Barbara is the ultimate entertainer. She performed with her sisters Louise and Irlene, and they had a variety show on TV that ran from 1980-1982. I saw Barbara in concert back in the 80s and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Listen to the record of this song. Grorge Jones comed out and sings with Barnara. You need to see Barbara as a teen playing the steel pedal guitar. It's a b & w clip. I think its from a rodeo. Loved watching "The Barbara Mandrell Show" with her sisters.
I was born and raised in Nashville. Love her music but she did take my parking spot at the mall when I was there first waiting for the other car to pull out.
She and her sisters are immensely talented! They all sing, dance and they play every instrument you can think of. They had their own tv show back in the day!❤ They are amazing.
This was my song back in high school - I was busy barrel racing and running rodeos while all my friends were into pop music! Love Barbara Mandrell! And just an FYI - this song was in response to the movie Urban Cowboy, that came out in the early 80's. Everybody went country after that movie.
Barbara has been in country music since she was a young girl playing the steel guitar. So even though she was still young in this video. She was still around longer then a lot of people that where criticizing her at the time for not being "Country". That is why this song fits her perfectly!
I was born and raised in Georgia and grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and I’ve had peanuts in my Coke many many times and it is good to me. I haven’t done that in years.
This was written as a response to all the people that started acting like they were "{country" after the movie Urban Cowboy came out a year earlier. This song fit me as I grew up wearing cowboy boots (or boot moccasins I'd made as a senior in high school in the late 70's), western and flannel shirts, and didn't like bell bottoms, but preferred straight leg jeans. Wore an old beat up cowboy hat when I was in the outdoors. Still dress that way 45 years later, except the hat is in decent shape 🙂 Still fish, hunt, backpack, and garden too.
Barbara has lots of great songs & also sang with her sisters as the Mandrell sisters. Check out her song 'Sleeping single in a double bed' & 'Crackers'. Love watching your show.
Love Barbara! Super sweet lady! Started up a conversation with my grandfather. He didn’t approach her. She approached him talking about dvd recorders she was buying for her husband lol.
When this song was originally recorded Barbara had George Jones singing on the song with her. In the past he had a reputation for not showing up or showing up drunk so when they did the show they didn't have him on there. I remember watching a show on TV when George came on to sing with her and he was drunk so I suppose after that she didn't ask him anymore. He finally got his act together but back then he was a mess. There was something on local news about him at least once a week. I live down the road from Nashville and George was as loved as they get. People were so glad when he stopped drinking.
My oldest sister, Colleen, looked just like Barbara’s sister Louise, the younger Louise when my sister was younger. Colleen and her husband went to the Bahamas one year and people kept asking her for her autograph. They thought she was Louise.
Ah, you should’ve listened to the radio version. She had George Jones singing with her in that. As for R&B…I think country music, at least the old stuff, is more like R&B than the new stuff they play. So yeah, I can see artists making that transition. Both country and R&B are mostly commercially pop music these days, so crossing over isn’t necessarily about making more money so much as it might be about finding something a bit more authentic. That I can understand-unless they’re just trying to imitate modern country acts that aren’t really country anyway, then it’s just more of the same. I don’t even see that as a new direction for any R&B artist if they do it that way.
My momma went to high school with Wynn Varble who wrote songs like “waiting on a woman” by Brad Paisley and she uses this song to describe him back then lol she said he was just genuinely his country self haha. We’re from Georgia too!
This is how quite a few true country fans felt about Taylor Swift. That she only used country music to get a foot in the door of the music industry and then "kissed" country music behind.
4:51 That's interesting.. I don't know much about R&B, and I didn't know they were trying to break into the country music scene. I haven't been keeping up with modern "country" music. But I have been witnessing other type of artists seemingly trying to break into the country music scene over the years. Like Jelly Roll, and apparently even Struggle Jennings and Adam Calhoun. Jelly is from Nashville, and Struggle is Waylon's grandson, so they country in some senses, but they were all originally rappers. Including Upchurch. It's interesting seeing them go the singing route after all these years. I loved their rap songs, but I don't really like their singing songs, personally. It's also hard for me to recognize most of the songs I heard from them as country music as well. I don't know if it's because they're mixing beats in with the music, or something else.. I think it's multi-faceted, but I haven't been able to put into words why I don't like it. It kinda seems like people are mixing sounds up from different genres, in which you can't clearly put a genre label, such as country, on it.. Would all of the different genre sounds coming together cause a lot of music to become homogenized? Some say modern country sounds basically like pop. I think some up-and-coming artists of today listen to and are influenced by multiple genres, so that might result in multiple genres getting mixed into their sound. How do you figure out what genre label to put on that?. Is it just homogenized American music? I'm not opposed to people mixing things together, but I also think it's important to have different genres and clear standards for classifying music as being of a particular genre. Genres need to have a clear individual identity to be considered a genre.. Idk. My thoughts about it are all over the place.
