Pretty bloody pretentious to say "go back to Malick, go back to Lynch..." One of Robbie Collin's favourite films is There Will be Blood, a film that by P.T. Anderson's own admission owes a lot to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. So maybe Collin should go back to Huston? Just because a film is influenced by other movies doesn't mean you have to love the film's influences more than the film itself. Blech.

Exactly! And Collins is completely ignoring the vast majority of viewers with this kind of criticism. Most people will either enjoy the film because they loved the films that influenced it, or they will be unaware of its influences.

I find Bowman irksome. I remember her film reviews on Radio 1. I used to scream at the radio as she blundered her way through. There's nothing worse than someone pretending to be knowledgeable when they're not. At least Simon Mayo doesn't pretend. He accepts that he's nowhere near as knowledgeable as Kermode about films but he's happy with that.

Jimmy Twotimes I like that she comments as well. there are moments when I wish Simon Mayo would just tell Mark that he's just wrong, but he never watches the movies so he can't.

***** I have no problem with her having an opinion. It's just woefully misinformed. That's not to say I agree with Robbie Collins all the time either. He has more than a whiff of hipster about him. I can imagine him snorting into his latte with his beard stroking friends, as he recounts how inept Bowman's hollow observations are.

Jimmy Twotimes The problem is she talks too much without really having anything interesting to say. I would rather hear Robbie, a professional film critic, talk for an extra 2 minutes than hear her opinion on Lost River from a person who by her own words says she has a lack of film knowledge

not sure Edith said "as well" enough times at the end there

This illustrates perfectly why I can't stand Edith Bowman when she is on the show. Asking if Robbie Collin would've liked it if he hadn't known it was directed by Gosling is an idiotic comment and insulting to a guy who is a very solid and honest film critic. Perhaps she should be asked if she'd like the film if it wasn't directed by Gosling, that might be a more revealing answer. She is like nails down a blackboard to me.

I thought it was pretty good, not great. Ben Mendelsohn reminded me a little of Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet - the performances were all fine I thought. The vivid colours absolutely reminded me of Only God Forgives [which, incidentally, I really didn't like at all] and some scenes at the nightclub had a Twin Peaks vibe. I went into this knowing very little about it [I actually had no idea about the reviews it had been getting] - as I was watching it I was kind of with it for a while but I don't think it will stay with me for very long.
The problem for me is that the script isn't good enough, there are many conversations that just go nowhere. I got completely what Ryan Gosling wanted to do and say with this and it's a decent stab.
There's a Beasts of the Southern Wild influence all over this too but where that film was, I think, more confident in it's mythical/fairy tale imagery Lost River kind of shies away from giving you a real sense of the kid's point of view of the world.
The soundtrack does most of the work, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think there is potential for Gosling to make something great.
    :)

I've seen several critics making this complaint that the film borrows in spades. Most of the characters are scavengers living in a city made up of broken bits and pieces of buildings. I can't help thinking there's something intentional going on there.

this guy seems to passionately hate this movie. I'm a fan of all the people you say he was inspired by and that is probably WHY I loved this film.

Yet another interesting feature that Mark hasn't reviewed, can't he review these kind of films on his blog after he comes back? This is the latest of quite a few that I think he can really get his teeth into

I don't agree with this guy at all. I find his reasons really strange and irrelevant. To say "oh this image is a rip off of this film. and this image is a rip off of this film" is just kinda stupid.
Modern film reviewers are so backed up on their catalogue of films they have seen, that they can no longer just appreciate a film for what it is.
Instead of seeing and appreciating a beautiful image of a burning house, heightened by the context of the story, they simply see a director trying to replicate a shot from another film.
Its like someone picking a date out of a large crowd of people. No, get to know each person individually.

I agree. I also feel that this comment completely ignores the vast majority of viewers who will either not be bothered by Gosling’s cribbing from his influences or even necessarily be aware of them.

The club is a modern version of Grand Guignol. It's really not so fantastic of a version of Detroit...except none of the stars are black.
