Hey Tom, great video! What's the best all-around travel fountain pen? All-around meaning more then just air travel. It is the fountain pen that you just have to have on you at all times. Going for walks, driving around town, mowing the grass, shovling snow, tackling chores...
This might be cheating but I have 2 questions…here goes…
1) What pen would you gift someone to hook them into the fountain pen hobby… a gateway pen if you will?
2) Which 3-5 pens would you recommend to cover all of the bases if someone wanted a small collection? (Everyday writer, travel pen, special occasion pen, fun pen & knock-about or pen you keep on the desk to lend out to uninitiated FP colleagues 😅)
I’m a fan of the festive sweater, Tom 🎉
For your first question, I would gift the person a Jinhao 9019 pen. For your second question I would recommend Pelikan M1000, Lamy 2000, Gravitas Entry, Pilot Falcon, and Aurora Optima.
Great suggestions and I love the sweater, Tom.
What tips and suggestions can you give for storing fountain pen inks that helps preserve the ink’s properties and color? I have a lot of ink bottles so a lot of them will likely be on a shelf for a long while and I want to make sure their color won’t deviate too much from when I first opened the bottle.
Thanks for the in-depth answer. Time to stretch my fingers and get to ordering😊
What are some suggestions for how best to use and show off my favorite inks and pens this time of year? Hand made gift ideas maybe? I thought about photocopying a handwritten version of the family newsletter, not sure it would show off the shimmer, but definitely don't think I can handwrite it 35 times.
I absolutely love the Oasis B5 notebooks for work - I have a different colored one for my different "projects" - one for asbestos sampling, one for ergonomics assessments, one for my weekly meetings with my employee, etc.
I’m a fan of the festive sweater! 😆 should wear a different sweater with each change of season.
Over the past few years I have given a half dozen Tool Pen Ballpoints/Pencils as gifts - every one of those peeps had reason to love a pen/pencil with measuring sticks attached - one was for an electrician who told me over the last year He "Used THE HELL out of it ! even chipped one of the screwdriver blades!
What is your favorite way to penable people? How do you like to show friends the variety and breath of fountain pens when in person with one interested in them?
My question for this week is: What are some of your New Year pen resolutions? I am getting ready for 2024 already!
What are some examples of good ways to use fountain pen ink that do not involve writing, especially when you’re stuck inside on a snow day? ☃️
You have a friend who is heading to Japan for vacation & while they are gone they ask you to watch their house & dog, and in doing so offer you payment, but instead of money you ask them to get you a fountain pen or 2. You knock your selection down to a couple of options. Option 1: Pilot Custom 823. Option 2: Pilot Custom 74 and a Pilot Elite 95s. Do you stick with one of those options or do you tweak Option 2 to something else. Inkquiring minds want to know. Well at least mine does. Have a great week!
Hands down, I'd go with the 823 and see if they can get a finish that's exclusive to the Japanese market. Pilot tends to release certain special colors only in Japan (like the Bungubox 823 in Fujiyama Blue) and they never make it to the US unless someone goes to Japan to pick them up.
Hi Tom. I totally agree with your recommendation for gold nib pens. The Custom 74 and E95s are my favorite gold nibs. You can’t go wrong with Pilot. I didn’t like your recommendations for the beginner ones. The Preppy is a great pen. I have many but as a gift it’s a little cheap looking. The Platinum Prefounte would be a better choice. It has the same nib and only a few dollars more than the Wa but the plastic body is much better. The Kakuno is a bit juvenile looking with its happy face nib. I know it costs a little more but the Pilot Explorer is a great pen that doesn’t get enough attention. Thanks for all your videos. My question: When did you first get interested in fountain pens?
Thanks for your feedback! I went deep into the rabbit hole when I started working at Goldspot over 15 years ago.
Love those Opus 88, they look Ice Cold! With winter upon us, are there any tips we should know about if our pens/inks get extra cold?
Hi Tom! I'm new to the podcast, so you might have already answered this question. Of all the pen -related gifts you've received over the years, which are your favorites? Do you have a top five?
What would you recommend as a gift for a pen & ink combination for an artist?
Thanks for the video Tom! I finally decided to purchase a Rhodia note pad for myself.
I really enjoy my Opus 88 1.5 stub but not a fan of the Pilot cm nib at all...question is, do you think certain handwriting styles suit some nibs more than others?
Tom, that was a great video. What are some holiday cards that can be signed with fountain pens? I'd like to send some, and I want to use a fountain pen (preferably one with a stub nib) to sign the cards. Feathering and bleed through would ruin the experience.
Just got into fountain pens and have fell deep into the ink rabbit hole but im trying to find a colors for the winter season, what would be your favorite ink in every color (ROYGBIV) for winter?
❤
Hello Tom. What products could you suggest for improving my handwriting, especially when using a fountain pen? Thanks!
Nice sweater 🦌. My question is what is the heaviest and lightest fountain pen? Or biggest and smallest fountain pen ? 🏋️⚖️
What pen has the most crisp and defined medium line? So many of them can be mushy and I like a sharp line.
Sailor KOP most likely produces lines that are sharp and crisp.
I have been viewing several fountain pen RUclips channels and reading on-line articles, and it seems that the larger the nib, the more enamored everyone is. For example, oohing and aahing over the #8 of the Montblanc 149. What I have not been able to ascertain yet, though, is if there is some quantifiable advantage to a larger nib, or if the perceived desirability is just because there is some cachet to the larger nib. What is it?
I think it's the "bigger is better" mentality ingrained in our minds. Where the nib meets the paper, my Montblanc 146 writes just as nicely as the 149. The only place where I think it makes an impact (besides the wallet), is the Sailor King of Pen. The larger KOP nib is so noticeably smoother and more pliable than the hard 21kt gold nib on the smaller pen.
