I wish the DS remake of Chrono trigger was back in 2008 IT never got ported over to the PS3 PS4 Switch YET as for Kai/Kuro 3 I'm glad their doing that the Marchen Garden from the 2nd game (Daybreak/Kuro 2) was too BORING. So the Grim Garden BATTLES are going to be similar to the Marchen Garden only WITH SIMILAR MINI games that the TRC Hajimari no Kiseki had.
Giving the main character in DQ more of a presence doesn't mean they have to give them a voice. Having various dialog choices like in Dragon Age Origins will still let the player project the personalty they want on the MC without the MC ever actually saying a word. They could also have the MC show facial expressions that fit the scene and grunt like Link does.
i feel like they want to play around a bit with the idea. i could never get into dragon quest, besides the first one, but it had nothing to do with the MC not having a voice/lines. it was mostly the absurdly grindy nature of dragon quest. specially compared to final fantasy and the square line of rpgs.
It's always super fun when you have guests. I agree with Joseph on the silent protagonist thing, I feel like there are traditions the fans are good with keeping even as technology progresses.
Dude, a Chrono fighting game would have been awesome. There was this fan made fighting game that has Crono, Cloud, Link, and some other video game characters called Card Sagas Wars. It unfortunately is no longer being developed by the original creator, but it is an awesome looking game.
26:50 my thing here, I just played DQ11, and there were A LOT of points where the game did something where the plot could have been solved if the MC could have just told the others what was going on, but because he's a silent protag, things just have to happen, especially in the post time time travel BS. i feel like thye could just play with the idea of a silent protagonist, the way south park did. make it part of the story that the MC is mute. and play with that aspect. use it to explain why he has trouble fitting in with others.

The thing with silent protagonist is that are not the best for writing a compelling story. You are just a character in a world that only interacts with you when you are playing or being asked a question most of the time. They’re not truly active in the narrative. Zelda and Metroid work because the story is just a vehicle for the game, Zelda stories do not matter, no one plays them to experience a gold story, same thing with Metroid. They just want to play the game.
Dragon Quest V is the best game to use a silent protagonist imo. You really feel connected to the MC through the hardships you experience through the story. Horii also seems to agree being that V is his favorite DQ. That being said I agree 100%. There is a reason FFVI is so much more relatable and well liked than DQVI

A Viewtiful Joe collection would make me very happy. That gem has been lost to time, and really deserves a rerelease. I've been itching to replay them for years. If they made a Viewtiful Joe 3 on top of that, my head might explode from excitement.

I have a confession to make i played GI, HSR, ZZZ, and WW but then again i still play offline RPGs because they offer value memorable experience to me personally like i just started playing Trails of the Sky and getting into the trails series and i replayed BoF3 (cuz it's my favorite game) So nothing changed my gaming DNA when it comes to live service games
This video is how shipping wars starrt. That's great news about Mega Man but I really, really wish they held Breath of Fire in such high esteem. We need a new, real Breath of Fire game. Or even HD ports/remakes of the first 4 games. Granblue Fantasy was only fighting games on consoles before getting an action RPG this year. That turned out well, so I could see Samurai Showdown working as well. And I would love a Street Fighter RPG. I can't play on small screens. It just doesn't feel satisfying. I thought the Fate games were all fighters. I might have to give that remake a shot. I kind of agree with Yujihori. It's weird to get to a dramatic scene and everyone is impassioned or excited and the MC just looks blankly at each character. It's supposed to be so that you can "map" yourself to the character, but they often don't react the way you would. Silent protagonists worked much better when you had to read dialogue as it didn't stand out as much. So I'd be okay with a voiced protagonist in DQ XII.
I think this like the third time this had happened with Tales of Xillia. This was even bigger news in 2020, and I was excited then too. I'm going to say it's probably not coming. It's probably NamcoBandai doing it's strange distraction technique.
Damn i grew up with tobal no1 and Chrono Trigger and i have to admit i remember chrono trigger like 100 percent and tobal maybe 1% i think they should of made it just a chrono trigger fighter lol
On the subject of the silent protagonist: I think pointing to FFXIV is a great way to show a silent protagonist done well... Or arguably done adequately, then well, then very well as the series progressed.
That is really a very controversial matter. But it's important to note that it's the idea of the original creator, who gladly is still handling the franchise... Which is kind of rare for such an old franchise. So now it's the best time to test a modern DQ without a silent protagonist, rather than leaving this important transition in charge of a replacement.

