I would love to see a comparison of Split Eq with the (now free) Ozone 11 EQ which also has a similar transient control function. I have the Ozone and like it, but the effect seems "subtle", i.e. don't expect huge differences. I don't own Split eq so I can't compare.
If you read the blurb again it looks like Sheen Machine is boosting the Tonal High component. You boosted the High Transients in Split EQ. The comparison examples sound very different to me. If you boosted the Tonal Highs in Split EQ it would probably be very close to Sheen Machine I'm guessing.
I think Deboom and Sheen Maschine sound more natural then Split EQ (which I already own). Great results within seconds. Will do some more comparison tomorrow.
Quick question … in the comparison with sheen machine, it looked like you boosted the Transient high shelf in split EQ, but doesn’t sheen machine boost the tonal high shelf?
Agreed, I noticed that too It appears that the transient (green) side from Split EQ is being used in the A/B here with Sheen rather than the harmonic (blue) side. Seems like blue would be preferred. However, in the A/B of DeBoom with Split, it appears that the harmonic/blue side of Split is being used, which makes more sense, at least to me. I absolutely agree that Split EQ is a much better investment. I'm currently using it a lot, with great success. Highly recommended.
@@darkcharmrecordsStuder is better for a more HiFi kinda tape feel without much tweaking, whereas I’d use Chow Tape for more effects based processing (think intentional tape mangling, doubling, etc)
Thank you for this - I have Split EQ and love it! I was tempted to also buy Sheen Machine and DeBoom when on special as they were so cheap, but so glad I saw this video! I'm trying to stop all my $20-$50 impulse plugin buys as they add up to significant $$$ quickly - instead I'm focusing on buying quality (plugins with a broad range of applications) over quantity...
On YT the Split-Eq has some more 4-6k transient peaks.. I use original YAM NS10 to compare.. on neo club and catacombs hard trance this will kill you ears in this eq range.. and the deboom has some more low mid transients in your compare..
Did you watch the video? The Sheen is EQing the transients only, the whole point of him using the Eventide SplitEQ is that it only boosts the transients and not the tonal information. The point of this review is to say that these plugins do what the Eventide SplitEQ does. You can't do this with a standard plugin.
Always love your presentations, and I particularly love this title. So subtle! It wouldn’t be the same if you only reviewed things you liked. Thank you for your work,it brings a lot of great insight my way. :-)🎉
Great video, thanks! By the way, does anyone pick up a difference in dynamics between the new plugins and the Split? I'm away from my monitors but on gaming headphones I thought I heard either a stereo-linked soft clipper or limiter which seemed to be leveling the transients -- 1, maybe 3db? The Split EQ would eclipse these in the studio for sure, but perhaps the new plugins can help podcasters or live vocal mic setups, especially on PA systems -- simple 'can't miss' enhancing knobs could be handy in those use cases!
Can anyone recommend a good beginner resource for audio engineering? Preferably a book. I need to learn the fundamentals of sound as it relates to music production. I would prefer to learn this, before learning a DAW. Things like signal paths, compressors, EQs, the overall process, etc.
wow... this is a weird move for eventide... any one knob plugins should be a free plugin that comes with the full plugin... just for the reason of low CPU load if you only want to use it for that one function... but to charge anything for it is a rip off... it should just be free with the full plugin
I guess these are for beginners who don't know how to use an EQ yet. Eventide probably wants to get a foot in the door with younger producers to build a long-term relationship and sell them more advanced plugins later on.
I don't even pay 99 cents for both pf them!!! Eventide is a recognized and prestigious company with more than 50 years of existence...I don't understand how they are not embarrassed to launch such a stupid thing like that...I imagine that the company's quality control manager must have retired recently or maybe those two plugins are going to be the Eventide Black Friday giveaway!!!
this is a narrow-minded perspective and your personal point of view, which i can't comprehend. i believe more people are buying this one knob, not the high-end split eq. youtubers, moderators, and various audio content creators who distribute content on any network don't require high-end plug-ins. if it's muffled or boomy, then using the one knob solution is sufficient. it's a smart move by eventide, explaining why they've been in business for decades.
