Listening to many SWAC bands is like someone screaming or yelling their way through the National Anthem (see ruclips.net/video/u7nFOgisvPs/видео.html). At the National BOTB this year it was hard for myself and others to try and understand what those SWAC bands were even playing. Lastly they say they have a brassy sound. It's amazing that it's been 4 decades. I marched from 1977 to 1981 and seeing this warm-up bring back all the excitement and feelings of playing. I even remember where I was standing playing tuba. Wow!

Famu sounds AMAZING!!! I do think a distinction needs to be made from concert band vs. marching band in it’s intent. I happen to believe FAMU is one of the best to do it in terms of a concert band sound but marching band (to me) is just a different mindset, particularly in the HBCU world. I really do appreciate FAMU’s professionalism!!!
The difference is that the majority of these students are music majors and have a musical background of music theory and experience. That’s what holds them apart from other collegiate bands. They are then able to put a lot more concentration on marching and field performances.
Quite the opposite. Most of us were non music majors. We couldn't be in the marching band if you were not in one of the ensembles the prior spring semester.
In the 60’s FAMU band was then accepting females into the marching band. With my background in music and band I wanted to audition but at that time you had to be a music major to be considered. I guess Times have changed. They are still the best outstanding band in music and marching. So much class!
