By the time you finished talking about motorbikes, I was not sure if they are allowed in Yangon or not. You said they were popular but illegal there. Confused! lol
yeah. only Yangon city isn't allowed to drive motorbikes. You can drive around the rest of the country but not in Yangon. But some people are still driving motorbikes in some areas like slum. That's why you get to be much careful while driving around those areas since they've zero knowledge about road safety and regulations.

Good driving Aoi San! I thought Myanmar's cars drove on the right. I learned that since the 70s it had switched.
I visited Burma in 1985 four years after the change over to driving on the right side of the ride. Most cars were British and dated back to the 1950s and were RHD. There were a few RHD Toyota and NIssan trucks recently imported from Japan. I rode around in the back of one with four other backpackers for five days on a tour to Bagan and Imle lake. The roads were bad and the driver needed a co-driver in the passenger seat to let him know when to overtake. It was hair raising for the passengers at times.
Burmese are as attached to RHD vehicles today as they were in the 1980s. There is no market for LHD vehicles despite the change-over 40 years ago.

For all those (like me) confused about the cars being RHD but also driving on the right the answer is…complicated. Being a former British colony they should drive on the left, and did so until 1970 when former dictator General Ne Win decreed changing to the right. However because 90% of the cars in Myanmar are RHD, due to most being used cars imported from Japan & Thailand, they have this weird system. To complicate matters all new cars are LHD. Confused? Now you know how Aoi San feels!
