    I owned a 2014 Optima EX w/ technology package w/ Infiniti Audio for two years and just recently switched to a 2016 optima EX w/ Navigation/Harmon Kardon Audio. Needless to say, i couldn't be happier. It's almost like they read my mind as far as the interior changes and the addition of USB and power ports in the back is key for long road trips. The Rear window shade is a nice added touch as well and there is much more sky visible from the backseat . Being a motor head i didn't really like the idea of a smaller engine. However, it seems to be much more responsive than before. It seems they have smoothed out the drive by wire system/acceleration curve. The audiophile in me finds it hard not to listen to a song on Max Volume. But the 2016 is much louder and clearer than the 2014 system. In addition, the 3D surround feature is like hearing every song in your playlist for the first time. Great job Kia!

    Just bought a 2016 Optima SXL in Pearl White and couldn't be happier. The dog days of Kia are over folks. This car is ridiculous loaded! Drives and rides great. Tops in its class when you consider all the options and price point. I would LOVE if they made this in a rear wheel 6 cylinder.

    I also really enjoyed the driver oriented dash of the last generation Kia Optima and was initially sad to see it go. The interior design seems to go with a less "look at me" approach and more to a functional environment. Beauty in simplicity. With the plastic line that borders the driver orientation gone, I think it gives a more open and calmer feel to the cabin. Did you get to drive it?

    With 2 Optimas in our drive...Love the original for its front to back design...only what was needed...no ancillary cues or distractions. My favorite change for the better is the intersection of rear glass and greenhouse. Should be easier to check the blindspot and lightens the rear section of the beautiful car.

      +scterka We covered the issue as it pertains to Chrysler in a very detailed way a referenced above but I have copied the text below. As for Honda, the issue is similar just to a more egregious level. And before you ask, there are others: Subaru. At the end of the day, we love what we do, but we're running a business here and as such, need to make sometimes painful but prudent decisions.
      TEXT FROM Chrysler / Dodge Hellcat episode:
      Appreciate you reaching out . . . first off, want to say that we are HUGE fans of Ralph, Klaus Busse, Mark Trostle, Dick Winkles, Erich Heuschele, Chris Nowak, Dave Cottrell and all the people we have been fortunate enough to work with over the years that dream up, design, engineer and build Chrysler and SRT (especially) cars. If you have seen our episodes with these guys, you know that they have become friends over the years. That said, about two and half years ago the communications group within Chrysler up in Auburn Hills made the decision to severely limit our access to their cars which left us with a problem: We had developed a hugely loyal viewer base in the Mopar faithful that watched our films for which we are VERY thankful. You guys watched our films to the point that let’s just say, I'm not saying we’re Motor Trend but numbers were not the problem. But the reality of our business is this: timely access to cars is everything. Shoot a car too late, and you won’t make enough revenue from advertising and views to cover your cost of production. At first, because of the highly strategic relationship we had developed with Chrysler - Ralph especially - and the size of the audience we had developed that followed this specific brand within our show, we became creative on how to work around the issue. But as we got more creative, the problem became worse to the point of not being sustainable. Sadly, even though we had tried hard to come to a solution over the past 2 years it was with the Hellcat that the issue came to an impasse. As stated at the beginning of this post, we have great admiration for the folks behind the cars and VERY much want to arrive at a solution to this issue so we can continue creating great films with Ralph and the boys on their - as of late - truly epic cars.

  • @TonyTube407

    I think Kia did a great job improving on an already best-seller without messing with success. EXCEPT...the one thing that I love and initially attracted me to my '12 SX was the driver-focused dash. This change may play heavily on my decision to trade my '12 in for this new model. But as far as everything else? Wow! Way to go Kia!! Adaptive headlights, emergency braking, quieter (one of the biggest complaints on my '12 is the road noise), stiffer, intelligent cruise? What's not to like on an already fantastic vehicle? Hopefully the MSRP hasn't gone up too much because the older models were quite the bargain for what you got, and quite frankly the reason many of us pounced on the newer generation Optima. If Kia and their parent company Hyundai isn't careful, they'll price themselves right out of the segment and I'm not sure there's a market for uber-luxurious Kias. Note - I haven't seen a single K900 on the road here in Portland, OR. And by the way, Mr. MotoMan, what an intelligent, unique review. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks!!

      TonyTube407 You can fix that road noise problem by upgrading to some high quality grand touring all season tires (Pirelli Cinturato P7 all season plus, Bridgestone Turanza Serenity, Michelin Premier A/S) and check once a month to make sure you keep your tire pressure at or just above the factory recommended pressure. Usually 32 psi.

    I think the less dramatic change in the design was a smart move, just because it will improve the association of the brand with longevity. Before the changes were so dramatic that the vehicle from the last year looked dated. Looks like a great evolving design ;)

    I would have liked to seen the exterior design pushed further and I do prefer the interior design of the old car. Very nice option list though.
    I had a nearly-base model '15 Optima for a rental car a few months back. I was quite impressed with the car. It was quiet, stiff, and rode well. Being someone that only drives/buys manual transmission cars, I was intrigued by the powertrain. As mentioned in the video, the Kia engines seem to be designed to perform really well from ~1000-2,200 rpm. They make plenty of torque and the 6-speed trans loves to shift as early as possible. In theory this should lower the stress on the engine/trans and provide good fuel economy. It certainly won't get an enthusiast's heart beating, but it makes a lot a sense in a commuter/road trip car.