I also have a love for pizza that runs deep! Any chance for a reissue of the Retro 51 pizza pen in the future?
If there was enough interest, perhaps! Maybe get a "Pizza Petition" started?
Awesome videos.
What are the dominant properties of different ink brands. Which brands are considered wet, dry, shading, sheening, lubricating, etc.
Thank you.
That's a hard question to answer because there are plenty of nuances within ink brands. Take Diamine, for example, they have inks that shade (with low saturation), sheen, and shimmer. In the most recent Diamine Purple Inkvent calendar, we noticed several inks that were dry while others were wet. Others shade while many had shimmer.
@@GoldspotPens that makes sense.
Great pen recommendations! I enjoy watching your videos! Do you have any pen recommendations for shimmering/sheening inks? I am usually disappointed because the sheen and/or shimmer do not show. Thanks!
For the best results with shimmer ink, I recommend nib sizes of broad, double broad, or stub.
My daughter who loves to draw is turning 16. Do you have any recommendations for a fountain pen that is good for drawing? Bonus points if it has a matching pencil available!
Do you think everyone should have at least one nib of every type in their collection, or is it better to stick with a few tried and true sizes or specialty nibs that best fit one's style?
It depends on what one enjoys the most about the fountain pen writing experience. I've seen people approach it both ways. Personally, I enjoy a variety of nibs, but I don't like extra-fine, toothy nibs.
If FWP were to design a Goldspot/Goldilocks-inspired ink for their Ferri-Tales line, what would it be?
"The Perfect Porridge." Not too hot, not too cold. Just right. But, as a color, you might imagine it wouldn't be that appealing to look like porridge.
Hey Tom. My question relates to shopping for fountain pen ink online. I’ve often found that inks look a certain way when they are swatched and in certain light, but when I purchase them, a lot of times I realize that they look very similar to inks I already have. Do you have suggestions on how to better avoid situations like this?
I'd try to look at as many online reviews as you can. "Mountain of Ink" is one of the best resources for this. True, everyone's review and method of photography is going to be different. Ultimately, seeing the ink in person, how it will write in your pen using paper that you use regularly, is going to be the only way to get the most accurate impression. I'd opt to get ink samples so you can see for yourself.
With the holidays coming up, travel is on many people's minds. What accessories do you consider essential for those who travel with fountain pens?
A good pen case to keep all your pens secure, of course. Depends on how long I'll be away. But, I'd consider bringing an extra ink cartridge or bottle of ink in a secure zippered plastic bag. A microfiber cloth as well. Don't forget your trusty notebook(s)!
Hi Tom, my question is what is your go to ink to solve any ink flow problems you are facing with your fountain pen.
I would consult this video and run through the troubleshooting steps - ruclips.net/video/CydUDpr3s2U/видео.html
Recently I've ordered several short-bodied pens. What do you see as the primary advantages of such models, and how can one determine if they'll accept a standard converter or cartridge? It irks me to buy a new pen only to find out that the proprietary converter is available, but the price is higher than that of the pen.
Short body pens are easier to pocket and might fit better in your hand (depends on the writer). You'll have to check with the product description to see if what type of cartridge/converter it accepts. If it isn't available on the website product page, you can google the question "Does X accept an international converter?"
i am going to a pen show this week what are your tips for first time pen show visitors and what next level pen should i get from there?
I have an answer for you in a previous Write Stuff episode - ruclips.net/video/JugApPffKXs/видео.html
If there is no restrictions on money what would be your top 5 luxury pens (talking about pens in the thousands)?
My top 5 luxury pens are AP Splendors of the Orient, Namiki Emperor dragon, Visconti St. Basil, Visconti Looking East, and Pelikan M1000 Raden Red Infinity.
I'd probably get a couple of Namiki's with the hand-painted urushi decoration, a Pelikan M1000 with Maki-e design, a Nakaya, and a Montblanc limited edition.
Namiki and Nakaya have my heart
I want to make my own hand turned wooden fountain pen, what nib and pen fittings (or kit) would you suggest using?
I haven't made my own kit pens before, so I can't speak to that. But, I will say the most popular (and generally most reliable) nib unit to use is the #6 size stainless steel nib made by Jowo.
Sir, which fountain pen is best for exams
Hi Tom! Is there a specific fountain pen/stationery product (pens, ink, paper, etc.) from another country that you wish was easier to get in the US?
I wish Pilot USA would import the Pilot Custom 823 with the FA nib. Presently, it's only available from certain dealers in Japan.
Great video. Noise probably technical glitch.
What is your tip for people who have good collections of pen but are not able to write with all of them?
If your goal is to write with all your fountain pens, I would try to dedicate more time to being able to use them. Perhaps get a bigger pen case to accommodate the pens that usually go unused. Have them nearby at all times so you can write whenever the moment avails.
I want to give one fountain pen to my father on occasion of new year can you suggest me any pen .
At 17:30 did you say Pilot Souveran ? Should it not be Pelikan Souveran?
What is your favorite fountain pen joke?
Made this for you - ruclips.net/user/shortsjZ0xZQQzdM8
Did you call a pelikan a pilot?
He did! 😅 Oops
YUP. Whoopsie.
I thought I was losing my mind or at least my hearing. Lol
What is the best nib size and ink to use an average paper? I don’t want to invest in expensive paper for notes and lists.
If you can't control paper quality, go with a fine nib and use Noodler's X-Feather inks in blue or black.
Perkeo is a crap pen. The nib is boring and it has hard starts. The kakuno would be a way better choice.
Ow my ears, please don't do that again.
Hurt my ears. Please don't do that noise again. Thanks.
