tax fraud Wednesday in a sports betting case where prosecutors allege he stole $16 million from the Japanese baseball player to pay off debts. The scandal surrounding Ippei Mizuhara shocked baseball fans from the U.S. to Japan when the news broke in March. He was initially charged with one count of bank fraud, which carries a potential 30-year prison sentence.
Mizuhara exploited his personal and professional relationship with Ohtani to plunder millions from the two-way player’s account for years, at times impersonating Ohtani to bankers, prosecutors said.

Traitor. Give him 50 years
It’s really sad that Ohtani is still getting so many mean comments and “bet” joke. What else haters need to prove his innocence?
Bet there's still some who thinks Mizuhara is taking the fall for Ohtani.
"Agreed to plead guilty" Wonder how much he got paid?

I'm baffled about this story. I don't see how he was able to get away with gambling for any length of time because for those of you that may not know this gambling is actually illegal in Japan. The fact that he had to wait and come to a foreign country to gamble in the first place should have told him that at some point he's going to get caught doing it here too.
You mean gambling is "illegal" like how Japan has a thriving pachiko and horse racing betting industry which is literally gambling?
@@nanaholic01 Yes. But obviously ways around it. Cops will sit outside gambling halls waiting for people to come outside with, 'winner chips'. This was / is how you got paid your winnings. The proof that you were gambling was IF you got caught with or walking TO, the cashier's booth around the corner from the gambling hall.
@@manuellubian5709 I actually live in Japan and the point is *certain* forms of gambling is completely legal in Japan, and that gambling addicts absolutely exists in Japan. As said originally pachinko is legal and so is horse racing which you can bet online. One only has to go past a pachinko parlour in the morning to see people lining up before opening time waiting to get inside to get their gambling fix would tell you there’s nothing impossible or even improbable about someone having a gambling addiction when living in Japan.
Don't drop the soap
I’m calling bullcrap. It’s a coverup. He is the fall guy.
“Interpreting voice” - what a joke
Let's see if you're smart enough to prove the federal investigators wrong.
whats so hard to believe? he had to be around ohtani all the time but not really translating all the time. so a lot of down time, including games and practices. he gambled to pass time and got addicted.
@@joemama99 first the amount of money involved. I guess Ohtani allows millions to leave his account, and he doesn’t notice?
Second the interpreting voice claim
Third a betting scandal is not good business for the MLB. Their viewership is declining every year