    I've always like the Optima design but my pet peeve was the amount of cabin noise, I traded out of the 2012 hybrid into the 2014 and if this is as much improved as the videos are alluding (still need to test drive), I may be in for a 2016 or 2017 hybrid or plug-in. If gas prices stay low, I may go to a 2.0T. I like that the interior has grown into a more European look with it still being slanted a bit toward the driver but not as separated as before. Change, instead of stitched plastics, do stitched leather on the dash (more cost I understand but better look), what happened to full parking sensors instead of rear only? The European car will have lane keep assist (LKA), not just warning (LDW), headlight washers and other stuff that are found on "luxury" cars, but look Honda decided to put front sensors on the 2016 Accord! Also, why not the 7 speed DCT for the 2.0T? Or an 8 speed for that matter? They could tune the engine for better power on the top level cars and with the 2 extra cogs still maintain a decent level of economy. Those are the things I would like to see in the Optima. Oh, the chrome vents are growing on me but the could have done a sportier front bumper and give us some fog lights. Overall though, I like it.

    Seriously I like what Kia did with the K900. The new optima is nice specially the interior. If you ask me I would change the idea about Kia and Hyundai now days.. Because it is a offer a good things in a good price! I don't like Kia's or Hyundai's but I think they're good for last 5 years, and that 50% steel it's a big step forward!

    so far the only change that I would say would love to see is more POWER, there on out great looking cars for what they were in a decade ago, love the way they gave Kia that nice lux and sporty taste, we can all bash on the Brand for their bad rep in the past but hey no joke I would rather take an Optima then a let's say Accord for the price and goodies, shoot I'm actually looking into getting me a Sorrento very soon with at some point I was looking at getting either a Highlander or a Pathfinder, but Kia did it better, and like I said, more better for the buck

    The center console looks inspired by the BMW 3 series interior, not only with the button layout but with that trim piece on the right that gives the "driver oriented dashboard" looks. The steering wheel reminds me a lot of the GTI. The shifter looks too big and somewhat ugly.

    I own a kia SKL and I have to say I owned bmws jeep Cherokee alot of badge named cars .I love the SKL turbo only things I don't the passenger seat sits to low and the handling a little loose but all the interior perks I love the dash is moulded to perfection. the voice command nav blue tooth all right on point and if I want to go to paddle shifting. alot of fun great pick up for a 4 cylinder. the light grey nappa leather looks great.again passenger seat sits too low and handling too loose but ac seats as well heated back and front and all passengers can climate control themselves other than that I love the car never thought I would ever purchase a kia and I'm not disappointed

      +gaivoron couldn't agree with you.. i think the '11-13's are by far the best designed Optima.. not to knock the '14-15 models, they come at a close 2nd

    • @thecarelectronicguy687
      @thecarelectronicguy687 8 лет назад

      +gaivoron It's not as much of a change because there wasn't anything wrong with the way the previous Optima looked, and Kia knows that. The previous Optima was a much bigger style change than the one before it because there were lots of things wrong with the way that car looked. Kia is looking at it as there's no reason to fix something that isn't broken, but they still want to change the styling slightly so that the different generations have some distinguishability between them.

  • @1gnoreTh1s
    @1gnoreTh1s 8 лет назад

    Don't ask me why, but this Optima looks very American to me. I really liked the design of the previous 2014-ish Optima; especially those beautiful LED's at night.
    But take for example the Kia Ceed GT. That is one great looking car. This - meh not so much. Looks almost five years old, I'm afraid.

    Nothing about this car makes me want to turn in my 2012. I actually wish Kia would take the genesis and build a kia version with a smaller foot print. I originally chose the optima because i was stepping out of a Lincoln LS and wanted something reliable but still had a slight edge. Now that I am looking to move back to an LS type of vehicle (RWD, sporty dynamic) I find that Kia doesn't have anything to offer me. The dealership tried to convince me the cadenza was a good option but as i told them, it doesn't offer the type of driving dynamics I'm interested in. So when i start shopping i won't have kia on my list.

    What I like:
    o Android Auto...Cell phone integration should be top priority for quick, easy, and seamless connectivity
    o Adjustable Passenger seat: I sell Kias and that was the number one complaint with the previous year models
    What I Dislike:
    o The design: It's not bad I actually like it...there's just not enough change to be wowed
    o The Dash: I appreciated the ergonomics of the 2015 and how Kia directed the display towards the driver. I still have to get in one to confirm rather or not this is a better interior design
    What would I change:
    o Fuel Economy should be up there with Nissan. I do not know what the rating is but I don't think its estimated at 38MPG

      I dislike the gauges, it's so dry & bland for a 2016, I saw what Camry has on theirs, so much more legit & premium. very disappointed because it is something you look at quite often whenever you drive.

    Here's my take. Should I drop my hard earned $30,000 on this car? Will will last as long as my 2004 Honda Accord still running after 11 yrs?? No one cares about the design, no one cares about what KIA is doing in the design house. We care about reliability, KIA is competing with Honda and Toyota You completely left that out, should Honda and Toyota owners move to KIA and be satisfied? You left all of that out. AS someone reviewing cars all the time, I would myself be only interested in what the new one looks like.

    Centre dash design is a copy of a BMW 3 series.

    interior looks a lil cheap and outdated and their performance is a average. My 2013 accord exl 185 hp 4cyl would laugh at the 2.0 turbo and gets better mpg's. In edmunds review thex2.0 turbo did 0 to 60 in the high 7 second range which is slow and the new 16's lost like 20 hp. Slow, cheap, and resale value is why i will continue to pass on the koreans. I traded my 13 accord exl for a 16 exl and imo this kia doesnt compare. I would rather have the 16 civic than the optima.