BUT I am playing ZZZ on PlayStation and not a phone- but it’s because it feels like it deserves more than my little phone full of apps. It’s also an action title, so I can’t put up with that on mobile.
The problem is that the current times are not convenient for that kind of project. The idea was first considered close to the CT release, and that made total sense. But now it makes no sense. The current times are more convenient (business wise) to work with other games like... a DQ crossover fighting game planned to be close to DQ12 and including the game's cast, or a Persona crossover fighting game planned to be close to P6 including the P6 cast, or a new FF crossover fighting game. Or a more ambitious crossover fighting game putting together many different classic rpgs (including CT of course).
I'm with you on the mobile game stance. For me, phones are for calling and computers/PCs are for gaming but all the best to those who differ. Play what you love and love what you play.
Nooo I absolutely loved White Knight Chronicles T_T EDIT: Also wanted to add Silent protagonists to me feel lame when they force the appearance or gender on them. For example. I typically enjoy Male protagonists over Females (just a preference), DQXI had a silent protag, so why can I not customize their looks or gender, etc? If they aren't going to talk what does that break? Them allowing choices allows people to feel that immersion more on a silent protag.
Mega Man 11 was so challenging that it felt a bit choreographed. Arpg like the Legends games is the way to go if open world. As a platformer they can add rpg elements but one of mega man's draws is how simple gameplay is. You never forget how. Also other characters are well received like the Zero and Tron Bonne games. An open world or mmo game could all be refreshing. That ps2 MMX turn based rpg is like, probably not something I wanna play, though. Battle network probably had more action than that. I still think they could probably cross mega man over into almost any style lol. A zelda-like open world game, etc.
That is a complicated matter, because Capcom wasn't giving much attention to MM at that time, and by the look of the own console (3d) games the staff was very unprepared. Like, it's hard to believe that MMX8 is from the same time of Resident Evil 4 (some months apart), but that's the result of extremely contrasting treatments inside a company that disrespects their classic franchises (btw that was the time Street Fighter was buried). In short MM projects were poorly funded and got only unqualified staff. So results like MM X Command Mission must not be used to straight up negate the chances of success of a new MM turn based rpg. If Capcom actually takes MM more seriously this time I believe there are fairly good chances for a MM turn based rpg. It could use the edgy setting of the MMZ series, the bright and cute style of the classic MM series, or the MMX series that is the middle ground between both extremes. MM actually is a franchise of huge potential and promising ideas, including in varied genres. It only needs good care, that Capcom refuses to do.

A full 3d game could be amazing. I have probably the only ps2 street fighter game, and the guy at the store didn't believe it existed. RE: Silent protagonist. I do get Horii's increasing concern on this matter. I think a series where this has often been an issue are the recent Pokemon games, especially Sun and Moon on the 3DS. The move to more cinematic cutscene direction with practically "frozen" expressions on the player character just looks off when done poorly. Here's a quick spitball idea: Player-controlled real-time facial animation during cutscenes. Like holding down x/b makes aserious faces, o/a makes a tired face, ^/x makes a laughing face, and []/y makes sad face. Obviously this can be abused to hell and back by the player for their own amusement and especially streamers, but I think it is a good way to let the player decide how they through the protagonist want to react to the events as they unfold. RE: Fate franchise. As someone else mentioned, Fate is a mutli-media franchise but it is not anime-first. Type-Moon are a long-running indie developer, and Fate was their big breakout hit 20 years ago as a visual novel. The original version was an R18 game, but that was more of a marketing ploy; at that time, the market for indie visual novels skewed towards erotic content, so they slapped on some sex scenes to market their epic death-game story. All three routes adds up to around 60 hours and there's only a few scenes per route, so we are talking less than an hour of such content spread out very thinly. The porn Trojan worked, and the series took off. After that, they were able to spread out to other game genres, novels, manga, and anime, and the currently ongoing Fate/Grand Order is a turn-based mobile gacha RPG/visual novel hybrid that has been going for several years and makes tractor trailers of money. However, despite how big Fate is international, the original visual novel that started it all (Fate/stay night) never left Japan, not even the non-porno version made for PS2 and later remade for PSVita. It's finally going to see an international release later this year on PC and Switch.

