  • Are these the best pencils for your dark tones when drawing - Staedtler vs Faber Castell Pencil Comparison
In today’s video I’m doing a comparison between two different types of pencil. The Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black pencils and the Faber Castell Pitt Graphite Matt pencils. The Staedtler’s are part carbon and part graphite and I’m not sure what the Faber Castell’s are made up of other than graphite. But both pencils are designed to help you get much darker and non reflective tones.
So I’m pitting them against each other in another half and half drawing. This time I’ll be drawing Chris Evans.
This drawing took me 40 hours and was done on Strathmore 300 series Bristol Smooth surface paper.
What do you think of the results?

The A.I voice is so annoying that it ruins what is a fantastic drawing and review of these two pencil sets, but I just couldn’t finish it as the noise was driving me crazy 😜

The Staedtlers are a tad harder than Faber Castells which is suitable for making sharp details. Also, in our country, the Mars Black lineup is half the price of the Pitt Graphite Matt.

Yeah they’re quite a bit cheaper than the Faber Castells over here too. You get more pencils in the Faber Castell pack, and you also get a blending stump, an eraser and a sharpener. But it depends on how useful those extras are for each individual artist. The extra pencils will make it easier to get certain tones but I feel like you can get all the same tones with the Staedtlers by just practicing with different amounts of pressure.

Faber Castell Aquarelle, are my favorite. They get darker than FC 9000,they are more versatile and the wooden bodies are thicker.

I tried both of them, and the FB matt pencils do shine while SM Lumograph don't.

While brands use the same rating system for their graphite pencils, there isn't a universal standard for how the pencils are marked up. That can make things a bit difficult if needing a particular pencil if the usual brand can't be obtained. A 6B might be another brands 4B or 8B. I estimate that if Derwent were to make a 12B it would be equvalent to the Faber Castell 14B. Availability of the open stock was an issue for me, So I moved over to Faber Castell. I haven't tried the Staedtler and I can't say what the open stock situation is with them generally. While they do seem like a good pencil, what wins it for me is the Faber Castell being less scratchy, according to various reviews. For very dark tones I did use the Polychromos black but that doesn't seem to be a need with the Matt series. I'm not really sure if the shine is really an issue as I have always gone over the drawing with a matt spray fixative. Incidentally that is a very good drawing there and a pretty good review.

Thank you very much! Yeah, I’ve really enjoyed using Faber Castell pencils in general, regardless of if I’m using graphite, Graphite Matt, or polychromos colour pencils. They make great pencils!

Let me guess... In Comparison Faber castell kinda smooth like graphite right.
Also is there difference between the green and black faber castell pencils?

    • @HArtDrawing
      @HArtDrawing  Год назад +2

Yeah, the Staedtlers felt a little rougher on the paper, while the Faber Castells felt smoother if I remember correctly.
I’ve never tried the green Faber Castells but I think they’re designed to just be standard graphite. So they might be shinier than the Faber Castells I used in this video. I’m not sure what exactly Faber Castell did to make these pencils different but I think they’re designed to be more matte finish and achieve darker tones than standard graphite

To be honest, they’re both amazing and I couldn’t tell much of a difference at the end. I’d say maybe the Faber Castells just about won, but they’re both so equal that I’d probably suggest whichever is more affordable wherever you are

@@HArtDrawing I can't understand, why you can't see the difference, because the only thing similar, is the fact that the same person's face, was drawn by the same person. As to how the look, it's night and day and you can immediately tell, that the right side is different than the left. I prefer Faber Castell, they look way better quality and performance as also how the drawings look in the final result. Staedtler's graphite, is overrated and overpriced in the same time, and that's not my personal opinion, but facts. Jepanese like Pentel and Mitsubishi, along with Faber Castell, make the best quality graphite and the best "black" pencils. Staedtler is between student's grade and Professional, the rest I mentioned, are only Professional.

Let's NOT see how they compare.
Let's understand their brand philosophy instead.
Let's find a suitable philosophy that matches our philosophy.
Let's actually get a personal philosophy.