Actually, it's not the same at all. I think you've made a mistake. I think they are boosting the tonal information on the sheen machine. I hear a lot more bright transients on your split-EQ setting, which makes sense, because you boosted them. So I agree that these plugins are very useless for an owner of the Split EQ, but I think your demonstration in this instance is very flawed. I might be mistaken, but that's my clear impression from the quick listen. I'm pretty confident about it. So the deboom cuts the tonal information of low frequencies and the sheenmachine boosts the tonal information of the high frequencies. I mean no disrespect - we all do mistakes sometimes.
"I might be mistaken" ... you are. The sheen case doesn't shound identical simpy because the exact Q and boost are mayby not set perfectly, who knows, maybe it's even a bell instead of a shelf, but it definately boosts transients. Think for a bit, what ywould be the logic to boost tonal? it would precisely boost the sibilants and harsh sustained sounds that the plugin specifically says it avoids. With the transients instead, it just ads detail/contrast, without becoming overly harsh.
@@AlexLapugean No I'm not. I was just being nice, in order not to sound like I'm talking down. It even says it in the plugin description that he showed and read at 1:48 . Honestly, the difference in sound is so big, I'm very confused that he didn't notice it. Maybe he's trolling. But you are 100% mistaken and I am 100% correct. *edit* Furthermore, it is quite common to boost tonal high-end and tame the transients. It's the other way around for lowend, but in highend you want the air without the harsh transients. That's why you use de-essers for example - they grab the transients and let the tonal information pass. It's also the reason why it's common to boost highend aggressively followed by a (fast attack and release) compressor. Low-end often has the issue of building up tonal information, because low frequencies are slow (a lot of tonal info), but you want to preserve the punch/fast info (transients). High-frequency transients often have the issue to be piercing and tiring for your ears - tonal information is usually not a big issue there.
Eventide Digital Product Team, "Let's take a 3 band DJ style EQ, split it up into 3 products. Nobody will notice". Nobody, "I have way too much money to spend more than $50 on a single band EQ knob! Let me spend money on stupid shit!"
To my ears Sheen Machine didn't bring out harshness the same way SplitEQ did in A/B DeBoom is just useless and removes way too much weight from the low end
clearly they are unnecessary if you already own the Split EQ which is the main plugin where their "algorithm" is from. "which is not the current status of everybody"
Fresh Air is a nice exciter but it requires Internet access. If these don't, that could be a plus, not that I'd ever buy them. Ozone11EQ has issues too, not being available in the Izotope installer.
This sounds suspiciously like "ensh!tification" if you're familiar with the term. Cory Doctorow wrote a book describing how companies, some bought by private equity firms and others just having their executive branch replaced by dead eyed finance bros, end up getting hollowed out for fast profits with products like this. I'm sure the end of Moog will be similar. Eventide might be on it's way out if they're doing rinky dink crap like this. Really too bad. Split EQ is amazing.
It's mind boggling that they lowered their standards to these "plugins" I use the Black Box Analog Design HG-2MS for this. Where you can add saturation too, if you want. Nope, not for me, these 2.
@@Jazzguitar00 Playing devils advocate here: Technically, saturation allows you to add tonal information, while taming transients, because you add harmonic information and saturation usually smears transients. But yes, it's a different processor alltogether.
SplitEQ in a knob, yeah? Please be reminded that there are different audiences for different projects. For some, the "one knob" bit is perfect...maybe for just parts of the mix or the whole thing. Perhaps, music producers should be aware that many of their activities can be reduced to fewer steps et al? This reminds me of how players laughed at the use of arpeggiators and macros that are now commonplace. In the end, we're making a sound, brah.
There is literally no valid reason to throw money to any kind of one-knob plugin, and even less so when they are just one single preset where the knob changes the effect strength or mix level.
This plugin is actually great if, like me, you make a mixtape and need to back off a little low end boom after loading up the bass with saturation plugins.