Oh, WuWa PS5 is playable! Hopefully, we will see it releaese soon. I'm playing it on my phone/tablet, but I can't do the timings necessary for counters and perfect dodges reliably. A silent protagonist is easier for me to stomach if I can play a girl. Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 is a great example. You can play a boy or girl and they are very expressive when it's necessary.
Ancient Roman was popularized by a youtuber known as KarasumaA in Japan; this game used to be fairly obscure even there before that. When you think that it came out a year after FF 7... yeah, it could've certainly been better, hahah. They really screwed up almost everything that could be screwed up in a JRPG.
We still can't play Chrono Trigger on current systems but they decided to give us a fighting game instead.....yeah that makes sense.....never mind, it was cancelled.
I have been pining for a dino crisis remake, or a NEW darkstalkers game. And they locked AVP beatem up in the basement and wont even acknowledge its existence, its not been put out on any console you cant really own it
Stellar Blade just continues to deliver all the things gamers demand. Edit: Dave you gotta expand your anime knowledge with how much you know about JRPGs it's shocking the lack of Anime knowledge you have. They pretty much go hand in hand. I've seen the gameplay for Ancient Roman and i can obviously tell that it's a FF7 knock and not even a good one at that. And i though RPG's like StarGazer and Shadow Madness were messy games with a lot of jank, But on the bright side Acient Roman looks to be the funny kind of bad and not "Bad" bad.
with so many tales games in need of a re-release like abyss, eternia, destiny1 and 2 or even phantasia(which never got a real western release outside of that atrocious gba port), why xillia? hell, why not all of them? it shouldnt be that hard to port a psx or ps2 game with updated translation. i would even accept a legendia(if they give us a romance choice instead of forcing the borderline incestuous one the game has).
Wuthering Waves is also on PC. I didn't even try the mobile version lmao They suck all a** I tried Genshin Impact on mobile and my god, it was so bad, I tried to connect my controller and turns out, only the iOS version supports controller lmao. people there stuck to touch controllers xD

Rudy in Wild Arms was silent and he had a secret, so there are some interesting ways to explore that idea.
I think it should be a rule if they keep using the silent protag, you should get male and female options.

8 did it just fine. 11 had a bit to much of a poker face.
Golden Sun also pulled that off pretty well. So it's definitely doable.

Not to defend the Hoyoverse games (Genshin, Honkai, Zenless, etc…). But they can be downloaded and played on the PC with a gaming remote.

Mega Man 11 was so challenging that it felt a bit choreographed. Arpg like the Legends games is the way to go if open world. As a platformer they can add rpg elements but one of mega man's draws is how simple gameplay is. You never forget how. Also other characters are well received like the Zero and Tron Bonne games. An open world or mmo game could all be refreshing. That ps2 MMX turn based rpg is like, probably not something I wanna play, though. Battle network probably had more action than that. I still think they could probably cross mega man over into almost any style lol. A zelda-like open world game, etc.
That is a complicated matter, because Capcom wasn't giving much attention to MM at that time, and by the look of the own console (3d) games the staff was very unprepared.
Like, it's hard to believe that MMX8 is from the same time of Resident Evil 4 (some months apart), but that's the result of extremely contrasting treatments inside a company that disrespects their classic franchises (btw that was the time Street Fighter was buried).
In short MM projects were poorly funded and got only unqualified staff. So results like MM X Command Mission must not be used to straight up negate the chances of success of a new MM turn based rpg.
If Capcom actually takes MM more seriously this time I believe there are fairly good chances for a MM turn based rpg. It could use the edgy setting of the MMZ series, the bright and cute style of the classic MM series, or the MMX series that is the middle ground between both extremes. MM actually is a franchise of huge potential and promising ideas, including in varied genres. It only needs good care, that Capcom refuses to do.

