Activision Blizzard did things, legit things (which led to a suicide), and got virtually zero criticism after two months or so. A Chinese game dev says something crude and it's being treated as the absolute worst thing in human history that can never be forgotten. The way some parts of western twitter (and various forums) have spun this is steeped in Sinophobia. So just know that and try not to take too much of it seriously. Also, 99% of people do not care about this stuff. They just want good games and I'm happy that Chinese developers are really hitting a stride. I look forward to more great Chinese made games!

We already saw how a simple Olympic games already have alot of Sinophobic tripe towards Pan Zhanle who won fair and square (not to mention, Chinese athletes had to do "testing" 10 times more than other nations, that is downright discrimination), but there were already racism and jealously towards all Chinese athletes as they can't believe "An Asian who swim faster than a white guy". So basically the people were saying that historically, games like the ones from Blizzard were acting like club promoters at the time. You know... like advertising all the women going to their events, offering women free entry and free drinks just to populate their clubs and attract men to pay entrance fees. The Wukong developers were saying we don't need to do that, our game is good and can stand by itself we don't need to use women to attract players. They complain about lack of diversity in Western games, and yet when a game that highlights a non-Western culture comes out, they then complain it isn't diverse and want to Westernise it.
The hit job is all because the developers didn't bow down and pay millions for a consultation they didn't want or need and that we all know would ultimately ruin the game.

This is clearly a translation problem. This is the equivalent of putting Chinese charachters into Google Translate and you get a literal transatation on an expression/idiom that isn't meant to be interpreted on face value. A local translator would know this but a foreigner would not.
Having said that, I'm super excited for this and brings back a lot of nostalgia as the IP is one of my favourite as a Chinese kid growing up in a Western country. I can't believe it has taken so long for a game to be made in this setting!

thanks for the video 😊 i'm also a young woman, i not only play games but i've worked in the games industry. i'm from scotland, but i lived in china for a year, (a few years ago), after i graduated from my degree and loved it. back then, i remember thinking "i wish there was a bigger games industry in china", so that i could work there in my industry haha (i don't work in the industry anymore as it doesn't pay well enough for the workload). so, even though i'm not chinese, i still feel very proud of this game from china that has had massive success on release. i know how western media is usually hysterical about anything about china, so of course i'm not brainwashed like a lot of other people in the UK.
the only thing is, i really dislike the debate/drama around it. i can actually understand why some women, even with context, would feel a bit sad about some of the game devs' views. i know i did, and i heard about it i think a year or just under two years ago. but that's all, it's not a big deal and i still am very happy to play the game and hope for it's success. they're a new, small game company that is mostly full of guys - it's obviously going to have like inappropriate views at work lol. i do think those recruitment ads were a bit creepy, and shouldn't have been done. but i'm sure that will improve with their success, and it really is not that big of a deal that it deserves this kind of drama from western media lol.
i also understand that the review of the game is a bit unfair. however, i think honestly after reading the IGN review that came up after i googled it, it still is a good rating. i honestly don't think many people care about what gaming news companies say about a game before they play it anymore. 8/10 is what IGN gave it. there are bugs in the game, and this will also impact the score. the off-hand comment about diversity, i think has been overblown by a certain far-right aspect of the gaming crowd in the west, to create drama around it.
so it gets so overblown, with people claiming ridiculous stuff like that the game is seen as bad because there's not lots of ethnicities of monkeys or whatever. but i've not seen anyone genuinely say that, only people claiming that's what's happening. so i think some of the drama from the other side is really overblown, and these people trying to blame it on "wokeness" is really silly. minorities who haven't criticised the game are getting caught in the crossfire because some other extremist gamers are getting too offended about a review that most people won't read anyway. i feel like if it wasn't overblown by that side, a lot of the devs' comments would have been swept under the rug, and most people would forget. now it's turning into some culture war lol. i mean, i think the devs did say some sexist comments. but it's not the end of the world that they said stuff like that, and it's not the end of the world that people criticised it. people are going to have their say on both sides, and there are valid points on both sides.
anyway, i've rambled a bit lol. i'm just going to hope the drama from both sides goes away quickly and just enjoy the game 😁 this was a good video! i also think even if the game was "perfect" to western media lol, they would find a way to criticise it unfairly just because it's from china, and they don't like feeling threatened 😂 so that's why i wouldn't care what games journalism thinks, the reviews on steam are very good (except people complain about bugs/disk space etc)

There are idioms like this in any language. In my mother tongue, also Asian in origin, when two people (independently of gender) engage in praising each other a bit too strongly, we say that they engage in "mutual d**k s****ing." Today, when someone says "I'm not interested in mutual d**k s****ing," it does not mean they are homophobic, it means they are not interested in having a conversation in an echo chamber, where their ideas would not be criticized. And obviously, it's a bit rude, you would not use this expression in a polite conversation.

That seems to be the general consensus about Chinese games in general. As a Chinese person myself, I long felt Chinese games even before mobile games were just not worth looking at. That is why Black Myth Wukong surprised me, and I am hoping that it will succeed. South Korea has shown they could step up and make something for consoles. So why not China?
And as for the sexism accusations, yeah, choice of words in a professional setting would be nice, but we get the meaning. And then there's this 'lack of diversity' over a game about one of the most famous Chinese stories ever written featuring animals and demons. Why take anyone seriously?

And about how certain foods are hot or cold.

As for IGN, it is important that Chinese gamers begin to understand that IGN are just one part of a larger conspiracy to disrupt the harmony of gamers by accusing anything that respects the traditional male perspective of being sexist. But in fact it is all a scam, where journalists and consultancy companies like Sweet Baby work together to create accusations of sexism, so that developers will feel pressured to hire consultants, who then remove anything traditional, heterosexual or caucasian from the games. This causes the industry to lose money and developer jobs to be lost, but the scammers do not care, because they get to continue their mafia style tactics.

I think it is unfortunate that so much negative attention has been placed on Black Myth Wukong given how important the game is to many especially from China.
But as a Chinese person, I feel a lot of the other people who are "defending" Black Myth Wukong and Game Science are also completely missing some of the valid concerns (especially regarding the strange specific requests on their email to influencers covering the game). I don't think Game Science or the publisher has handled the situation well, leading to many of the misconceptions so I really hope they'll be able to address them properly. Thank you so much for this. IGN and Sweet Baby are like small childs who cry if a game doesn't fit their ideology and create problems because they have none, instead of just choosing another game like normal people do. Games are meant to be fun.

Very insightful. The only Chinese game i have had any experience with came from Sony's China Hero Project. It was called F.I.S.T. and it was genuinely one of the best 2D metroidvanias i've ever played

I really like China and her culture. I starting learning mandarin and that so different from what we have here in the west. China finally start to export herself more, she should be proud of what she make. And I'm so tired to see people trying to Americanize everything. Diversity is also having many different game, from different time, different type. The simple presence of Black Myth is a diversity in game industry because they are verry little type of game like him and about China mythology. I can't understand thoose people... Not all game can have World diversity, if all are like this, that not "diversity" anymore.

Growing up, I was told to be cautious of what to post on the internet, so bosses and HR wouldn't use it to bar me from being hired.
Nowadays, it's regular nobodies that dig that stuff up to shame you.