I used to do the peanuts in Pepsi/Coke when I was a kid in the early 2000's. I'm from Oklahoma.. My dad told me about it, and did it himself, when we were going fishing for crappie.. We used the Planters Flaming Hot peanuts, and it was sooo good. I would imagine plain peanuts would pale in comparison.. I am curious if you ever actually ended up trying it though.
I don't think R&B is on a decline, but I do see more cross over between hip hop and country. Tasha, I always enjoy you and T's reactions, keep going, there's always more ahead.
I think the movie “Urban Cowboy” may have been a part of getting more people interested in country music. Country music in the 80’s and 90’s was some of the best. I like to listen to Prime Country on SiriusXM. They play music from the 80’s and 90’s. “Urban Cowboy” had a great soundtrack and was a good movie starring John Travolta. I saw Barbara Mandrell in concert with Lee Greenwood in the early 80’s. She was great.
Urban Cowboy got the attention of people that wanted to dance or learn to actually dance, ie Two Step, Waltz, Triple Step and Country Swing. Dancing is fun. I grew up in 50s and 60s. Dancing for us was jumping around. Slow dancing was holding each other while swaying or rocking. My wife talked me into dance lessons in 1980. Love it
I always related to this song. Of course I also listened to Rock and Roll and R & B, Soul,, Disco, Pop, RAP, Jazz and Show Tunes, the only genres I never really got into were Heavy Metal and Punk, I did like some of it though. My Dad used to talk about putting peanuts in his coke, I've never tried it, though I love savory sweet combos.Great reaction to an old favorite! I miss Barbara Mandrell, She was in a bad car accident in 1984 that sort of derailed her career. Thanks for the memories. This was fun!
This song hits close to home because I was listening to country music forever before anyone cared about it like they do now not saying today artists aren’t good but classic is better in my opinion and tbh if u never like something don’t pretend to like it now just my opinion is all
A lot of R&B has a lot in common with a lot of country. They come from many of the same places (both geographically and emotionally). Sometimes it just comes down to white artists get labelled country and black artists get labelled R&B.
Try peanuts in coke. My wife and I do quite often. Might try it with Diet Coke not sure how that would be. Great comment though, I have noticed a lot of African Americans are getting into country music or doing videos like yours, I enjoy your channel. Take care and God Bless you and yours
I put the hot and spicy peanuts in my Coke. If you don't normally drink soda don't do it. For you patreon people "put another log on the fire" think about it suggest it.
I understand that music changes, but new country is nothing like old country. I blame it on early 90’s. Garth brooks and shania twain made the charts in country and pop music. Then all genres invaded country. I know it evolves. I love the outlaw era. There are still outlaw singers, but they don’t play it on the radio. I think it’s sad.
Yeah, Garth and Shania probably helped contribute to that. I can't count the number of times I've heard non-country people say they love Garth Brooks when asked if they listen to country. And Shania, I vaguely remember hearing a documentary where artists and people talked about how Shania just badly wanted to be a star, and she didn't care how she did it.
Oh yes this is a great classic song by 2 Nashville songwriters who had a few chart from singers Kyle Fleming and Dennis Morgan Kyle Fleming she also wrote The Great Ronnie milsap Smokey mountain rain with Denny. And then she branched out into some pop and Christian country too and a little R&B
Very insightful. I agree with you. They just want to jump onto the country wagon.. The thing wrong with that is that country music is being watered down.
If the sugars in regular coke or pepsi don't go well with you, try it with diet versions of it. Not quite as good, but a close enough experience. I have done it with regular pepsi decades ago. Tip: make sure the soda (pop) is ICE cold for best experience.
Country music isn't country music anymore! So, it also could use a new element to put it back away from pop music as long as the new artists sing about the country life!
Modern country music has lost touch with it’s base and modern country (if it can even be called country) has no feeling or emotion like old country. Only a few artist stay true to the country roots. If you haven’t reacted to Cody Johnson then here’s two songs to check out. With you I am and Till you can’t
Love this song but she is the least liked of the Mandrell’s. Louise and Arlene were amazing and the name of my chickens. Barbara was a bully older sister.
Does anyone remember the Barbara Mandrel show, with the Mandrel sisters?
Yes I do, used to watch it every week when it was on.
barbara was one of the greatest female artist of all time
Barbara is the ultimate entertainer. She performed with her sisters Louise and Irlene, and they had a variety show on TV that ran from 1980-1982. I saw Barbara in concert back in the 80s and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Alan Jackson sang "Gone Country" about people who became country singers as a career move. Fun song.
I think country music fans are becoming more aware of the posers! Barbara was one classy lady...glad you are being introduced to her!
Listen to the record of this song. Grorge Jones comed out and sings with Barnara. You need to see Barbara as a teen playing the steel pedal guitar. It's a b & w clip. I think its from a rodeo. Loved watching "The Barbara Mandrell Show" with her sisters.

