I am actually Canadian. Living in Halifax Nova Scotia. I could be wrong but I believe the song is about a past relationship and the singer is using metaphors to describe how it made him feel.

Heard this old favorite of mine at the automechanics today, that launched me into grieving an old friend. Her early life experiences wedged deep abandonment issues that played out as string of short-term relationships where she cheated, which she identified as strategies to not get left behind. When the love of her life entered the scene sealing all exit strategies (she fell in love, with the capital "L"), the need to mend the wounds of her early life became a necessity for the survival of her spirit and her relationship. She didn't make it. With recurrences of the cancer in her body, she knew that she was still struggling with deep insecurities stemming from early childhood. The thing about falling in love entering a deeper connection is that you can't get by on external charms, can't fake your bluff for too long. What a great song, this old favorite of mine, that I couldn't swallow the tears back down in a public place.

Lots of people saying this song isnt about a gambler. Actually, this song IS specifically about a gambler.
Its not about a woman or any one specific person in Bob's life, but a specific type of person; charming, charismatic, yet a total self indulged p.o.s.
Look it up, Bob says it himself in interviews. I hate how people speak so as-a-matter-of-fact about things that theyre completely wrong about.
But at the same time, music is art, and art is to be left open for interpretation. That's why most artists try to be vague with their wording.
Therefore, the song is about whatever you want it to be about. This song is yours. Because a song is a gift to the world.
It's always reminded me of my absent father who was too busy running the streets dealing drugs and being in and out of prison than to be a good person and father.
The words are very fitting for my situation too, even the gambling part. A risk is considered a gamble. He risked losing his life and family over drugs and money, and he did just that.
Now he's sitting on his death bed alone full of regret. Even in death he will be still the same.

This song always takes me back to a party I was invited to in 1987. The hosts had rented a large banquet room at a local Atlanta Hotel. I did not know it at the time but my old GF who cheated on me almost 6 years before wanted to talk. Basically, I was set up. She got to the room before I did. I was not seeing anybody at the time and some well-meaning friends were trying to get me to talk to her. I walked toward her and about the time I was within earshot I started humming this song as I walked out of the room. To this day I don't have much to do with any of that bunch!

So much style in this song. I know it since my childhood, but i didn't know the lyrics, English isn't my mother tongue. But ist's such a cool language, and now i can also understand the lyrics. Everything ist great about this song, a truly perfect song, a masterpiece! Thank you, Bob Seger! From 🇦🇹

I agree with Ben Lapke. It's a song about playing people. However, most people assume it's about a girlfriend when in fact, it's about all of us. It's about mistakes. And, it's about regrets or the lack of regrets. Bob's other song "like a rock" is another reminder of what life offers and what we choose. And, both songs have the same perspective of life in our youth and the results we all share later in life. Is it only me, or does anyone else considers age creates what is described in the Bible: "mighty men of old, men of renown" of Genesis 6: 4 fame? Just asking. Or, did Bob stumble onto the wisdom his lyrics convey. That he prematurely understood the spiritual aspects all men feel later in life.
I ask for one reason alone. His music and the lyrics applied suggests we are born with talents only a strong young man is equipped to master. That his destiny is based on his cunning and determination. Yet, he is young and without the proper wisdom to achieve his goals. Or, that is the result for much of us yet a few do better than others while running against the wind. And, he offers the true feelings one can only ascertain later in their later years sitting by their fireplace. It is my opinion that his lyrics may appear basic and trite, when in fact the words offer overwhelming meanings in many areas of human thought and feelings. And, that is the magic only a few songwriters use to bring us together with common understanding.

I love this song, but for some odd reason it always reminds me of Tina Turner. I can imagine in my head, her dancing around like she's stomping on cockroaches, not to take anything away from Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. It's a remarkable song that paints an extremely detailed picture of a very specific person. Who that is, is entirely up to you.