I have probably the only ps2 street fighter game, and the guy at the store didn't believe it existed. I didn't know if it existed either, but I was like trying to make it happen anyways. lol

RE: Silent protagonist. I do get Horii's increasing concern on this matter. I think a series where this has often been an issue are the recent Pokemon games, especially Sun and Moon on the 3DS. The move to more cinematic cutscene direction with practically "frozen" expressions on the player character just looks off when done poorly. Here's a quick spitball idea: Player-controlled real-time facial animation during cutscenes. Like holding down x/b makes aserious faces, o/a makes a tired face, ^/x makes a laughing face, and []/y makes sad face. Obviously this can be abused to hell and back by the player for their own amusement and especially streamers, but I think it is a good way to let the player decide how they through the protagonist want to react to the events as they unfold.
RE: Fate franchise. As someone else mentioned, Fate is a mutli-media franchise but it is not anime-first. Type-Moon are a long-running indie developer, and Fate was their big breakout hit 20 years ago as a visual novel. The original version was an R18 game, but that was more of a marketing ploy; at that time, the market for indie visual novels skewed towards erotic content, so they slapped on some sex scenes to market their epic death-game story. All three routes adds up to around 60 hours and there's only a few scenes per route, so we are talking less than an hour of such content spread out very thinly. The porn Trojan worked, and the series took off. After that, they were able to spread out to other game genres, novels, manga, and anime, and the currently ongoing Fate/Grand Order is a turn-based mobile gacha RPG/visual novel hybrid that has been going for several years and makes tractor trailers of money. However, despite how big Fate is international, the original visual novel that started it all (Fate/stay night) never left Japan, not even the non-porno version made for PS2 and later remade for PSVita. It's finally going to see an international release later this year on PC and Switch.

Oh, WuWa PS5 is playable! Hopefully, we will see it releaese soon. I'm playing it on my phone/tablet, but I can't do the timings necessary for counters and perfect dodges reliably.
A silent protagonist is easier for me to stomach if I can play a girl. Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 is a great example. You can play a boy or girl and they are very expressive when it's necessary.
Ancient Roman was popularized by a youtuber known as KarasumaA in Japan; this game used to be fairly obscure even there before that. When you think that it came out a year after FF 7... yeah, it could've certainly been better, hahah. They really screwed up almost everything that could be screwed up in a JRPG.
We still can't play Chrono Trigger on current systems but they decided to give us a fighting game instead.....yeah that makes sense.....never mind, it was cancelled.
I have been pining for a dino crisis remake, or a NEW darkstalkers game. And they locked AVP beatem up in the basement and wont even acknowledge its existence, its not been put out on any console you cant really own it

I've seen the gameplay for Ancient Roman and i can obviously tell that it's a FF7 knock and not even a good one at that. And i though RPG's like StarGazer and Shadow Madness were messy games with a lot of jank, But on the bright side Acient Roman looks to be the funny kind of bad and not "Bad" bad.

with so many tales games in need of a re-release like abyss, eternia, destiny1 and 2 or even phantasia(which never got a real western release outside of that atrocious gba port), why xillia? hell, why not all of them? it shouldnt be that hard to port a psx or ps2 game with updated translation. i would even accept a legendia(if they give us a romance choice instead of forcing the borderline incestuous one the game has).
