- Very nice upgrade here. This is a satellite feed recording, meaning that during what would be commercial breaks, the feed instead stays at the stadium and 'candid' conversation can be heard here and there by the announcers. This game was VERY low in contrast and drab in color, but I used Resolve to majorly bring the brightness of the picture down and to make the color 'pop again. Topaz Video AI was used to denoise and revert compression, and to sharpen and upscale. You can see before/after screenshots here -- imgbox.com/g/iPMoGipiVc -- My thanks to romelovesdan for providing the DVD files used for this project
RIP....Roman Gabriel. My favorite player in my youth. In addition, I think this is the first time this full game has been available on YT. Thanks.
@@mikey7189 It was on April 20, 2024 that Roman Gabriel passed away.
Even though my Packers lost this game, I still loved it. Those classic Bills Uniforms. Great announcers, and quality broadcasts. The 70's and 80's were absolutely incredible for football. The NFL Today was the ideal Pre-game and Post-game show. It easily blows away every show they do nowadays. Thanks again for sharing another great game!
I was obsessed with the Bills of the Chuck Knox era.
I loved those uniforms.
Joe Ferguson was my hero.
Same here. Even after O.J. left the Bills were my favorite team.
Those uniforms were great! Buffalo should bring them back
@@eshoemaker I agree!
Love the satellite feed games, just like being in the production truck.
RIP Roman Gabriel.
There is a documentary that shows nothing but Network satellite feeds of news broadcasts from a presidential race I believe its called Feed
A great glimpse into the inner workings of a broadcast. Also, many give a sense of being "in the stadium" with the cheerleaders, PA announcements, wide angle shots of the stadium, etc
To me,this was the perfect era of football on TV. No over-the-top graphics, dialed-down stadiums (heck even Buffalo's helmet logo is almost faded off the field at the 50), no between-play theatrics and taunting by the players...it was all business. The NFL was better in every way in 1979.
Yes I totally agree with you and also they didn't show the score on the tv screen back then you actually had to know what's going on and follow the game. I loved those old Bills uniforms too. Great memories back then.
I miss football from this era.
The late Roman Gabriel sporting a cowboy hat, nice! Thanks for another awesome classic game Dave, I never tire of these!
This might be the clearest restoration you've ever done
I appreciate that Michael, but there have definitely been better ones :)
Bills went 7 and 9 in 79, Chuck Knox s 2nd year. They became a contender starting in 1980.
Another more rare matchup and 'regional' broadcast for all to enjoy enhanced by Volsky's magic touch. As many have noted, it is now more relevant to view after the news of Roman Gabriel's passing. Many fans here, living in other cities back then, perhaps never viewed a game with Gabriel in the announcing booth.

Amazing!
I'm 60 and Roman Gabriel made me a lifelong Rams fan. Love these broadcasts. Chances are I saw this game back in the day.
PBP: Tim Ryan
Color: Roman Gabriel
Well done.Great entertainment listening to everybody during tv timeouts
I was always impressed with Tim Ryan who also did hockey very well. And Roman was a pleasant surprise.RIP SIR.
These enhanced games from the 70's are so crazy to watch because they don't look much different from the 90's, it's so long ago!
Love those Bills teams. Thank you for posting.
who knew , 10 years later embarking on a H.O.F. career Green Bay WR James Lofton would be a Buffalo Bill from 1989-1992
Not a huge football fan usually only watch the playoff games because it’s elimination and exciting. But I would like to see Buffalo win the SB most.
Bills Linebacker Jim Haslett would later be the Head Coach for the New Orleans Saints.
I used to love watching him play, He was.
The most valuable player in the league back in 1969.
Came here from watching Tim Ryan on NBC doing NHL hockey with Ted Lindsay. Class act.
Absolutely fun to watch. Ferguson was a solid qb. Forgot he called his own plays.
Fun fact, Ferguson called for the red helmets because all 5 teams in the AFC East had white helmets back then.
The uniforms look so good and clear. Helmets before all the airholes and weird shapes.
good stuff as always.
Another great job restoring an old time football game Dave 👍 Sometimes hard to believe 1979 was 45 years ago 🤯 I was 15 years old. BTW, I thought Roman Gabriel was Glenn Campbell! 😀 The big cowboy hat really announced his presence on the screen
Wow Roman was announcing after retiring. He has a good podcast if anyone wants to look for it.
Roman Gabriel held the world record in Guiness for most fumbles in a year.
I love that it's a backhaul feed. Thanks for putting work into this.
Tom Birney was the last 'straight-on' kicker to break into the league.
Dave's videos are like MJ's Thriller Album. In other words, his videos (just like MJ tracks from Thriller) are either legendary (like Rolling Stone top 500 of all time like Billie Jean, Beat it, Thriller) or just a really damn good video like Human Nature. As far as this game is concerned, 3 points to make:
1). 58:18. On the Loften TD, that just might be the worst effort I've ever seen from a safety in terms of using the back of the end zone as a defender.
1:39:50. Roman making the moves on Starr's wife. Saying he's going to get some Cherry Pie in Green Bay. You'll need to watch the interview with her a few minutes earlier for some context.
29:50. The big Mike Wallace interview with the Ayatollah. Prior to the world waking up to the fact that the worlds a stage.
Dave, as always, thank you! Bob Avellini best of?😢🐻🏈( plus as a 🐻fan ,watching the Packers lose..❤ plus the disco break music lol👌🏻)
Another great video Dave, thank you very much! RIP Roman G
He was also on the Carolina Panthers radio broadcast team
How was the new Bills helmet graphic received by Bills fans back then?
I loved it... but the transition to the red helmets was a welcome change
Bart Star, great quarterback, leader, and public figure. Coaching was rough.
55:24 There were also two Filipino citizens held in Iran hostage crisis.
Well done! Keep up the good work! Love these enhanced broadcasts.
Whoa is this super clear and bright its actullay blindingly bright 😊 breathtakingly bright
Cool upload! Thanks for this great game!
Watched this game at my grand parents, no idea why that made it memorable
I attended this game. Whitehurst throws a long TD pass on a 4th down play before the 1st half ended to Lofton. LB John Anderson intercepted a Ferguson pass that was negated by a penalty. That really hurt the Pack.
Jim Wingo
I stand corrected...but Wingo's first name is Rich. This was a sloppy game on both sides. And a lot of empty seats at Rich Stadium.
I don't know how any of these guys could play with exposed elbows or forearms. Rug burn city. Roger Staubach always had bloody elbows playing at Texas Stadium. And then you have to deal with getting tackled on concrete. Ouch. I'm uncomfortable just watching this carnage.
Nowadays technology is making the games look boring on TV, watching this games that I used to watch as a kid are far more better than today
I think the networks today are trying to make the broadcast look like a video game; I also think they've forgotten that the game itself is the show, not the way they present it.
Are the Bills endzone logos faded that bad? Turf at Rich Stadium (1973) is 6 years old here? Love the empty seats! My Uncle was a ticket broker back in the day. He got stuck with a stack of tix for this game! Couldn't give em away!
Buffalo Bills need to go back to the Dark Blue Facemarks like these helmets
Hell yeah this is awesome I'm a die hard Bills fans can you post more bills games dave?
I'm sure I have more to work on at some point. I have posted 4 other ones in the past year:

@davevolskysbackdoor5673 fantastic thanks. Do you only do stuff from the 70s and 80s do you have anything from the late eighties or the 90s?
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 I've actually got that 1988 playoff game on DVD as well as all of the playoff games from the late 80s into the 90s I've got some regular season games on DVD from 1988 when Thurman Thomas was a rookie but I would love to see some other regular season games from anytime from 89 to 95
I mainly do games up through 1984, but I will go as late as 1989 for non-Niner games.
I like how matter of fact Tim Ryan is, and Roman Gabriel gives scant opinions, just some comments on plays. Compare this to today where everyone's an expert, and so many commentators often make the broadcast about themselves.
Any chance you have the mariners first game? Can only find radio
So this was the raw feed from CBS? Sounds and looks like it
Satellite feed
Looking for Bills v. Packers December 1982, game was blacked out in Milwaukee.

That was field in that day was a some thin green carpet on concrete. Watch the spike at 2:41:40 ish
29 turnovers in 11 games? That’s ridiculous!
Can you make any video HD quality or does the source material have to be from a network feed? I have a couple football games from a cable access channel in the ‘80s and was wondering if it’s possible to improve the quality.
It's all dependent on the quality of the source. Better in = better out. The source recording for this particular game was in very good shape for instance, which is why it turned out so well. Pretty much all SD recordings will have some sort of noise and compression, and I use Topaz to remove most of that and to sharpen up jagged edges and whatnot. It also performs the upscaling from 480p to 1080p. The second part of the process is taking the Topaz result into Da Vinci Resolve and working on contrast and color correction. More often it is the Resolve portion of the process that really stands out. In terms of source quality, again if your source recordings are in good shape, the better the result will be. If your source is very blocky or laden with compression, you have no chance. Also if your source has very low detail, the end results probably won't be great either. There has to at least be something 'there' in the original for the software to sink its teeth into in order to work its magic
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673Thanks for the info? I assume all those programs are free downloads?
Resolve has a free version, but Topaz will run you about $300
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Thanks for the info! Enjoy your RUclips feed for all sports.
Topaz does have a free trial you can download to try out (at least they used to), but there will be a big ol' watermark on any renderings :)

Dang. Knowing that Green Bay has never in history won in Buffalo was a total spoiler.
👍👍👍
Ground Chuck! Took the Seahawks to the playoffs.
0:36 nice hat on Roman Gabriel 👌
Not sure I remember Gab in the booth😊
You can just see what shit those helmets are made of.
Ok 1/2 time Gabriel asks Cherry Starr "off air" to spell her name, she says C-H-E-R-R-Y you know like the pie, On air he says repeatedly how beautiful she is. The off air he says" I am going to get me some pie in Green Bay, you're right Cherry Pie, I bet she can make a good Cherry pie too!" Wow talking that way, what a perve and she is married!
LMAO
Was Taylor Swift at this game? :D
Packers were bad back then
Bart Starr, and the worst offense in the NFL really wasted James Lofton's talents.
Do you mean in 1979 or in general? Because the Packers were not the absolute worst in '79 (25th of 28 in scoring), and in '82 and '83 they were they were the fifth-highest scoring team in the NFL. Apart from 1991, Lofton put up an AV (Approximate Value) score of 10 or more from '81 to '85 and had his best seasons with the Pack.
Spoiler Alert:

And to this day (May 2024), Green Bay has NEVER won in Buffalo.
Green Bay has never won in Buffalo.
Look how empty that place is.bills fans are the worst!
FYI - Rich Products Corporation Stadium was one of the first naming rights venues, not like today.
Rich Products Corporation is still headquartered in Buffalo, New York.
I think that if Starr ever had a defense as coach That the Packers could have contented for a superbowl They had the offense to compete with any team in the leauge
Green Bay need this era of jerseys back
