In 2021 Scottish-based artist Kate Downie embarked on a project to ‘finish’ Joan Eardley’s ‘Two Children’, a painting left unfinished at the artist’s premature death in 1963. In this interview, filmed on 22 February 2022, exactly a year after the germ of the idea first formed, Downie reflects on the journey, her motivation, the difficulties and the discoveries. A fitting conclusion to a unique project that is both a tribute and a celebration in Eardley’s centenary year.
Downie’s final art artwork was purchased by Glasgow Museums in 2022 with the generous support of the Eardley Estate.
