Incredible! Such a nerve-wracking job to repair a century-old post, sawing and fix the wood with such precision and skill, setting the stone foundation, everything to support the building for decades to come! max respect!
Thank you 😊
Thank you for sharing the work you do! It’s so nice to see younger generations carry forward traditional skills. Additionally, I appreciate the sensible refurbishment of existing structure using natural components.
So many today choose to “improve” their constructions by demolishing the existing material, discard it at a landfill, then replace the product with various synthetic plastics, metal alloys, or composites.
I would imagine the structures you are repairing have stood strong more than 75 years, and through your restoration, will remain usable for many decades more.
Well done. 🤙 ❤
Thank you for the kind comment 😊
I cannot even saw or chisel that well on a fixated piece on my workbench - and you do that ON A HANGING POST.
This was mezmerising and a joy to watch. Arigato, Dylan-san!
Thanks! 😊🙌
Im very happy i stumbled upon your channel. Im a carpenter, but i dont do this type of work. Very interesting to see
This is nothing short of amazing! It is difficult to imagine the birth of these methods and the fact that only hand tools are used..
Thanks 😊🙌
It's just perfect. Very very good
I really wish that I was able to apprentice as a carpenter in Japan. I think that, once I got passed being overwhelmed by the goals, I would have a lot of fun doing this.
“Mesmerizing” is the description for me. I can’t take my eyes off the wood when it’s being chiseled or planed. And all those measurements that you must take again and again. These are just beautiful and so worth knowing about. It’s wonderful that so much still-good wood is still useful and can be used for the future. Thank you for these videos and the work that you do. I look forward to more on this restoration.
Thank you for the kind comment 😊
I would love a real time version of this!
Play it back at a lower speed.
The sounds of birds and wood this day is not getting any better what a joy to watch such skills domo arigatou gozaimasu Dylan Iwakuni San ⛩️🎏🙏🏽
I've got a few posts like this to repair, and some sill plates to replace.
Excellent work! Enjoy the video with no music in the background just natural sounds. I would like some reference to how long it took to do this work and did you have to sharpen your chisels multiple times while doing the work? Enjoy your Channel huge fan of Japanese carpentry and woodworking! Columbus Michigan
Thanks!

What wood do you use for the little wedges? Is there something specific that was traditionally used.
The wedges are made from Japanese oak. Durable and hard.
@@dylaniwakuni Thank you for the reply. I hadn't seen much information specifying it, I use the Oak I have available for wedges and pegs.
Hey Dylan! What kind of wood would you recommend joinery practicing on? Something softer like cedar or spruce or more something like birch? Thanks!
@@ShawnWitty Haha sounds good to! I was kinda thinking of getting a lot of different opinions to see what many prefer. I am a beginner in the joinery scene so I am not really sold on any type to practice on yet
Good job! It's good to see this kind of practice still being used rather than the western 'build-new' metality. 😊👍
Cheers😊🙌
