    For aging/weathering I always use the water that I clean my paint brushes in. The color is different every time and it’s a mix of the colors I used to make the tombstone. I think this helps it blend well.

    These are really awesome videos and I SO appreciate you showing these techniques! I'm sure people have told you this before - but you have a voice that is PERFECT for doing voice-over work, audiobook work, commercials, anything. You may not want to explore that... but I just wanted to let you know in case you'd never thought about doing it. It's a tough gig to break into (I've never been successful doing anything more than local gigs), but with your voice I would think you would have an edge over us "normal-voiced" people. :)

    Even though you're not quite happy with the weathering I think this still turned out great. Just wanted a share a little tip I learned about speckle - the easiest way I've found to do it well is with a can of spray paint, and you just press the nozzle very lightly until it starts 'spitting'. Works really well if you get the distance right. Also I found to get a more "streaky" appearance for marble, you can dip a wire brush in paint and then flick it on the prop. Happy haunting!

    Tricks with concave shapes have always been fascinating to me. The video looks great and I really liked it when you got ahead of the comments about the final painting step. Perhaps with a brighter surface you could have had more option to remove the weathering, of course you would later have to re-seal it in matte.

    Great finish to the project, Derek! Your paint job was very well done, though I agree the aging layer was a little strong. It happens! I think I'd like to try the same illusion but perhaps on a large tombstone, and see if there was a way to try it without interior lighting. It would be a painting challenge to provide highlights and shadows, but might be interesting. Thanks again for sharing your creative endeavors. I hope to see VanOaks Cemetery this year if you do it.

    Do you think the dry lock would be enough to protect card board? Also do you put your fabric in the monster mud or just paint on ?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 года назад

      Cardboard may absorb some of the moisture in the Drylok, so I don't recommend it. I think its best to soak the fabric and then wring out as much as you can before placing it onto your prop. Then if you see any dry spots, brush those areas on.

    Turned out fantastic! I actually loved the weathering and felt it brought it all together. Great job. The only variation I think I would have tried would have been doing dead vines and overgrowth rather than thriving green. Question... Do you think if the bust was a bit less detailed, this could be used to create a talking or interactive face with rear projection mapping?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 года назад

      Thank you! Yes, if the bust was less detailed you could project onto it, but there's the potential of distortion around the edges as people moved off axis of it.

      @@VanOaksProps ah. Very true. May be worth playing with if it was done in the right manner or possibly used 2 separate projectors using the same video source carefully aligned so that they could be placed at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions so the edge detail stayed relatively the same. Or a simpler method would be to have it be forced frontal perspective like at the end of a hall or corridor that was roped off or inaccessible.
