- Yo if nothing else: DEFINITELY play around with this tool... it's amazing!
Brian and Jason dive into the mysterious world of numbers stations-enigmatic shortwave radio broadcasts linked to espionage and the Cold War. Using the incredible online shortwave radio (we forwarded shortwave.themodernrogue.com to it), we explore how to access public shortwave radios and uncover hidden transmissions still operating today.
Along the way, we explain what numbers stations are, their history, and why they remain a fascinating relic of secret communications. Tune in to join the hunt for these cryptic signals with us!

Real ones know this is a repost
repost of one of my favorite MR videos
From way back in 2016 apparently.
They all are
Yeah: I'm remastering the old stuff in 4K and taking out all the ads to create a "perfect edition" series of them. I premiere a new one every day and we have a watch party. You should join us! -BB
@@scamschoolMake more videos guys! I got through high school because of you guys!
When I was a kid, I stayed up until all hours of the night surfing shortwave channels. We had a metal bunk, and I used to lean the ghetto blaster's antenna against one of the metal legs to greatly increase the reach.
The first time you actually hear one on your radio, rather than a recording, it is spooky. Especially knowing that you are hearing it at the same time an agent is getting instructions. Pryom website will tell you when the next broadcast might occur, although not all of them are strong enough to be picked up all over the world.
Hey Brian and Jason, LOVED this video, ticks a fair few of my boxes! For info, there are tons of free-to-use online receivers - also directories of them so you can choose one in a suitable location for what you're trying to receive. As well as the shortwave bands, there are also ones that cover VHF, UHF, and even into the gigahertz. It's an awesome pool of resources for anyone that's fascinated by radio but don't have the kit and/or can't put up antennas. Happy New Year to you and your families.
Care to list some of your favorites?
@@dancoroian1 Hi Dan, I've tried three times to reply to you but YT keeps throwing an error. So I'll try again... I use Twente (shown in this video) and Hack Green (UK) mostly (for HF). Directories of other online receivers - if you're looking for signals in a specific location - can be found by googling "websdr" and "kiwisdr" (kiwi has some digital mode decoding built in as well as AM/FM/SSB). For info and schedules of known numbers stations, HF Underground or Priyom.
@@dancoroian1 Sure, search for websdr and kiwisdr for directories (if you're looking for a receiver in a specific area). Kiwi SDRs also have built-in decoding for some of the digital modes as well as the usual AM/FM/SSB. I most often use Twente SDR shown in this video and Hack Green in the UK. This is the fourth time I've tried to reply but for some reason my posts are disappearing.
Your excitement reminds me of how I felt as a child exploring shortwave radio.
Very interesting topic I love it so glad your still putting out quality content
Also what was the website you were using?
this is a 7/8 year old video
I forwarded shortwave.themodernrogue.com to it. It's blast! -Brian
UTC is a mashup of Coordinated Universal Time and Temps Universel Coordonné because the English and the French had to compromise.
I had the exact same reaction when I found out about this. It is so spooky and exciting.
holy shit this is so crazy to watch and the tool is available to the public? I'm gonna spend the whole night watching this OH MY GODDD
It's a rabbit hole. It's totally magical and haunting. You're sitting there, literally listening to the whole wide world!
@7:25 That WWCR transmission is AM but you have the SDR set to USB
"Now that the cold war is over"
Who wants to tell him?
@@VikingTeddy 😂😂😭😭 I’ll volunteer if needed
Can you pick up VOR navigation beacons or perhaps the ILS beacons?
Welcome to the shortwave listening club.
@2:13 Ackshually... UTC = Coordinated Universal Time (CUT) or in french Temps Universel Coordonné (TUC) which was then "settled" in UTC as a compromise 😅
yeah, we goofed on that part. Good catch!
@@scamschool No worries, minor mistake. I just thought it was a fun fact. Keep up the awesome work, I always love your videos and am hugely honored to even get a reply from you!
starting to think number stations are top secret because theyre used to create crypto keys via "weather patterns". i know you can get different power levels based on atmospheric conditions, and the military has TONS of weather monitors, just seems like it may be part of the algorithm in the creation since it can be something that is set and forgot about, maybe needs to be fueled every so often. the transmit stations are also usually secure facilities, i think some are military, but prob all some sort of government.
a lot of stuff you're listening to may have been a bouncing frequency which appears to have a bandwidth it really doesn't. finding signals is easy, decoding is a whole field of its own. theres ppl that can tell you the equipment being used based on the waveform
Get an RTL SDR and run SDR#!
You should get a ham radio license.
This is interesting.
During the start of the Ukraine war we used the same website to listen to active Russian fighter pilots as they still used old school radio.
I heard about this! SO AMAZING!!!
Yes
Hey, you know what UTC is, you have no excuse not to use it.
hah! legit point.
:)
I find nothing remotely interesting about this. You're gonna sit and listen to beeps and pulses that you will never be able to decode in several lifetimes? Go do something productive.
@@krisley5178 you seem like a fun person…. 😭

Yeah dude, deeps and pulses are awesome.
