I have been looking for this video to watch again for about 5 years. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have made my day as I love going to sleep listening to Ric Mixter.
I really enjoy these documentaries….great job Mr. Mister….I’m just flabbergasted how anyone can write anything in those overwhelming storm conditions…between the waves and wind.
Rick, I am thankful for your work, really your passion which makes it a labor of love. I actually have been playing you tube Great Lakes Shipwrecks with you and Brendon B. for the last couple years. Maybe it's because I have spent most of my life caring for the over 70 crowd but just love the treasure of capturing these survivors on camera. You can see it on their face, the remembrance of the fear. I don't know about everyone else but when I watch the boats come into Duluth and hear their salute the meaning to me is that they made it!
You are too kind Lisa. It's been a fun quest and we alway hope to find others who can help record/collect/share stories as well. There are so many untold tales yet to explore!
the 1940 Gale also dropped temperatures from the 60s to below zero in hours with rain turning to sleet and a snowy blizzard caught so many duck hunters in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin off guard.
Yes! The Armistice Day Storm (named for the day of surrender & marking the end of 'War of all Wars'- WWI, of course this was before WW2!) & 49 duck hunters perished!
@@NicklePickle426 yep. Those Dunk Hunters who perished in November 1940 were only wearing light jackets and t-shirts because the temperatures were originally in the 60s prior to the storm.
Really a truly fantastic documentary. You can tell this was a labor of Love. Everything came together here, between the narration, the editing, the interview, and last (but not least in the least) the music. Some of Dan's songs were so hauntingly beautiful. Thank you everyone involved in bringing this to fruition.
Very, very informative. It msde me realize what a temper mother nature can have. R.I.P. all you brave souls. You did a job that a lot of men couldn't. God bless you.

@@lighthouselover06 that is awesome your uncle is one awesome guy and the story he tells in just incredible and kinda scary I'm just glad he made it through that storm safely
There is a channel called big old boats whose narative is head and shoulders above this one. There. Is much more to a maritime disaster story than just information. Once you watch one of the videos from big old boats, you will better understand.
Salute to ed who made it in a tough occupation salute to those brave men who went out in those heavy storms my god he said the waves were like mountains wow
Thank you. So excellent 🎉. I love to learn about the Great Lakes. The Andrea Gail MOVIE changed my perspective on the men who go out knowing they may never see land again. Quality is spectacular on this video.
Ric Mixter will be after you for uploading this... But, I really appreciate you making this publicly available to those of us who can't access it in its VHS or DVD form. 👍 *Edit* I realised, after reading some of the comments, replies and other videos, this is Ric's channel. The amount of dedication by you and Dan Hall to make this fantastic documentary; I just want to say I really appreciate your work. By the way, where can I buy a (digital) copy of the song Dan sang for the ending?
@@stevensonline8695 they told you it's on RUclips and you asked where? You literally commented on the same video to which you're asking where on RUclips it is??????
I am so concerned that they all try the last run. Knowing how great the risk is they still go. Especially nowadays as the weather reports are usually good. Is the last chance risk worth it. The loss of lives and the ship itself a loss to the families. The owners loss must be huge as well but they are insured. Nothing can replace the loss of a husband, father, brother and grandfather. It really is a run to stay alive. Is it worth it.
Now, in retrospect and being as informed as you are, what are the top 5 worst storms on Lake Superior since record keeping began? What, if anything did they have in common? Barometer readings? Wind speeds?
"Worst" is so subjective- worst damage, worst wind, worst loss of life. I know barometer readings indicate storms, but I've chased low readings several times to the beach and found the waves were never over 10 feet tall. It's a terrifying mix of moisture, barometric low and bad timing that build monsters on the lakes, and it would be awesome if someone is inspired by "Final Run" to do further examination :)
@@CKritNinja - Your absolutely right of course as there are so many variables that pushed the storms into the record books and I'd like think that while the actual weather phenomenon has been repeated several dozen times since then, the fact that our weather forecasting has become so much better that the conditions that caused these multi sinking are now all but gone. I live here in the Keweenaw and have been a yooper all my life, and can't remember a storm recently and out of nowhere that has taken a life. Thankfully.
Many of the songs from the original 1913 documentary started out as just quick jingles between shipwreck stories- but Dan and David Norris expanded Wheelsman later into a full song. Hopefully some day Plymouth, Price and Regina will find full songs :)
Hey Ric! So many people swear that the Fitz would never have sailed in a storm without all hatch clamps secured but the 47:40 mark of the video completely disproves that theory with video proof (besides the distorted clamps)unless that's some other ship but it sure looks like the Fitz to me. However I don't feel like thats the smoking gun. I think they did it all the time because they never saw water in the cargo holds but some people just can't believe it but theres the proof. You're the only person that I know of that has pointed out the imploded hatch covers on holds 1 and 2 which I believe is the real smoking gun if there even could be one considering we dont know why she riding low with a list but what we do know is that is that all the hatch clamps weren't fastened and the death-blow was the implosion of the hatch covers. Its indisputable.
Who else is here on the 110th anniversary of the 1913 Storm? Also, James Carruthers is my personal Holy Grail shipwreck, not just in the Great Lakes, but in the world.
It's always the "last run of the season." Call it corporate greed, incredibly bad luck - or both. RIP to all of the mariners who have lost their lives on those inland seas.
Ric Mixter doing outstanding work telling these somber yet important stories of human tragedy and overcoming unimaginable conditions. Thank you Ric!!

My great uncle was Porter on a ship list in a gale in 1920 on Lake Huron. She was a whaleback and just found last year. No mention of her or her crew.