@@tashajackson Listen to Drake Milligan an up and coming star of country music just sang on Americas Got Talent...
Urban COWBOY is my all time favorite movie
@@michellehubbard7865 It's one of my favorites too - except it reminds a lot of me and my ex!
@@jdodd2798 same here
She could play the steel guitar among many other instruments
Yep, she still can!
@@37434mh Now this is an entertainer. Well deserved. I cant recall how many times she won it.

Yeah u need to see her go crazy on instruments like steel guitar and banjo
I consider myself very fortunate to have seen both her and Kenny Rogers in concert the Fall of 1991. One of the best concerts EVER!
I was born and raised in Georgia and grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and I’ve had peanuts in my Coke many many times and it is good to me. I haven’t done that in years.

Sasha, I’ve lived in SC all of my life. Peanuts & Coke is a southern thang!!
I love your reaction to this country classic!!!
Sleeping single 8n a double bed another amazing one

There is a video with him coming out on live stage!

I grew up not far from Barbra and her sisters.
All through my Jr high school years and up until today, I have been crushing on Barbra and her sisters.

A lot of R&B has a lot in common with a lot of country. They come from many of the same places (both geographically and emotionally). Sometimes it just comes down to white artists get labelled country and black artists get labelled R&B.
Tasha, I requested both Steve songs during a live. It's always great to hear them. Thank you as always!!
I still love my peanuts and coke, in fact, had some today. Go for it girl!!
In the studio song George Jones joins in..it's even better.
Barbara covered RNB songs plus black people had an influence on early Country music. Our presence in many genres of music is not new.
The recorded version has George Jones joining in near end of song.
Love this because George is in it lol
She can play almost any musical instrument
Yeah, I was country when country wasn't cool! Never been, or wanted to be, anything else!

Hey, bring on the R&B singers. They will probably be as good or better than about 80% of the "country" artists that are popular these days.
Barbara was Reba before Reba.. there's nothing she can't play. in the 80's she had a tv show called the Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell sisters.
Reba often credits Barbara as one of her role models.
her and her sisters had a variety show back in the early - mid 80s. But she was the better singer in my opinion
I want you to try the peanuts and coke.
Yes try it! As for the R&B that was Elvis’ fault. He was a mix of it all if you think about it.
You have to listen to the version with George Jones
I was Country when Country wasn't cool except I didn't put peanuts in My coke
Yes. Please in peanuts in a bottled coke.
Gone country by Alan Jackson
The one with George is much better
I think peunits an coke are great ,the R .B singers just trying to ride the wave
Country music isn't country music anymore! So, it also could use a new element to put it back away from pop music as long as the new artists sing about the country life!
OK so what is the peanuts in Coke all about
