Such a good series. In a world gone mad, these stories of current and impending human scientific progress, both in space and on Earth, are a breath of fresh air.

Isn't this just a SYMPTOM of a world gone mad? I mean, clearly, the our species doesn't care about itself, so this is clearly a waste of our time. I suggest the reason you find this a breath of fresh air is the same reason we enjoy video games and drugs and anti-depressants and fast cars and vacations... to escape the madness. If the world was not mad, we'd help our homeless, end the wars, feed all the countries and there would be no thoughts of escaping to video games or another planet.
But then again, I'm with ya. Fuck the world.

@@Tormentality dont @ me on this, but the general reason on why it's happening is simple and pretty clear: egoism, human brain is developed to protect his "shell", so we should live our lives to the best just in order to keep ourselves safe & happy, but not to help someone foreign one that's not connected to the brain. I'm not trying to be edgy and stuff but that thing is gonna kill us rapidly. though, humans are just a blink moment of hummingbird's wings movement. and that's kinda fine if we see this not from our perspective

The next step should be to make the largest pressurised... well... space in space possible. With a way to dock with it. Then to add to it life support for water, air conditioning, electric, etc utilities. Just a hard, air-tight shell with lots of room in it and basic utilities. Real-estate in orbit.
Right now the focus is on prefabricated, more or less self-contained modules with loads of little gizmos, but that's exactly what makes it expensive. You can't just go and build a factory and housing.
To this end. The two things that makes EVA more dangerous than it needs to be are the chance that you can drift off into space, and that you are not shielded from the sun and other radiation. The simplest way to mitigate this is to just build a large sack of interlocking disks. Not pressurised in the least. Just a space within which astronauts cannot drift off without a way to manually get back, and which shields them from the worst radiation. It could even be interlocking hexagonal solar panels (cheap ones. Just loads of them). with all the wiring to make use of the electricity generated.
It could be made quite large, relatively cheaply, and just be draped over a large rigid frame. And then a real pressurised space station can be built within it.

In the moment I am writing a literature review about In-Situ Resource Utilization. There has been science going on for more then 20 years, but the MOXIE experimenton NASAs Mars 2020 Rover, witch trys to demonstrate produktion of O2 from the martian CO2 atmosphere, is the single In Siture Resource Utilization Projekt that is going to fly in the near future. The thing I am finding out the more I read, is that it needs a real world goal in the near term future to direkt science in a coordinated direction.
We just have to go to moon and mars and try stuff. We dont have to make 30 year timescales but try to build hardware for the moon in 2 years, try it and than repeat.

Chinese have plans to test ISRU on the Moon, and Russian Luna-27 too. Could come before 2025.

I'd love a home just above the orbit of earth, but just for getaways, not for permanent residents. I love greenery, hate deserts and would miss the moss underfoot.

you can't bring supplies up from earth . space citys have to rely on resources from space . then you have to have utilities plumbing , sewer , air , for each building in orbit city . you need to connect each building with a water and sewer hose . then keep it from frezzing

The funny thing is if Starship were to launch all the gear for the ISS it would get it done for fraction of the launch cost. Progress.

I don't think it expires or anything. Just a matter of keeping up the maintenance from damage caused by space debris.
Technically, most things in space can last thousands or even millions and billions of years so long as they don't hit anything.

@@kevingreen3781 Originally, the ISS would have been deorbited in 2020, that right, next year.
Fortunately, it received an extension, until 2024.
